Default Less = More, More = Less & More = More, Less = Less

OK, I'm pretty sure I'm reprising an old thread, but here goes. Some frags overpower and change for the worse when overapplied but are great when used in small quantities. Conversely, there are some frags that you need to apply in large quantities or else they're olfactorily invisible, less = less.

More = Less, Less = More: Polo, Yatagan (i assume), Gucci pour homme

Less = Less (More = More): Hermes Eau d'Orange Verte (so I'm told), my new favorite, Roget & Gallet Jean Marie Farina Extra Vieielle.

What others fit both these categories?

Less = More: No. 88 ( becomes soapy ), Vintage Rose ( harsh ), Poison ( oddly, smells blander when overapplied - yet all the more overpowering ).

Less = Less: L'Eau Trois ( the drydown simply isn't there if lightly applied )

As good as they smell, they just need reapplication after a few hours. That's just how they are.

When overapplied, Cadjmere is less sweet and has more sandalwood. In my book, this is an improvement. (Not that I don't love Cadjmere at any application level.)

D&G The One for Men is so much better when overapplied and too weak and listless with just a few sprays.

Bijan for Men is the worst frag I've ever experienced unless just a light misting to the chest or wrists, then it is among the best spice frags ever.

Here's another variation on this theme: if I wear Burberry London for men very rarely, I really like it. If I wear it too often, I find it much less compelling.

I have this with most of my favorites. If I start to think "Hmm... This is getting a little mundane." I forget about it for about a month at least.

less = more AND more = less
    A*Men
    Angel
Lutens Cedre. Over two sprays and it's unbearable.
    Grey Flannel. For obvious reasons.
Guerlain Vetiver. While the character does not change on my skin, the volume increases exponentially with each spray. Less is definitely more enjoyable.

    Eau d'Orange Verte, definitely
Terre d'Hermes, though i'm sure many would disagree.
    Eau Sauvage
    M7 Fresh

    Guerlain Homme

Bvlgari Aqua is definitely my 'less is more,' 3-4 sprays it stays a really nice, fresh aquatic, any more and it can become a peppery, cheap smelling mess.

Less is more: Rive Gauche. A few sprays on the chest and you're good. More than that and it gets really bitter and sour on me.

My absolute number 1 less=more is SL Borneo 1834. ONE SPRAY ONLY. Any more and it's borderline disgusting.

I have rediscovered Acqua di Gio in the last few days, and also discovered that it is a less=more frag for me. I hadn't worn it in a long time, but this past weekend spritzed a couple on for a lazy Saturday around the house. The sprayer on my little 1oz bottle doesn't dispense a lot per spray (or so I thought), so I was spraying 4-5 times per application.

Well Saturday I only did 2, and I really love the way I smelled. It didn't go "dryer sheet" on me as much as if I spray more, and I definitely smelled less like some High School punk. I'm wearing it like that again today, and remembering why I liked it (though I didn't want to) when I first tested it.

AdG projected so much, I couldn't even get it down low enough of an app to avoid it's cloyingness. I had to trade it. Obsession and Jaipur homme I would also put in the less = more category.

    I only have two -

Less=more - VC&A Pour Homme. VERY easy to over apply, like literally one spray too much can be WAY too much and the stuff is not only unpleasant and unwelcome, but refuses to go away within 24 hours. Sprayed sparingly and sensibly, however, and it's a masterpiece.

Less=less (and more=less with this one) - Molton Brown Black Pepper. No matter how much or how little I spray of this stuff, it just disappears in the space of two hours. It's like a REALLY expensive and slightly longer lasting 4711. With a different smell, obviously.

    Less = More
Opium PH (I smell old really quickly if I spray more than 2.5 times...otherwise I smell like a distinguished gentleman)
Kenzo PH (Mist 2-3 over neck/chest area = superb!)
F Pour Homme Black by SF (enticing and exquisite if not overapplied)
    Jazz Prestige
    D&G PH
    Animale Animale
    Most Bvlgari fragrances

    More = More
