Default Can One Trust eBay When Buying Perfumes?!

I see that alot of you guys,
use the Bay to buy vintage
    perfumers. I have thought
    about doing the same thing
for some time. But I do not
    quite trust the various sel-
lers. There are alot of hoa-
    xers outthere.

So, tell me, have you ever
    been cheated when buying
    of off eBay?!

    That being new or vintage
    scents..!

    Knock on wood!!
I have never had a problem buying on E-Bay, but I usually don't buy any vintage perfumes. The only one I bought was a travel size Femme, and because of the canister it is housed in, it could have never been exposed to light, although the juice was a bit dark. It smells delicious. Usually I avoid things that are too good to be true, and I look at feedback.

Yes, I guess I could look at ppl's feed,
but it would still be somewhat dull to
    recieve a fake frag.
Today hoaxers sell fake frags in original
boxes - one needs to be sharp.

always check sellers in www.toolhaus.org for hidden / deleted feedback.
There are various fragrances that are commonly faked - usually more popular ones - however you'd be surprised.
I tend to use ebay for bargains, if its a fragrance I know I like I'm happy to pay the extra $ to get it from a trusted e-tailer.

I bought a fake Chanel No. 5 and a fake Fahrenheit on eBay from two different sellers. I got my money back, but I'm really careful about who I buy from now.

Make sure they have 99-100% positive feedback and they are "top rated sellers" with a great reputation for over a year and especially during the last 30 days.

You need to be careful when you buy stuff from ebay, that's all. It helps to have a sharp eye and attention for details when you look at pics of merchandise.

I buy almost only vintages and have personally never received a fake fragrance.

Mainly buy from eBay, never got cheated. Then again, new Guerlains are never faked, and for the vintage, I pay a lot of attention to details like sealing, juice colour and overall impression of the seller's wording and behavior.

I echo Mr. Guerlain . I have bought a lot of vintage and new perfume from Ebay - you just have to be really careful. One time I got conned with Opium EDT- there's a seller on Ebay who lists new Opium EDT ,boxed and sealed every day or so, it seems - starting at 0.99 ct bids. These usually end up going for 35-45 dollars and they are fake.

Luckily I have never been cheated or duped, but that doesn't mean that it doesn't happen.

Like most people here, I've had good luck. Read descriptions very carefully, ask questions, check feedback.

Sometimes you h=get really lucky and discover you are purchasing from a BNer, as I did a few weeks ago!

Sometimes its a little hit and miss.
Whilst I dont feel Ive ever been "duped" with a vintage ebay purchase, I have sometimes bought on a whim - perhaps because of a beautiful flacon - and occasionally find the juice has turned.
I don't think there are many faked vintage scents, but its a little like playing roulette as far as the juice's integrity is concerned. The advice given above (pertaining to checking seals/labels and the context in which the item is advertised) is very good.

You can usually tell legit and/or sincere sellers who don't really know what they've got, from the fakes/sellers just trying to make a fast buck. Just be sensible and use common sense is all, as with anything on the 'Bay.

    Cheated, no.

Disappointed, yes. Like Dimitri I have sometimes found that the juice has deteriorated.

No problems at all with buying scent via eBay, but I was also very careful.

I've found that the folks trying to sell massive quantities of anything (but usually something popular like Chanel) are selling fakes. I bought a fake Coco edp and learned my lesson.

But, most people selling used/vintage fragrances are legit as are the discounters with their own storefronts. Less popular frags don't have the appeal to attempt counterfeiting anyway. Vintage is always a gamble, but I've lucked out with lots of vintage Guerlains and even a .5 oz. Chanel No. 5 parfum for $12.

    Good Luck.

I've bought a couple scents on eBay and have never had any issues. Then again I always stick with reputable sellers that have 99.9% positive feedback and have a long history of transactions.

When I buy from Ebay, I tend to buy only from sellers with a lot of good feedback. So far I've never had a problem.

I've had a problem once when I first started out in fragrances. The person had good feedback and many transactions with others but my bottle was obviously tampered with since it leaked and it smelled nothing like the fragrance since I already owned it. From that day I said that I would never buy fragrances from eBay. There are just too many other places to buy fragrances.

On eBay, I recommend you do not buy wildly popular perfumes (eg Acqua di Gio, D&G Light Blue, pretty much any of the department-store Chanels). I got burned with a bottle of fake "Coco" from eBay once, though it was a very good fake that it even took me a while to figure out what was wrong with it.

If you buy something more obscure, eg my eBay purchases include Guerlain's "L'instant Magic" and Jette Joop's "Jette", it's more likely to be the real ones. I know because I've opened those 2 eBay-bought bottles and can certify that they are "the one and the true thing."

Though most of my other ones are purchased from either fragrancenet or fragrancex.

    Me too.

That quote is the final word in any debate where someone asserts "A guy can't wear ____ because it smells so feminine" or "There is such a thing as a difference between a male or female fragrance". I often just go in debates like this, announce that quote, and leave the argument - end of story...

Looking at the cap there is no signs of aging. Also, the box is pretty much beat up (its wrinkled and mossed), however, the bottle's label is perfect without any indication of weathering. even if the bottle is *vintage*, it certainly was not from 1968 or from the box avertised.

what kind of box are you expecting for 40 years..? The label is not perfect, but i admit the label is more likely to be peeled more in common situations. The box is original, and the printing label/color is common for its time.

That is probably one of the oldest scents you can find. It's also called "kolnische Wasser" which translates literally as "water from Cologne." In other words, it's the original eau de cologne.
