Default unassuming, non assaulting, but lovely fragrances for men..???

    What shall I look for?

I would like to buy some really nice, but non scary aftershaves for the middle of the road type of masculine guy. No overtly feminine scents or over smelly trailers.

I would love some suggestions for younger fellows just beginning with scents and for an average middle age bloke who doesn't normally wear any perfumes.

Can I put this to the board here as I'm not so familiar with the chaps stuff?

    First off, welcome to Basenotes!

For the older gent, I would try:
    Arpege' PH
    Terre d"Hermes
    L'Instant de Guerlain PH

    Younger:
    Lucky no. 6
    Lacoste red (style in play)
CO Bigelow (any of the barber series)

    Dear mumsy,

welcome to the board! Firstly I would recommend something clean, soapy. Although L'Instant is a great scent, and so is Terre d'Hermes, nevertheless these can be too much for an innocent scent-virgin I'd rather recommend Thierry Mugler Cologne and Prada Infusion d'Homme. Though -as all scents- these do divide the community, but the generally accepted opinion is, that these belong to the soapy-clean genre.

Dior Bois D'Argent, although its quite hard to find and expensive. But its a great fragrance that suits your criteria.

I recommend Rive Gauche Pour Homme by Yves Saint Laurent. A safe buy.

Chanel Pour Monsieur is refined and discrete. It also smells great.

I think it will be fun smelling some manly stuff. I'm only good on girly whiffs. How do the strengths work in man pongs?
Is it EDT then aftershave then cologne?

Mumsy, there's also one just called "Cologne" by Thierry Mugler. It's thought of as clean and traditional. It's just straight up Thierry Mugler Cologne.

For the middle-aged gent I'd say go smell traditional classics like Guerlain's Vetiver, Guerlain's Habit Rouge, Chanel's Pour Monsieur, Chanel's Antaeus, Chanel's Platinum Egoiste, or any of the four men's scents by Caron: Pour un Homme, Yatagan, Third Man (3ieme Homme), or L'Anarchiste.

In fact the last one there, L'Anarchiste might work well for the young gent. Also Chanel's Allure Homme, Allure Homme Sport, Allure Homme Sport Blanche, or whatever all those Allure Homme byproduct scents are named; can't remember all of them.

Thierry Mugler's Cologne is a good one for either gent, and will be a good introduction to things for the young one.

    Hmmmm,

Try Old Spice...Oh...but can be too masculine at times...hmmm...Terre'd Hermes Aftershave is sensual as heck!
Do try it!! and definitely eschews any nuances of Feminism...is quite panache aswell!

    Cheers!

Terre d'Hermes is a good recommendation I guess...but I think Dior Homme would be better.
If fragrance has a gender, so does all art.

    Mumsy,

For the middle-aged bloke: Terre d'Hermes; or Vetiver by Guerlain.

For the young lad: Dirty English by Juicy Couture; or 1 Million by Paco Rabanne.

That is interesting that many of you are recommending the Guerlain vetiver, because I was trying a fragrance mix of bergamot, sweet orange and vetiver as a female fragrance accord and despite the harsh beginnings, am noticing how much of a masculine smell it is developing into.

Fabulous input everyone. Thanks a billion, as I had no idea where to start.

I also thought of Dirty English by Juicy Couture when I read his criteria.

Cartier Pasha is a very good middle-of-the-road scent for middle-age guys. For the younger guy, try Kenneth Cole Reaction.

In theory, aftershave < cologne/EdC < EdT < EdP < perfume oils and attars. EdP isn't at all common for men, although some EdTs may be as strong as a lady's EdP and Habit Rouge EdC can be as strong and long-lasting as many EdTs I've tried. In the end, how strong it gets and how long it lasts depends on the formulation and who's wearing it.

One thing that might help your shopping is to sneak a good look (sniff) at the toiletries that each guy is actually using, whether he's supposed to or not (Nivea cold cream simply rocks for soothing razor burn) Neither guy is going to be happy with a fragrance that clashes with his usual deodorant or shampoo. On the other hand, something that shares one or more notes with the products he uses might end up being worn.

+1, except that I recall enjoying it in my late 20's. Pasha is pretty versatile and definitely a cut above 99% of designer crap.

The man would like the manly simplicity of Vetiver de Puig. It's a simple and beautiful barbershop vetiver that sells for 20 bucks on eBay. (The ashtray in Guerlain Vetiver may put him off).

The boy will like the citrus in L'eau d'Issey.

These are all fabulous suggestions. One of the criteria may well end up being the price I can get them for. I am doing a stand for the local church fair and putting these things on as decants with the profits going to the church just for a bit of fun. I will have some stuck in the mud older types mostly, along with a whole range of ages, then young lads who may never have used anything except their dads stuff. A new education in pongs shall be coming to them if I get the shopping right. So thanks folks. I have a super shopping list here.

AS I read mumsy's original request, he wants something pretty safe...

I'm making an assumption that though he's calling for AS, he really just means fragrances.
I don't know if any/all of these are available in AS strength.

    So I'd say:

    Terre D"Hermes
    Guerlain Vetiver
Rive Gauche Pour Homme (maybe, this one is surprisingly strong)
    Habit Rouge
    Mugler Cologne
    Gendarme, Gendarme V, Gendarme 20
Chanel Pour Monsieur (original or concentree)

    Younger men

    Dior Homme
    Rochas Man
    Kouros
    Bvlgari Black
    L'eau d'Issey
