    Lightbulb Established Niche Masterpieces

I'm going to be dropping by Aedes de Venustas in NYC tomorrow and was wondering what you guys think are niche masterpieces for men that I should absolutely smell. Below is their selection. Let me know what you think are the kings of the male niche world!

This may or may not be helpful, but:

    1. I think you'll find the majority of niche is unisex, including many of the niche favorites on the male board. There is no need to limit yourself to the small few with "pour homme" on the bottle!

    2. You're likely to get a huge difference of opinion on what are the best male niche fragrances, and lots of suggestions, so prepare to do a ton of sampling.

Perhaps it would help to start by asking what your current favorites are...?

I'm pretty open to discover anything. I'm most curious to grab samples of Chergui, Ambre Sultan and some of the Amouage line. Although, they have quite a selection and would love to know of other gems in their store. I'm currently crazy about Creed's Windsor, but that's just a current obsession.

From what I know, they have these on the shelf at Aedes:
Serge Lutens - Muscs Koublaï Khän, Chergui
    Amouage - Gold Men
    L'Artisan - Havana Vaniile
    Annick Goutal - Sables
    Diptyque - Eau Lente

From a strictly personal viewpoint, it's thanks to frags like most Acqua di Parma ranges, Creed Bois du Portugal, Penhaligon's Blenheim Bouquet, Sege Lutens Ambre Sultan and many, many more that niche is truly living up to its reputation.

You'll find Amouage and Lutens quite different from the Creeds ( though they're both great lines well worth looking into ). If you like some of the more restrained English vibe of a house like Creed, Penhaglion's and Heeley are good lines to look into, and if you like transparency in your fragrances, L'Artisan and Diptyque.

You seem to be in a good headspace, so in general, just walk into the place with an open mind and time to spare, and there's a great chance you'll find something you love.

I think these are stand-outs, though not all personal favorites:
    Tauer L'Air du Desert Marocaine

Lutens Ambre Sultan (also Borneo and Chergui)
    Idole de Lubin
    Amouage Homage Attar
    Etro Messe de Minuit
    Santa Maria Novella Nostalgia
    TDC Sel de Vetiver
    My Wardrobe

It's Aedes so you'll find a good selection of Diptyques and L'Artisans and SMNs. They guys there are so nice that you'll be able to get as many samples as you want I'm sure. There may be too much to try because it's all goo there. See what you can take home with you in samples.

I highly doubt they stock the vintage Santal Noble and, from what I see on their website, Black Aoud is not sold there, otherwise I would have recommended both these fine fragrances.

You are correct. Sorry for any confusion on that.

I don't think they carry CDG either. I really messed that up.

    Oh well...Ignore me please.

Good luck. On my last NY vacation I spent hours there. I'd been walking all day so I was exhausted and at times sitting on their floor. They didn't mind...

Some BN-approved masterpieces worth checking out:

Serge Lutens - Chergui, Ambre Sultan (you should probably just smell them all...)
L'Artisan - Their own Aedes de Venustas is a mind-blowing incense gourmand, be sure to try it. Also Timbuktu & Fou d'Absinthe.
    Lalique - Encre Noire
Creed - If you havn't tried Creed, start with Bois du Portugal to get a sense of their classics and Millisime Imperial to get a sense of their currents.
    Diptyque - Tam Dao
Santa Maria Novella - Nostalgia for interesting leather, Melograno for an idea of their powdery classics.
Amouage - Pretty much anything Amouage is BN-approved.
By Kilian - Back to Black is probably the most masculine

for BN trendiness, be sure to sniff the Maison Francis Kudjian, too.

    Happy sniffing!

I was going to recommend 21 from Costume National but I see that they don't carry that house so that's a shame.

FYI -- Even though it's still on the website, they don't sell anything from Tauer's line. Last month I was on a hunt in NYC for LDDM and nobody, even Aedes, carried it. Had to go online. I also recall them phasing out the Montales as well.

They are in the midst of phasing out the Montales, actually. I went in today and had a great time. I ended coming home with samples of Amouage Reflection Man, Lutens' Chergui and Penhaligon's Endymion. My hunt for a niche signature is getting closer! Thanks for all your help!!!!!!!!
