Default You know what smells awesome? Celery!

I had an interesting fragrance experience today. Having bought some celery for the first time, I think, in my entire life - I was traumatized by too much of it as a small child, its stringy, Cheez Whiz-filled stems being de rigueur for snacks back then - I noticed, for the first time, just how much I like its smell.

I think it says something about either how smell-obsessed I am, or how tolerant my friends are of my hobby, that a friend thought nothing of me taking a bunch of celery out the fridge and asking her to smell the base of it.

"Doesn't that just smell great?" I said.

She commented that it reminded her of some curry spice, and I volunteered that it might be fenugreek ( I smell a resemblance between the two ).

I've only smelled a recognizable celery note in one fragrance, Lutens' Mandarine Mandarin, but there it's combined with fruit in such a way that I'm honestly reminded of ketchup.

Now, I'm not entirely sure this is the case, but if there are tomato-leaf and carrot-flower fragrances, surely the celery plant has had the same honor at one point or another?

You sir, need to check out Grain de Plaisir by MPG.

And also sniff Yatagan, although I don't really pick up a celery note in that scent personally, many do.

Doesn't Yatagan encompass a healthy celery note? It's been a while since I tried it, I should probably give it a go again!

Absolutely. It's a big, bold blast of celery seed, something I thought I wouldn't like, but it works well.

Yatagan has a very definite celery note. I also get that fenugreek/curry smell out of it.

If you love celery as a note, you should RUN, not walk, and get a bottle of Yatagan indeed.

I usually get a (pleasant) celery note from frags generally described as being "soapy".

GB: I see you've tried Yatagan. Did you not catch the celery-ish note? I think it's similar but not exactly the same. I honestly hardly notice it.

Another nod to Grain de Plaisir, and I agree that it is more celery seed than leaf. Slightly nutty and peppery, quite good as a herbal note.

Phileas by Nina Ricci is an outstanding fragrance with a masterful celery note. It’s discontinued but miniatures still available online.

Many rooty vetiver fragrances have a celery quality to them. I personally can't stand it in any form (it's a long story), but as a substitute, fennel root is delicious.

Donna Karan Be Delicious Men (the green apple) gives off a very noce celery notie which is the only thing I like about it. Grain de Plaisir has a thick cutrus opening that I could do without. But celery in Dzongkha? I will have to look again....

Thank you for creating a safe haven where I may R*A*V*E about the smell of a freshly scraped, sweet carrot without ridicule. Isn't it just the dew on a rose?

I rather like a celery note, but my husband loathes it and is very quick to detect it. At which point he dismisses the scent entirely.

You must be talking about Iris Silver Mist

When I think of celery, I think of Bond No. 9's Wall Street.

    And Yatagan.

Yes, there is a celery based soft drink.

I wondered where this thread went. Thanks for the suggestions! I'll be trying them all.

Yatagan doesn't smell like celery at all to me, though. How odd.

I love carrot notes. When I first smelled Iris Silver Mist I thought "Huh? Carrots?" But now I just LOVE that earthy quality the carrots bring to the fragrance.

    Didn't L'Artisan have a carrot fragrance a while back...?

Ha! That is something I'll have to try next time I'm in Miami.

Yes, L’Artisan Fleur de Carotte. Big disappointment. The sweet-and-juicy character has yet to be captured anywhere in my experience. Oh, boo-hoo for poor me.
