    Lightbulb Terrible opening awesome drydown

Title says it all. Which fragrances that you own has opening that you dont like but beautiful drydown.. ? Which are worth waiting an half hour, hour or 2 just to get to that yummy drydown...? Which one shouldnt I throw away just because I dont like them straight from bottle or sampling paper?

From my collection of samples and full bottles its definitely Pi and Le Male. How about yours?

I guess that Dreamer will be in top list

I think the initial opening of Aramis Tuscany is dreadful - smells like rotting fruit doused in talcum powder to me - but, fortunately, that's gone literally within a minute and the rest is, of course, wonderful.

St. Dupont Passenger has a watery opening, almost like an expired water of incense powder, but wait, and you'll be surprised at how good it is.

I can't think of any scent that I've experienced that could muster a wonderful drydown if it had a terrible opening. A much-beloved scent here however, Santal Noble, has a so-so, schizoid opening to me, but then launches through an amazing transformation and into a long, beautiful drydown.

Rochas Moustache! It's a favourite of mine and I wear it often but the first 30 seconds - WOAH!!!! You have to be careful not to breathe it in too deeply or it can bring on an attack of the sneezes! It's a pure citrus blast of fizzy lemon and lime with uncertones of civet and pine that literally takes your breathe away!! The drydown is fantastic though and although it's a slightly odd fragrance it is very moreish.

I like it personally but I know a lot of people are put-off by the opening of Czech & Speake's Cuba.

Aoud Cuir d'Arabie is the poster child for this category, to my nose. Truly evil top notes worth wading through.

I'm not crazy about Vetiver Oriental's first half, but it's second half is sublime.

MPGs Parfum d'Habit. The top note has been described as "dirty socks." The drydown is an elegant vetiver/leather on me.

Cereus 14. Starts pretty ho-hum but after 2 hours the dry down is just incredible. I wish I could describe it. Just smells wonderful.

Paul Smith Story. That grapefruit note in the beginning is just a bit too much, but the vetiver was done really well a half hour later.

Such is the case with nearly every heavy Maitre masculine, as well as most of the older private/edt CREED line.

One more I've found with a surprisingly great drydown, with a mercifully quick, awful literal whiskey top, is Demeter's Whiskey Tobacco.

Aoud Cuir d' Arabie is definately no1 in that aspect(very mature cheese). Strange,in fact the term "schizoid" that vicozani used is extremely accurate, is trademark for many MPG fragrances, Santal Noble (cheese), Jardin du Nil (cheese), vintage Route du Vetiver (mildew). The opening of Le Labo Patchouli 34 (like burning leaves) is not ugly but it has nothing to do with the peppery vanilla of the drydown. Oud 27's opening smells like a jungle animal breathing in your face but the drydown is soft and warm as rich suede.

For me, I am not especially fond of the topnotes in Creed's Bois du Portugal. Absolutely love the drydown though.

I am now finding the opening of Lagerfeld Classic to be a bit of challenge. Again, I love the drydown.

One Man Show. It's like getting maced in the face at first, but has a really interesting, cold, gray, spicy drydown.

New formula Shalimar extrait- the opening is very harsh, bright, tinny and then it's beautiful when the top notes have gone. They need to soften the opening abit , IMHO. It always shocks me even though I do love my Shalimar.

Caron PUH, the opening can be quite overbearing but the drydown is pretty subtle. Same goes for Caron Le Troisieme Homme, harsh opening but the smokey vanilla drydown is heavenly.

Serge Lutens Santal de Mysore has a very 'Indian spices' opening but the drydown is where the gorgeous gorgeous sandalwood emerges.
