Default How do I mix oil with dilluted alcohol?

For example sandalwood, frankincense or vetiver.

How do I mix this? Where can I find the alcohol? How much oil for how much alcohol?
Experts please help me on this one. I'm very interested in the art of perfume making.

Simply put a certain amount of the essential oil in alcohol and stir. The alcohol should be strong, at least 90%, and as odorless as possible.

Add as much as you like as long as it dissolves in the alcohol. An old fashioned perfume contained up to about 35% fragrance in 100% perfume, a splash cologne can contain as less as 1% fragrance. So to 100 gram alcohol you can add 1-50 gram essential oils, as long as they do dissolve. This is different for the different kinds of essential oils.

The best place to get alcohol depends on the country / state you live in.

For the Netherlands there are two options:
    - purchase 96% pure alcohol (in Dutch: zuiver, niet gedenatureerd). Some pharmacists (Apotheek, not Drogist) sell this. It ususaly costs at least 35 euro per liter, but 65 euro isn't uncommon too.
    - purchase "cosmetisch haarwater" from De Hekserij (www.hekserij.nl). It has a faint bergamot fragrance but is mainly pure alcohol and costs only 7.50 euro per liter.

70% alcohol will solve maybe 2% fragrant material, so is simply not strong enough for most perfumes.

    How about Vodka?

The most common percentage of alcohol in vodka is between 30 and 50%, that is too low to be usable for perfume, even if you could find 80% vodka it would be hard to use because it will only solve about 2-3% fragrance compounds.

    Thanks Jan.
I'll probably get some from 'De Hekserij'.
I hope the bergamot in their alcohol will not be overwhelming.
Kind of strange you can't find cheap pure alcohol over here though..

    I found this website:
    http://www.brouwland.com/nl/
If you look at the liqueur section you can find 500 ml alcohol (96%) for 20 euro's.
Might be an OK deal if you don't want the bergamot interfering with your essential oils.

I have an 80% (160 proof) vodka (Brand = Devil's Springs). So far I haven't found anything I couldn't disolve up to 10%. I haven't tried greater than 10%. I've tried both EOs from the supermarket and single notes from The Perfumer's Apprentice.

The bergamot is not at all overwhelming. I find that it give the perfumes a much smoother top than the perfumer's alcohol. I'd really recommend it.

Is a reasonable price (40 euro / liter).

De Hekserij seems to be a better option.
