Default Holy f..., I found Loewe para hombre

I just found an unused, packed bottle of Loewe para hombre, the Ur-version of Loewe pour homme on ebay. At the price of a regular perfume, what could I do but buy it. Even the current version of Loewe pour homme is, IMO, a fantastic scent. I have not tried the older version(s?) of the "pour homme" era, but this is going straight "ad fontes". I am seriously enthused.

Loewe esencia is my secret weapon outside Spain, not many people has it. I like both very much and I can tell you that both have been reformulated, I am sure of it. Loewe esencia and para hombre were very popular during the 90´s and very easy to tell it was reformulated. Esencia was the fragrance with the biggest sillage I have ever encountered , thermonuclear power, 1,2,3 days and Esencia was still "tattooed" to my cloths.

Loewe para Hombre is to me, almost a "textbook example" about how an tastefully discreet and understated conservative fragrance should be. Non-generic, manly as opposed to teeny, yet sooo immensely distinguished and sophisticated, long-lasting without being obstructive, complex and unpredictable without being convoluted- I wonder why so many fragrance lovers are still unaware of this treat and its immense potential, all this also at a very advantageous price (since most websites or regular retail stores selling it do so at a great value for money-ratio).

Loewe brought out a limited edition Loewe para hombre Edicion Original, supposedly the original 1974 formulation, in 2007 (at 140 euros/bottle, but it's long disappeared). The bottle I bought is a vintage, i.e. pre-1978, which means it will certainly contain real sandalwood oil and generous pre-IFRAcrocy oakmoss levels, etc. . Hope the juice will be fully intact.

Holy f..., indeed. This has been one of my holy grails for a long time now. Excellent luck my friend, and it couldn't have happened to a nicer connoisseur.

Some other pertinent dates and facts:

Loewe para Hombre was reformulated into Loewe Pour Homme in or around 1992 I believe. The reformulation is excellent and much better than most junk (niche and designer) released in the last 20 years.

It was again reformulated, recently, in the last few years, and I just found out, literally the other day, that the most current reformulation is an unregenerate abomination. I started a 5.1 oz/150ml bottle of the latest reformulation because my old bottle had just finished, and I couldn't believe my nose. It's really really really bad. You can tell the new formulation by the change in the bottles. At least in the 5.1 oz/150 ml bottles, the newer bottle is taller, more elongated, while the previous bottle is shorter and squatter.

Of course, all this makes your bottle even more precious. Again, sincere congratulations.

Congrats on your find! They have indeed reformulated Para Hombre, the new version seems very diluted to me, nowhere in the same class as the original IMO. Please post back with your thoughts!

In Spain Loewe ( and Adolfo Dominguez ) perfumes are pretty much available in every perfumeshop around the corner. I also like Essencia from Loewe, very 80´s chypre.

    the_good_life,

I strongly suspect that the "intermediary version of pour homme" is in fact the lastest reformulation packaging. I've never seen it before.

The "latest version of pour homme," is, I believe, simply an updating of the "pour homme vintage" packaging you have listed and the same formulation as the "pour homme vintage." I could be wrong, and I would be very happy to be corrected.

Scentemental, what do the box and bottle of your most recent version look like?

I own two bottles of Loewe Pour Homme, one "vintage" version and one "latest version" according to Tom's links and comments. I have never seen the "intermediary" version, either.

After a quick comparison of my two bottles I'm not sure about the differences. After one sniff of each I think the "vintage" version is stronger and more pungent, but after another sniff I think they smell nearly identical. If I had to commit either way I'd say that the "vintage" version has more stuffing than the "latest" version. But I need to devote more time to this to be sure.

I had the more recent version of Loewe Pour Homme but I really did not think of it anything special, it was a very lemony fragrance and I already have too many of those (habit rouge vintage edc, the edp, eau suavage, GFT, etc) so I sold it
maybe I might go for the vintage one day

I've compared my two bottles of Loewe Pour Homme several more times over the past week and have come to a conclusion about them.

Using Tom's links above here are the two bottles that I'm talking about:

    http://www.museudelperfum.net/?q=es/...sulta&id=24341

    http://www.fragrantica.com/perfume/L...omme-6295.html

I now believe that these two fragrances are the same, or are close enough to each other that the differences are negligible. As scentemental has proposed, I think that these two products represent different packaging of the same scent.

I also visited a brand new perfume shop which only carries new stock. They had boxes of both Loewe Pour Homme and Esencia which looked like the box displayed here:

    http://www.yatego.com/base/p,4ab8d5c...ewe-pour-homme

I think that this is the latest packaging, not an intermediary packaging as suggested by t_g_l. Having done the sniff test and seen this other packaging, I agree with Tom's rough chronology of the packaging, but would switch the "intermediary version" with the "latest version."

BTW, Tom, have you sampled your new prize yet? Any comments on it?

    noggs,

Thanks for confirming what I suspected was the case.

Let me repeat again that the most recent formulation (in the new packaging) is an abomination. Any one who is trying Loewe Pour Homme for the first time should try it in its previous formulation (nogg's "intermediary version" packaging).

Thanks Scentemental! Any differences in the bottle itself that you know of? I have a tester, and the bottle in both pictures look the same.

Thanks for the clarification. It confused me that the Loewe logo seems to be missing on the new boxes, as their website is still built around it. I have received my vintage bottle. In general it appears much more rugged and less jovial than the newer version (the "intermediate") I have. The essential oils jump in your face - bergamot, rosemary, clary sage - strong vintage style herbacity. My nose is still compromised by a cold, however, so this hasn't gotten a full wear yet. I can picture it on a dark haired, mucho macho Spaniard, though .

First of all I have no Loewe fragrance in my collection yet, so that had to change obviously and I thought why not start with this vintage first edition? Thanks to Tom for the information, it seems there are more bottles available from this eBay seller! Now, today I have received my bottle as well, it's a 60ml splash bottle that looks quite 1980 or so. This eBay seller has specialised in exactly that and a beautiful buyer experience has just found it's way to my desk. This bottle has a marvellous leather top, that is put into the cap. The fragrance I have just decanted into an 8ml atomizer and the great results on my left hand are speaking words of wisdom from the 80's (not a bad thing at all). This is top notch if I may say so and Ken_Russell's post is spot on:

Loewe para Hombre is to me, almost a "textbook example" about how an tastefully discreet and understated conservative fragrance should be. Non-generic, manly as opposed to teeny, yet sooo immensely distinguished and sophisticated, long-lasting without being obstructive, complex and unpredictable without being convoluted- I wonder why so many fragrance lovers are still unaware of this treat and its immense potential, all this also at a very advantageous price (since most websites or regular retail stores selling it do so at a great value for money-ratio).
The directory tells us that it was first released 1978. I have found this on the bottom of the box:

"Fabricado por: N° de Registro 28/78"
If they write their production date on their boxes the same way as car tire brands do, it would definitely mean "week 28 of 1978".

Nice pics dr.creed! My splash bottle of the vintage Para Hombre arrived yesterday . This is an example of when doing a blind buy (which this was ) can be justified IMO. It seemed exactly like the type of scent I've been on the lookout for.

I dabbed some on a tissue and left it on my night table as both wrists were occupied with other essential oils (which also arrived yesterday). The scent was still going strong in the morning. I think its a 'keeper' - no doubt about it being a 'masculine' - but, as Ken_Russel writes, it is "distinguished and sophisticated". Thanks T_G_L and the rest of you for good (and convincing) reviews! This is my first Loewe.

I agree with others - the magic must be in the vintage/intermediary edition because the one I picked up is lame with a capital L. I also bought a fresh Givenchy Gentleman bottle and still find it quite wearable and attractive, even though it has lost its resinous spicy-warm animalic richness. Infact, the latest formulation is more versatile while retaining enough of the originals distinctive accords and the quality of materials is still good.
