Default Lavender Frags - do they go sour or break down after several years?

Does anyone have any experience with vintage Lavender frags? Have you ever come across a vintage or New Old Stock bottle that has gone sour or lost its lavender scent?

I own vintage Parfum de Toilette of Jicky by Guerlain. The lavender (and the fragrance itself) is just fine.

Is there a reason that you think lavender is more susceptible to spoilage than other floral note(s)?

I have noticed that. Fougeres tend to get a little sour with age. I found a bottle of very expired lavender oil last week and the off note is definitely very similar to some of the vintage lavenders I've come across.

I always thought lavender was one of the more stable ingredients? Obviously not!

I can't speak from much experience, although I have a bottle of no-name lavender water which is about 6 years old and smells the same as it did when I bought it.

Lavender can indeed go south if not stored properly. When it turns it's BAD.

Perhaps this is why so many lavender scents smell very bitter and sour, very repugnant to me, I always assumed it was just different varieties.

Hmmm, I guess anything can dilapidated over atleast a good 30++ years, though as far as I know most perfumes stay strong!

The reason I asked is because I recently got a bottle of Atkinsons English Lavender and was curious about some vintage lavender scents which tend to pop up on ebay a lot. Guess I will stay away.

It happened to me, it broke down: the EO got separated from the alcohol. It smelt rotten.

Lavender is especially susceptible to turning on you... how you store it will make a huge difference. Kept airtight out of heat and light it can last a good, long time!
