Thread: Nice Aquatic
I have been a total fragrance snob for a long time and vowed never to wear an aquatic but I find in this Mexican heat, I am craving an aquatic. Any recommendations for a great aquatic/seaweed/oceanic/iodine prominent scent?
I did try Bond 9 Coney Island (before all the lawsuit mess) and I liked the opening with guava and lime and that wonderful aquatic accord but not the caramel sweetness in the base notes. Since I vowed not to buy a Bond fragrance because of the aforementioned lawsuit mess, let's just forget Coney Island for now.

bulgari aqua is by far my favorite aquatic scent, but seeing as your a "fragrance snob" i doubt you'll try it :P nothing wrong with common stuff as long as it sells good plus i doubt most people would know the difference between creed and something less expensive.
Another vote for Bulgari Aqua (not Marine. No longevity there.)
Really? You didn't like aquatics and now you crave one? I sort of figured you like 'em or you don't. I hate aquatics as a rule. Can't imagine ever wanting scent for that calone note. Iodine smells nice though. I didn't realize that was an aquatic note. If you find one that suits you, post it. I'll give it a try.
Oh- I do detect a synthetic, slightly Calonous note in last year's Opium PH Eau D'Orient. Maybe that would work for you.
Support your local Leonberger rescue.
The best I've tried is Nautica Voyage, but even that I don't want on me. I used it to freshen up an old wooden storage box, and it really smelled great afterwards. It took out the old musty smell and replaced it with something great. I don't like smelling aquatics on myself, for whatever reason, just seems like there is so much better available. I liked Unbound too, but again, just nothing special at all.

Seaweed (kelp) is very high in iodine. Maybe "seaweed" is what he meant by "iodine?" If so, Bulgari Aqua is heavy on posidonia.
Probably not the best ... but a really nice & unique one from my lot is
Allesandro Dell'Acqua "Man"

I'm interested to hear what others say about this. I've tried a good 30 some aquatic frags and have only found one to my likeing...Issey Miyake. Yes its flooded the market but I must say that it is quite beautiful and well made. Everyone may smell like it but its better than whats out there IMHO.
Creed's Erolfa is also a well made aquatic. Though on me it ends up as a "Dried Up Towel from the Beach+Fishes", nonetheless, not on me it smells great. Its well respected but I think you should give it a try. You can sample it at PERFUMEDCOURT.COM
HEY! Another enthusiastic vote for Bulgari Aqua. Now that I own Aqua Motu, and have a sample of Profumum's Acqua di Sale, I still think Bulgari Aqua (original) is the no contest winner. Trust, Kelly, Trust.
Best one to keep you depressed on rainy day - Horizon.
Nothing else is like it!
I don't wear aquatics, but I find that Hermès Eau des Merveilles is evocative of the ocean/beach, because of its rather salty ambergris.
L'Eau Bleue d'Issey Eau Fraiche which is the fresher version of Bleue(which is just adore); seeems to fit your request IMO.

I'll second erolfa cos it's fantastic but i dont think you can sample it at tpc at the moment.
Aqua Di Roma and Millesime Imperial, both fruity Aquatics.

I'm a fresh scent junkie and proud of it!
Erolfa by Creed
Aqua by Bvlgari
Chrome (original) and Chrome Legend by Azzaro
Aqua Motu by Comptoir Sud Pacific
Acqua di Gio by Armani
Aqua di Mare by il profumo
Pure by Boss
Aqua Motu by Comptoir Sud Pacifique definitely needs to be considered in this category.
PVC and Leather. A Chain and a feather
I think one of the most well done aquatics is still Acqua di Gio. I do believe this fragrance is more hated on BN for its commoness than the actual fragrance.
Bulgari Aqua, smelling like a rocky beach, does smell differently than all other aquatics.
I loathe and detest aquatics, but there are exceptions to every rule and the exception is Coney Island. (What lawsuit?) I love this stuff. I actually bought it because I am a huge rollercoaster fanatic and it seemed appropriate that I get this. I found it OK initially, but somehow it became a real staple. I love the zingly lime margarita opening. It's just fresh and fun. I do indeed wear it to amusement parks, but also on days where I'm tired, because it wakes me up.
My other wakey uppy scent is Virgin Island Water, though it's not an aquatic as such - it is refershing on a hot day, though.
If you want something a bit different then seek out Neil Morris's Aegean. It has ozonic notes but dries down warm and woody. I like this one. http://www.neilmorrisfragrances.com/aegean.html
No one likes Kenzo pour Homme?
Now, I´m wearing Wall Street by Bond No. 9, also one of the best aquatic scents (for me)!!!
Creed Millesime Imperial
Creed Erolfa and Silver Mountain Water.
Aria di Mare by il profumo
"I have the simplest tastes. I am always satisfied with the best." - Oscar Wilde (1854-1900)
IMO the best is Emilio Pucci VIVARA, which, although it is a female scent is very wearable by men
I second L'eau d'Issey and Leau Bleu D'Issey summer version, and Bvlgari.
Also, L'eau Par Kenzo.
For some reason, most others smell like unpleasant chemicals and detergents to me.
My aquatic Top 3 would be:
1. Aqua Motu
2. Kenzo pour Homme
3. Bvlgari Aqva
I wish I could try Erolfa and, especially, Mare by Beth Terry Creative Universe, but that's not quite possible if you're living in Serbia.
“As if everyone, all over the world, had his daily visually artistic task; the task of being an image for others.” Peter Handke
I like 2 aquatics:
Peggy: "Right now, we have to get to the mental institution. Something terrible has happened."
Peggy: "Brother Boy has tried to kill himself. He jumped out of his bedroom window."
Latrelle: "Isn't he only on the second floor?"
Peggy: "Yes, but he hit his head on a lawn gnome."
Fr. Sordid Lives: The Series
"Live, live, live! Life is a banquet, and most poor suckers are starving to death."
To my nose Coney Island is only Set Sail St. Barts + CdG Soda. A bad combination by the way.

Marketed to women, but I think they'd both smell wonderful on men - not too perfumey:
Dune (find at the drugstore - an acquatic, dry oriental)
Caron's Eau de Caron Pure (more unisex and more straightforward acquatic - nothing sweet or sour)
the Kenzos are also good, although I've only just sampled, not worn extensively
Another vote for L'eau Par Kenzo. For me this comes pretty close as being the ultimate aquatic.
What happened to you, Kenzo, why all this forgettable frags lately?
Like you Paintrman I have always been stauchly anti aquatic but recently have softened somewhat. I like amouage Arcus because it is so well made and has such a stunning development from start to totally non-aqautic finish. Also I have come back to Millesime Imperial because ....well it just smells really good . Brilliantly blended with high quality synthetics I just find it very pleasing.
Erolfa doesn't float my boat, bulgari just smells WRONG to me. Alessandro del Acqua is very well made if a bit mundane in concept.
I didnt mention Givenchy Blue Label and Aramis Surface, probably my two favorite aquatics along with MI, but being someone who dislikes aquatics, I surely didnt expect these to be the best suggestions for you.
I'm a fresh scent junkie and proud of it!
The original Kenzo Pour Homme remains my favorite, though I have to say L'Eau par Kenzo didn't impress me. Horizon (one of my first scents ever) reminds me of Kenzo somewhat apart from its oriental, sandalwood-heavy drydown. An oriental aquatic - not too many of those around. I believe Laguna Homme was similarly labeled - must try that one as well, as well as Gai Mattiolo Uomo, Bvlgari Aqua, Aqua Motu, blah blah blah...;-)
Also on my list, the usual suspects with a few dark horses...Erolfa, MI and SMW are all "watery" to my nose but with that certain something (and not just the price) that sets them apart from the crowd.
Mare by Beth Terry's really grown on me (thanks again tvlampboy!)...this summer it'll see a lot of use, esp. on beach days.
Although I think of it as ozonic (more "airy" than "watery" to my nose), both Oxygene and Oxygene Homme are very good - dry where most like this for whatever reason heap on that overdone, aggravating laundry-detergent/fabric-softener-from-hell note like I smell in L'Eau par Kenzo(galaxolides maybe...?).
Loves of Late: Agua Lavanda, Eau Sauvage, Gendarme, Guerlain Vetiver, Guerlain EdC Imperiale, Ivoire de Balmain, Kenzo PH, Mitsouko, Royall Lyme, Tabac Original
Kenzo homme is my favourite seaweed/acquatic scent - just don't expect any attention from females.
Nautilus Aqua is my fabourite woody marine scent.
Nautilus Black Marlin is my favourite marine oriental scent.
Nautilus Blazer is a marine something or other scent, which is none-the-less intriguing.
Insense Ultramarine really is Ultra in the marine department.
Dali's Laguna reminds me of a lagoon for some reason.
Halston Unbound is my favourite office aquatic.
I'm also very partial to Nautica original.
Erolfa is okay too.

Fougeres Marine and Erolfa
Estee Lauder Beyond Paradise
The best one I've tried is Amerigo Vespucci Marina Militaire. An extraordinary scent which conjures up the image of being aboard an old sea vessel. Wood creaking, the salty water slamming against the sides of the boat, occasionally causing some of it to end up on the deck making the salty smell mix with the smell of the wood. Mmmm... Did I mention it's excellent?
Beyond Amerigo, I've tried Il Prufumo's Aria di Mare and it didn't work for me. There's something I just can't stand in it. I'll try it again at a later date to see if I come warm up to it, but right now, no.
AdG I dunno. It's very popular and I can sometimes enjoy it other people (assuming it's been sprayed in moderation), but when I "examine" it I find AdG to be a bit sour, too sour.
I have Kenzo PH Fresh, it's rather aquatic than the original and and like it, though not as much as I did at the monent of impulse buying Alas both do have a kind of sweetness which I don't find appropriate for an aquatic scent.
Profumum Acqua di Sale, hands down.
Of the men's aquatic scents I've found Acqua di Gio to remind me of a man fresh out of the shower and L'eau d'Issey reminds me of a man fresh out of the ocean.
I don't get how "soapy" or "aquatic" scents are not supposed to be sexy?
Besides musks, they're the only fragrance family that make me imagine a man nude or in sexual positions. I don't imagine a man naked when he's wearing a more floral or woody type of scent.
With the aquatics it's more suggested and hinted at - like, "why yes, I did just take a shower...." Then I imagine him in the shower or coming out with just a towel on. With musks, I imagine the down & dirty. But maybe that's just me?
I've never come out of a shower wearing just a towel in my entire life.
For starters, I'd need some kind of long beach towel to be able to make some kind of knot that holds it up or else, with a standard towel, I'd have to resort to safety pins to keep it up - which I guess is how they do it in the movies.
Renato, in what world do you live in? it is so simple and easy to hold the towel. It was one of the first things that I learned as a child. Just after learning how to tie the knots on my shoes.
Virgo 75 is right, the image of a man coming out of the shower with a towel is very sexy.

Polo Blue is one of my favorites from this category.
I usually shy away from this category, but here are some of my favorites (and in no order):
Acqua di Gio. This one gets a bad rap, mainly because of its popularity, but it is still pretty fantastic for what it tries to do. The sea accord is really amazing. I used to wear it after swim practice and it worked perfectly.
Beyond Paradise Men. I know I gave this one a fat thumbs down before, but I just sprayed some on after a workout/shower and my mind has totally changed. This is some really nice juice. It will definitely be in my summer circulation.
Erolfa. Citrus, sea salt, and ambergris. Just perfect. Wear your dock shoes and tie your sweater around your neck for this one.
Millesime Imperial. At times this one wears a little too luxurious for me, but as a summer evening scent it is just sublime.

You are not your perfume.
My favorite overall is Dunhill Fresh.
Although to balance all those water lily aquatic plants smells it's got alot of dry patchouli, basil, and baby powder. So it's not a true 100% aquatic.
Bvlgari Aqva is a real true aquatic. It's loaded with that seagrass (posidonia) note, which imo is missing in the new Aqva Marine.
Also, it's not for me, but if anyone's looking for gourmet chlorine pool, grab some L'Eau Par Kenzo PH
I should get a sample of Acqua Di Gio just for old time's sake, but I don't know, since i have Bvlgari Aqva, I have no reason to go back to it, would I?
Try Aqva Marine by Bvlgari...is a mix between Acqua di Gio, Clinque Happy, the original Aqva and also a bit Aqua Motu...and the lasting power is amazing...good sillage too, believe me...try out!!!
Il Profumo Aria di Mare
Bvlgari Aqua/Aqua Marine
Beth Terry Mare.
I tried out a sample of Erolfa recently and, while I enjoyed the scent, I found both the sillage and longevity to be very poor. I can hardly smell the stuff on me at all, even while holding my wrist to my nose.
I vote for Bvlgari Aqua, since it's far less mainstream than L'Eau d'Issey and Aqua di Gio. It's a great frag.
