Default Declaration Cartier Hit or Miss?

    Good day Fume-heads,
So I recently bought Declaration Cartier online because Jean Claude Ellena is one of my favourite perfumer out there owing to his great works like TdH, VdH etc... Now I need opinions on this fragrance from Fume-heads that own this fragrance, if possible a comparison to another fragrance will be helpful too.

A very nice woody and musky floral scent. Somewhat unique IMO. Nothing readily comes to my mind.

Its inspiration was Eau d'Hermes and closest I can think of (if we don't count the flankers) is probably Bigarade Concentree, also by Ellena.

It's very good fragrance but personally I prefer Eau d'Hermes and Bigarade Concentree.

The waxy cumin/cardamom combo was way too much for me. In effect, it was a big miss. Terre d'Hermes used a bit of the Declaration DNA and got it right.

big hit for me although the cumin doesnt always work on my skin and it can go 'wrong' - I actually prefer the essense version - but not such a fan of the soir flanker

I remembered having a 200mL of this and finishing it in a single calendar year. It was a signature of mine. I often gotten many compliments wearing it. Another was Hermes d'Voyage edt. Sort of similar in the drydown as that was a signature of mine as well once upon a time.

JCE's masterpiece for sure, and lots of his subsequent creations for Hermes are indeed very similar, particularly Bigarade Concentree.

But outside of Hermes, 2 that are in the same genre are Frapin L'Humaniste (less spicy, more floral and fresh), and Jacques Fath Yang (less spicy, more tea, sandalwood and musk).

But I truly think that Declaration made the man!

One of the few non-niche fragrances that I own and cherish. People love it, and to me it's a masterpiece. Bigarade Concentree by Malle has terrible longevity for such a high price, and Terre d'Hermes is nice, but to me a very different and more safe scent. Declaration is quite striking and unique. I also appreciate that the cumin turns many people off to it, it won't work for everyone so I'm glad that it works for me.

LOVE! ...but... it's not quite me.

I think Declaration is fantastic, but it took me some time to appreciate. Where Terre d'Hermes smells strikingly modern, Declaration has a touch of an old school vibe to it. I don't think it smells dated. Instead, I think it smells nostalgic. It smells modern, but reminiscent of another era. Thumbs way up!

Woody masculine, fresh spicey...very wearable all year round, I enjoy Essence of Declaration too; the new blue turqoise colored juice is veery nice. But don't care for ...d un Soir, bcs it has a very strong note that reminds me of the Bond powder.
A kinda similliar would be Hermes Voyage, Dior's Eau Savage, Aqua di Parma and Cartiers Declaration Eau Gènèreuse, of-course.

Count me in as a miss.

    • Spray it on paper -- smells nice, a slightly spicy kind of citrus.
    • Spray it on skin -- caraway/cumin explosion. Way too intense, more like an Indian spice kitchen. I just don't want to smell like that.

Really amazing how it smells different depending upon temperature.

Hit! Have always enjoyed Declaration. Also like Declaration Essence and L' Eau flankers. Sometimes I prefer Essence and others I like the original - season of year does affect my preferences. I have never really smelled cumin in Declaration at all. I do get the the use of bitter and aromatic woods such as birch, teak, artemsia, wormwood, caraway, cardamom, juniper, bitter orange, etc. But not cumin. The bitters of Declaration and Essence remind me of a fragrance version of various gin formulations. Some gin uses less astringent bitters and juniper berries etc. but some like Hendricks uses bolder palette. To me Declaration is slightly bolder and more bitter while Essence has more floralizing power behind the woods. Both have lots bitter notes mixed in with the vetiver and cedar but different combinations. L' Eau actually smells more of a powdery woods base than vetiver woods to my nose - but I like it as well. Nicely done on all these. Just for reference I don't care for L' Un Soir or Terre d' Hermes at all. I do like the TdH Eau Fraiche though - thats kind of nice.

A miss, sad to say. I love the first twenty minutes or so but then I'm like, ok, that's enough BO. I'll wear it in the dead of winter, for a change of pace, and I have enough to keep doing that for a few more years. Of course the comparable is Eau d'Hermes. I've never read this but I detect a lot of Bulgari green tea, Ellena's 1993 creation, underneath the animalic humanity that predominates Declaration.

Love it! Still waiting to get the 200ml bottle while use up the samples...on my skin its opens with a huge bang of cardamom, orange and woods, then a hint of cinnamon, cardamom and pepper and finally some vetiver and and woods and some Amber (are people confusing cardamom with cumin?) and stays on for 12 hours or more, not linear...for a designer frag I like it a lot

I do get a very specific cumin-like smell, which I actually believe is due to the caraway which is listed as a note. There's no denying the sharpness of that caraway/cumin note, even a jarful of cardamoms would not pack that punch. The cardamom is also there- its sweetness links together the cumin/caraway note and the citrus notes IMO.

Anyway, what's important is that it is fantastic!

    @blackheart2925- I didn't like d'un soir either.

I kinda like it at first but nowadays struggling with this scent (and essence version too). It is simply a little rough on the spices for me, cumin and such. A much better interpretation of the concept is, in my opinion, bigarade concentree. By the same Jean Claude, no less. Another great variation on the genre that comes to mind would be L'humaniste. A fantastic take, and very sparkingly clean (if funky spices are not your thing)

When I smell it, I am instantly brought to sipping a cup of chai tea. It has the characteristic spicy punch of chai tea: cardamom infused with sweetness, although its unclear to me if the sweetness comes from the bergamot or rather hints of cinnamon, cloves, and ginger as in real chai tea. The sweetness dissipates and slowly the bitter orange emerges, side by side with the remaining cardamom. As the cardamom continues to fade, the bitter orange is joined by the dry, mellow, woody base.

For me a hit, due to the complexity and uniqueness.

Over time it's a lot more interesting than Terre d'Hermes.

I totally agree. I have the Terre De Hermes Eau De Toilette, Parfum, and Eau Tres Fraiche and I like all three - However, Cartier Declaration is more interesting and complex. It develops through stages and is very long lasting.

Smelling Declaration makes your world feel a little bigger. Terre d'Hermes just makes you glad it's a lot better than most. It also has a lot more to say with some heat and sweat. I'd take either one over most of the hundreds of niche fragrances I've owned and sampled over the last ten years.

Very good and unique scent and in warmer weather to be perfectly layered with the Cartier Declaration L'Eau version too give it real strength!
