    Woody Chypre

    ------------------
Top Notes: Bergamot, Coriander, Green Notes, Lemon, Rosewood
Middle Notes: Carnation, Geranium, Jasmine, Lily of the Valley, Orris Root, Rose
Base Notes: Amber, Civet, Moss, Patchouli, Sandalwood, Vetiver
    ------------------

A very nice green floral chypre for men, not given the kudos it deserves. This is a very good example of how the "feminine" idiom can be made to fit the "masculine" market through simple marketing and tacit acceptance. There's nothing in this that is inherently exclusively suited to either gender, but it's abundantly clear that acceptance is everything in a case like this: slap an authoritative label on it, and that's what it becomes — nay, what it has always been! Perfect for cool, rainy weather.

Have I told you about the scent of jasmine? Have I spoken about the smell of the sea? The earth is scented. And I perfume myself to enhance what I am. That's why I can not wear a perfume that bothers me. Perfuming is an instinctive wisdom. And like all art, it requires some knowledge of yourself..."

    EDIT:
I retract this, I wore Milliseme Imperial and was it ever a good day for it. I put one spray on the front of my neck, one on the back and it projected like crazy on me today! This was really only my second wearing of this frag so I've yet to learn it's nuances. Most scents seem to me, to lose their strength right away on me but this lived for about seven hours and it was for the most part the same sillage straight through.

Finishing the week of small perfumers with a new one.

    Costamor Sugarwood

I grew up in South Florida and spent a lot of time traveling throughout the Caribbean. For those of you who have visited any of those islands the one consistent crop that grows on, almost all, of them is sugar cane. If you go on a tour of any of these islands it is almost inevitable that you will be taken to a sugar plantation and handed a stalk of sugar cane to suck on. If you’ve ever had that experience you’ve smelled the unique smell of green and sweet that natural sugar cane produces, it is a singular sensation.

In 2009 Elizabeth Wright founded Costamor mainly to produce perfumes that capture the smells of her childhood trips to Costa Rica. One of the first offerings from Costamor is Sugarwood. For Sugarwood she wanted a fragrance that captured that raw sugar cane experience in olfactory form. In many ways I think it took a perfumer who has spent time in the tropics to really understand what was necessary to create this sugar cane accord because Ms. Wright manages to achieve it.

Sugarwood begins with that sugar cane accord and it is a moist sweetness coupled with a slight green woodiness. Ms. Wright makes a great choice in pairing this sugar cane accord with a green fig note. The fig serves to delineate the green aspect of the sugar cane while modulating the sweetness. This combination will be present throughout the development of Sugarwood. The heart is a gentle mix of iris, jasmine, and peony. It gives a light floral heart to Sugarwood that is a nice complement to the sugar cane. The base is cedar and vanilla with a hint of musk. The vanilla takes Sugarwood into more traditional sweet territory but Ms. Wright keeps a light hand on the vanilla and therefore it never really overwhelms the closing stages of Sugarwood.

Sugarwood has average longevity and below average sillage.

It is nice to find fragrances that remind one of one’s youth. It is even nicer to find one with the quality of Sugarwood.

    Have a Flippant Friday everyone.

Guerlain's Parure EdT. This perfume is so odd and striking and so long-lasting! Lilac-rose-plum up top, leather-patchouli-oakmoss behind. It smells like a very masculine leather chypre with some diva-like lilac and rose thrown in - the result is quite special...
