A very spicy, woody note right off the bat, with a hint of citrus that gets swallowed up pretty quickly; then it passes into the spicy-herbal heart note. You can detect the base notes a bit from the beginning, but they begin to separate and come into sharper focus as the drydown commences. This has a ton of sillage at the very beginning, and soon moderates to tolerable, but still prominent levels after a few minutes. The overall impression is typically masculine in the aromatic vein. It is slightly reminiscent of Amouage Lyric, especially in its spicy aspect (cf. Lyric's angelica, ginger, nutmeg, and saffron notes); but it has nothing of the floral aspect of that, and the base note has only sandalwood in common with Lyric. Still, the overall feel of the fragrance is similar. The strength of CN Homme is that it has a very solid base note combining the sandalwood with patchouli and labdanum; that last-mentioned bridges the woody patchouli with with the oriental sandalwood, and lends a subtle ambery tone to the whole, which you have to wait for, but which is worth the wait. I expected this to be good, but it exceeded my expectations. The only thing I have to cavil at is that it probably couldn't easily be worn in warmer weather, but it's wintertime now, so I'm going to go to town... Dominique Ropion justifies his reputation with this one.

Have I told you about the scent of jasmine? Have I spoken about the smell of the sea? The earth is scented. And I perfume myself to enhance what I am. That's why I can not wear a perfume that bothers me. Perfuming is an instinctive wisdom. And like all art, it requires some knowledge of yourself..."

Dior Cologne Blanche
Basically a collection of some of my most favorite notes.. and yet I don't love it. I can't even rate it above a 3/5. Not enough rosemary, too much vanilla and heliotrope, too sweet an almond. I wanted so badly to love this. A letdown.

Wearing one of my favorite holiday scents but the name certainly does not conjure the holidays.
Bois 1920 Sushi Imperiale
Ok I'll admit it the name kept me from trying this for a long time. Go ahead insert your favorite smelly fish fragrance joke here, it will be better than anything I can come up with. Once I finally tried Enzo Gallardi's 2005 release for Bois 1920 I was exasperated to think the silly name kept me, an avowed spice lover, away from the amazing spice fest that Sushi Imperiale is. Sushi Imperiale is as good as it gets if you love spice in your scent and it is easily one of my favorite ones to wear around the holidays because the spices that are most prominent are the classic holiday spices.
The top of Sushi Imperiale begins with bergamot, orange, and lemon. This is a standard citrus beginning but Sig. Gallardi pulls off something rarely seen with these notes he keeps them soft. Usually citrus comes at you with power and tart energy. Here the citrus wafts in and just settles around me like a cashmere scarf. A wonderful alternative presentation of very familiar notes. By keeping the beginning controlled it allows the spices an unexpected oompn as they burst upon the scene. The heart is full of pepper, ginger, anise, nutmeg and cinnamon. This is the smell of the winter kitchen while baking and again it is extremely well-balanced. One moment the anise is prevalent then the nutmeg comes forward then the cinamon and back. This eventually gives way to sandalwood and tonka in the base. The vanilla feel of the tonka extends my winter baking feel but really it turns woody and there is a little vetiver in the base to reinforce that.
Sushi Imperiale has excellent longevity and average sillage, on me.
I've yet to see an adequate explanation for the name and what Sig. Gallardi was thinking when he named this. The only comparison I can make to sushi is this is comparable to chu-toro, which is the finest cut of tuna available at the sushi bar. Sushi Imperiale is one of the finest spice fragrances available at the scent bar.
Have a Titanic Thursday everyone.

Chanel - Cuir de Russie
From 'Now Smell This"-
Chanel’s website describes Cuir de Russie as a “rich, woody oriental” and lists its topnotes as:
Tunisian orange blossom, Calabrian bergamot, and Sicilian mandarin; its heart as jasmine,
Oriental rose, and ylang ylang; and its base as Albanian birchwood. What I smell is a buttery smooth
mélange of aldehydes, iris, ylang ylang, glove leather, and a touch of sandalwood.
