    Nombre Noir
    by Shiseido

Serge Lutens’s first fragrance for Shiseido.

“The fragrance itself was, and still is, a radical surprise.
A perfume, like the timbre of a voice, can say something quite independent
of the words actually spoken. What Nombre Noir said was 'flower'. But the way it said it
was an epiphany. The flower at the core of Nombre Noir was halfway between a rose and a violet,
but without a trace of the sweetness of either, set instead against an austere, almost
saintly background of cigar-box cedar notes. At the same time, it wasn't dry, and seemed to be
glistening with a liquid freshness that made its deep colors glow like a stained-glass window

The voice of Nombre Noir was that of a child older than its years, at once fresh, husky, modulated
and faintly capricious. There was a knowing naivete about it which made me think of Colette's
writing style in her Claudine books. It brought to mind a purple ink to write love letters with,
and that wonderful French word farouche, which can mean either shy or fierce or a bit of both.”

    - Luca Turin, The Secret of Scent
Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, and sorry I could not travel both and be one traveler, long I stood and looked down one as far as I could to where it bent in the undergrowth; Then took the other, as just as fair, ...... I shall be telling this with a sigh somewhere ages and ages hence: Two roads diverged in a wood, and I -- I took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference. - Robert Frost

    Lagerfeld
    Photo
    (1990)
    Floral Spicy

    ------------------
Top Notes: Aldehydes, Bergamot, Galbanum, Lavender, Lemon, Mandarin
Middle Notes: Carnation, Coriander, Cyclamen, Honey, Jasmine, Rose, Thyme
Base Notes: Amber, Benzoin, Cedar, Guaiac Wood, Moss, Musk, Patchouli, Sandalwood, Tonka Bean
    ------------------

A good near-fougère which is clean and fresh without being too soapy. The top notes are quite vivid, fresh, and striking. They lead into a floral-aromatic heart, and the scent then resolves into a mossy, musky and very slightly powdery drydown. I like this one, even if it does resemble a few others, because it is extremely well done. The construction is very careful and balanced; it is complex and shows a superior development. The longevity is moderate, but it does have a decent sillage until it winds down. You can be a little more liberal in application with this if you want it to last longer. A good, solid scent with potential for classic status someday.

Test driving Quarry's sample of Rochas Byzance...a curious, fruity Oriental. Votes aren't in yet.... Knocks you right off your feet on first spritz but is developing into a woodsy, berried drydown.
