Please see the "sticky" in both the men's and women's forums. In the end, the conclusion will be the same: what is one person's ambrosia is only fit for the other's trashcan.

Only *you* can come to a decision about your personal use of fragrances. Each person will have his own reasons for wearing what, why and where, or for whom, including yourself.

As for me, personally, I *don't* wear scent for my husband. Sometimes, I will wear something he likes, otherwise, he has to put up with my closet full of unusual niche scents full of flowers, leather, tobacco, spices and fruits, and foreign, exotic names!

I believe most men are quite fond of vanilla, however I don't really like gourmands at all either (on myself, on my wife, candles, etc.). What categories of fragrances does he wear himself? I like a lot of aquatics/aromatics/fresh fragrances for myself, and also tend to like them on my wife. Out of everything she's tried on, my favorite (oddly enough) is still 8 by Abercrombie.

She does like the gourmands on herself though, and even though they do nothing for me, it doesn't bother me when she wears them (I tolerate them). Wearing fragrances should be for your own personal enjoyment first, and for your significant other (or potential Significant Other )second.

Well that doesn't help much. Hmmm, soap and water....try Mugler Cologne. I'm kidding a bit - it's a very soapy scent. But seriously it is beautiful, unisex, and you might both like it.

My girlfriend is anti-gourmand and, for the most part, anti-oriental. She likes spicy florals (24 Frauborg, Coco, Tresor) and almost anything by Jean Claude Elena. I do not hesitate suggesting the Hermes Jarden series. They're fresh and clean enough to appeal to him (assuming his occupation influences his tastes) and smell lovely on a woman.

If you wish to investigate fragrances that may appeal to you both then why not do some sampling with him? Not every guy likes to go shopping but if you're passionate about fragrance maybe it will rub off on him?

Even if he doesn't like perfume; that doesn't mean i will stop wearing them...lol. I currently wear alot of different fragrances...mostly woody, vanilla, sandlewood! Sometimes i will wear soft floral in summertime with citrus notes. I have to really smell it to know! I was testing some the other day and i did like Gucci Envy...maybe he would like that! What does the abercrombie 8 smell like?

8 is probably not for everyone. It's very youthful (what you'd expect from Abercrombie), but it fits her personality. It's slightly floral, and a lot aromatic/fresh. Something along the same lines but a little more classy is Bvlgari Omnia Crystalline. I got her that one too, but she doesn't like it as good.

From a guy's viewpoint, I significantly like Dior J'Adore, Guerlain Insolence and Worth Je Reviens on a lady

I'd suggest buying some samples for him to try. You can purchase niche samples at:

    www.luckyscent.com

I've also bought a lot of samples at:

    www.beautyencounter.com

If nothing else it'll help you pinpoint what type of fragrance he likes. You can always swap or sell the samples he didn't enjoy.

BTW, cool name, you must be a big fan of WDW.

Mr Bonkers' aversion to all perfumes except - by some strange fluke - SJP Lovely, is a recurring lament of mine in my blog. And Lovely he merely tolerates. The idea of wearing scent "for" him is never going to happen, sadly...

Narciso Rodriguez for Her EDP is a deeper take on SJP Lovely, and seems to last longer on me.

What about some of the "clean" scents like Clinique's Happy or Estee Lauder's Pleasures?

Lanvin's new Rumeur is similar to Lovely, if you want to try something else in the same vein.

Does he like rose scents? There are some nice roses out there, such as Crabtree and Evelyn's Evelyn Rose, or Annick Goutal's Ce Soir Ou Jamais or Goutal's Rose Absolue.

Some great suggestions above, too. Hope you can find something agreeable to you both.

How about a more spicy vanilla or benzoin. I can't stand the standard US vanilla scents (often mixed with coconut or some floral), but when it is offset with exotic spices the experience is very different.

Try a rum/liquor note over vanilla combo with:

    Guerlain Spiritueuse Double Vanille
    L'Artisan Parfumeur Havana Vanille
By Kilian A Taste of Heaven

All feature a vanilla which is not too sweet and tempered by some liquor-like notes. Men usually like these.

My boyfriend is heavily against anything what smells strong. He seems to be ok with fragrances that you can only detect from close-by. The strength of the smell seems to be a much more decisive factor than the scent itself. E.g., he disapproves of Vivienne Westwood Budoir, Boucheron Trouble, Balmain Balmya, Guerlain L'Heure Bleu, all on the ground that they are strong/sharp.

He always compliments me on Cacharel Noa, he also complimented me on Serge Lutens Sa Majeste La Rose, Davidoff Echo, he loved Salvador Dali Daliflor (unfortunatelly I really don't like the latter two) and to my surprise he likes Alexander McQueen's Kingdom.

But he always likes the most if I don't wear anything.

    Well, I don't like it... :-)
I have only tried to new, re-formulated version. It's just boring and not even pleasant. Some faint flowers mixed together resulting in a composition lacking any character.

    From a guy's perspective, that's a given, really. Hehe..

The boyfriend says he hates perfume (though he understands and appreciates the art and science of scent)... and loves the natural woman smell. I make a point of removing perfumes from the environment when he visits. If he were to become a permanent installation (:-) he would have to tolerate my daily workplace perfume regimen (which is whatever pleases me on that day) but I would customarily shower off the scent when I got home.

I admit I would love to try the Civet/Lavender combo on the bed but not on me.

Hmm. Perhaps if it were a coal-smoke basenoted scent he'd be more amenable. Or... perhaps... (grins)...Eau dePotteries. (Coke, diesel, ozone, and...) ... I feel your frustration.

But it is true that our attraction to our mates is among other things scent-based, so you're both bound to find one anothers' natural scent pleasant.

I don't agree. I think you should test J'adore. I might work very well. I think it's a blend of flowers, rather warm and I also sometimes like the fruity opening. There's no vanilla if you want to avoid that.

Or Aqcuadi Parma Iris Nobile perhaps wich is a light, gentle fragrance?

Another thought is to test parfum because parfums stays nearer to the skin than eau de parfums and eau de toilette.
