Yes but it seems to be more prominent about an hour after showering. If I spray it on straight away all I get is mint, grapefruit, cedar and cilantro.

Smells more like vanilla and cedar than ambergris, to me.

Once it dries down I mostly detect the rhubarb and cedarwood.

First things first: is there really ambergris in it ? That's a relatively precious ingredient an d I wonder how they can fit it in budgetwise.

If it's there I cannot smell it. But this does not mean anything because ambergris is generally not added to be detected separately, but to support, enlarge or round off an accord, or the overall impression of a perfume. The only cologne where I can smell the presence of Ambergris is Eau d'Hermes. During the eight or more hours Life Jazz lasts on me it changes from almost not there to being very present again. It could be that ambergris is responsible for that. With or without - a wonderfully discrete companion, safe in any environment.

I'm confuzzled by this one. Sometimes it's all rhubarb and vanilla musk, while other times all I smell is the cilantro. The mint is only a supporting cast member for me. The ambergris is subtle, if there at all (I can't even say I smell it for sure) and I alternate constantly between love and hate on it.

But what's really bugging me is: Does anyone else find that the mint is overpowered by the coriander?

Most of the time I am very proud of the Basenotes community. Time after time I have witnessed the thoughtfulness, empathy & genuine friendship that members of this community extend to others - oldtimers & newcomers alike. There are other times, however, when egos get the upper hand and civility goes out the window. My philosophy is that I won't say anything here that I would not say if you were standing in front of me. Welcome to Basenotes, each and every one of us. ~ TwoRoads

Wait for the drydown. The basenotes contain a heavy dose of ambroxan. I finished a bottle a while ago...the grapefruit-cilantro combo is interesting, but the fake mint note didnt hold my interest for long.

I hope you waited for the drydown. You may have robbed yourself of the stellar basenotes. Someone told me "you smell wealthy" when I was wearing this.

I does not make sense to me that a perfumer would use fake mint; real mint is so inexpensive. Why do you think it is fake?

I think that is ambroxan, some interpret it as a sweet cedar, but it is often used as an ambergris note.

I agree. Ambergris can be an elusive note to really pin down. I've got several synthetic materials such as ambroxan, lactoscaton, cedramber, etc. which are used to approximate ambergris--I also have a small amount of real ambergris tincture as a reference. Real ambergris is so multifaceted and almost fickle in some ways--very hard to categorize.

I just recently got a sample of Paco Rabanne's Ultraviolet Man which is promoted as a synthetic ambergris heavy scent. I tried it and found that although it's synthetic, it gives a very good presentation of how the ambergris note comes across in perfumes. If you really want to get a reference for synthetic ambergris, try Ultraviolet Man and you'll be able to compare it to the Creeds and other scents with an ambergris base. It's a great reference ambergris because it highlights very little else.

GIT and Live Jazz have a similar drydown, I'm assuming it's the ambergris. Either way, both dry down beautifully.
