Tom Ford Private Blends
Top Notes: Citrus Fruits, Fruity Notes
Middle Note: Black Violet
Base Notes: Moss, Woody Notes
Strange and a little raspy at first, this eventually sorts out to a very subtly resinous place after passing through some violet-evocative notes. I say "violet-evocative" because this is not the modern take on violet, which is more about violet leaf than it is about the elusive floral violet, which is impossible to distill from the plant and must be hinted at through the use of ionone and other synthetics. The "violet" in this fragrance takes after the floral side in spades. It is well balanced, however, with citrus and other fruity notes in the top, and nicely anchored in a mossy-woody base. This gives the scent the feel of a chypre. It's a fairly deep take on the title player, but then most of the Special Blends are at least somewhat deep and dark. This one, though, does manage to end on a subtler note. It becomes quite soft and elusive at the end. In my book, it's one of the better ones from this series.

Yr good bud,

Have I told you about the scent of jasmine? Have I spoken about the smell of the sea? The earth is scented. And I perfume myself to enhance what I am. That's why I can not wear a perfume that bothers me. Perfuming is an instinctive wisdom. And like all art, it requires some knowledge of yourself..."

Hermes Hermessence Poivre Samarcande
No secret of my fondness for Jean-Claude Ellena . I’ve been especially fond of many of the fragrances he’s produced since becoming head perfumer at Hermes. In many ways the Hermessence line is M. Ellena’s exploration of single-note perfumery as each seems to focus on the feeling a note focused fragrance can bring.
Poivre Samarcande was one of the original group of Hermessences released in 2004 it is also the most gender specific of the original four. The peppery feel of Poivre Samarcande is not as strong as Lorenzo Villoresi’s Piper Nigrum nor quite as light as The Different Company’s Rose Poivree; just like Goldilocks, on me, Poivre Samarcande feels just right.
The top of Poivre Samarcande begins with the promised pepper. First the arid feel of black pepper appears followed quickly by the more piquant smell of chili pepper. The pepper is in place for a good period before cedar begins to add its strong lines to the development. The choice of cedar as complement to the pepper is a good one, as it keeps things light while adding some foundation to the fragrance. As the base appears things still stay on the lighter side as a very light mix of musk with a bare hint of moss closes the proceedings.
Poivre Samarcande has average longevity and below average sillage on me. Poivre Samarcande is, like most of the Hermessences, a skin scent for the most part.
M. Ellena has crafted another winner such that when I’m looking at my wardrobe and wondering, “Would you like pepper with that?” Poivre Samarcande is what I sprinkle on my skin.
Have a Trusty Tuesday everyone.

Bogart Pour Homme

Azzaro Pour Homme
Hugo Element. I loved this when I had a test spray on my wrist and noted far more than the uber-calone that most reviews suggested - a hint of green, some light citrus and a pleasant oceanic. I'm an unashamed HB fan anyway, but when I went for the normal spray on my chest and behind the ears today I was confused by the slightly sweaty opening, under-whelmed by the dry-down and now, five hours later, am struggling to detect anything at all. Ho-hum.
