    Hermès
    Équipage
    (1970)
    Guy Robert
    Spicy Oriental

    ------------------
Top Notes : Aldehyde, Bergamot Oil, Clary Sage Oil, Mace, Orange, Rosewood
Heart Notes: Carnation, Cinnamon, Jasmine, Lily of the Valley, Pine Needle
Base Notes: Moss, Musk, Patchouli, Tonka, Vanilla, Vetiver
    ------------------

A spicy-floral chypre from 1970, this is a heady combination laced with aldehydes and some clary sage in the top notes. Carnation is the head of the floral accord in the heart with jasmine and muguet completing the triad. A chypre base adds musk, coumarin, vetiver, and vanilla for depth and roundness. Some people find this slightly medicinal (I suspect the nutmeg and mace play a role in this impression); others, like me, just find it exotic, like a beautiful face endowed with a strikingly odd nose — but the tones are so warm and rich, the angles and planes are so perfect, the underlying structure so blatantly classical that the beauty of the whole is undeniable.

Longevity on this one is creepy. I've been wearing it since 9AM today and can still smell it (lighter of course) by 4PM...no reapplication...and that to me is weird, to think I've had 2 cigs and been outside, driving in the heat. Weird, in a good way.

To start the day I needed something bold.

    Parfum D’Empire Fougere Bengale

Annick Goutal’s Sables introduced me to the maple syrup crossed with gingerbread beauty of immortelle. Christian Dior Eau Noire took that immortelle and swirled it with lavender to make something entirely different and equally memorable. In 2007 Parfum d’Empire added a third remarkable entry to the immortelle sweepstakes in Fougere Bengale.

Immmortelle is one of those big bold notes in perfumery which come in and take over everything. It takes a smart perfumer to choose which notes to pair with it. Anything too light and it will get blown away. Anything too strong and it runs the risk of being out of tune. Francis Kurkdjian defined one excellent partner in lavender, in Eau Noire, and that combination is present in Fougere Bengale. Where the two fragrances diverge is after that as Fougere Bengale slides more towards the fougere the name promises.

The top of Fougere Bengale begins with an herbal duet of lavender and tarragon. This is lavender in its slightly astringent, less floral aspect. Matched with the sharp tarragon it sets the stage for the immortelle quite beautifully. The immortelle begins to show up and it first seems like a tobacco note is trying to peek out in the earliest stages before the full immortelle accord appears. At this point Fougere Bengale and Eau Noire feel very similar and side-by-side on my skin they smell pretty similar. Fougere Bengale then takes a turn for the fougere in the title as patchouli, tonka and a dollop of oakmoss arrive to finish this off. The finish of Fougere Bengale is what allows it to stand apart, quite wonderfully, from Eau Noire in particular.

Fougere Bengale has excellent longevity and modest sillage unlike either Sable or Eau Noire. If you’re looking for an immortelle fragrance that doesn’t announce itself to the world Fougere Bengale might be the best choice of the three.

Sables introduced me to immortelle and made me love it. Eau Noire took that love and showed me that there could be more than just immortelle. Fougere Bengalle takes what came before and combines them to make it my favorite of the three.

    Have a Terrific Tuesday everyone.
