About Le Mâle: It is necessary to know the enemy... (OK, removing tongue from cheek now).

It is very powdery, and even more so in the drydown, and it strikes me that young men like this scent because it has a certain aura of naïveté. Is it bland? Well, yes, but the ingredients are good quality, and it is fairly well balanced among fresh, spicy, and oriental notes. I must say, the development is very slight, and for the life of me, I can't figure from the pyramid where all that powder is coming from. I might wear this on an intensely sunny day to the State Fair while eating cotton candy (candy floss to you Brits, or fairy floss to the Oz... wink, wink, nudge, nudge), but it might very easily make my teeth hurt. I'll try it someday and see if it takes years off my life. (Damn! My tongue keeps slipping into my cheek!)

    Vetiver Extreme by Guerlain

I hated this, the first time I smelled it. But, now that I am a certified Vetiver Fan Club member, I am enjoying this much more.

I see where JP Guerlain was going with this one - clearly he was aiming for those Givenchy Vetiver aficionados. No tobacco, a clean watery note and gobs of vetiver with that signature iodine-rich tanginess to it.

Today I bought my first Serge Lutens. I've tried quite a few from this line and whilst I aknowledge that they are quality scents I haven't been wowed by any, that's until I tried....

Today, by mail from the perfumer

    Soivohle'
    Oud Lacquer
    (2009)
    Liz Zorn
    Spicy Oriental
    ------------------
Top Note: Linden Flower, Anise, Cèpes, Orange, Petitgrain
Middle Notes: Orange Blossom, Rose, Agalaia, Champaca,Orris Root, Cinnamon, Clove
Base Notes: Cocoa Absolute, Honey, Woody Notes, Tolu Balsam, Styrax, Patchouli, Benzoin, Tonka Bean, Vanilla, Angelica Root Oil
    ------------------
The first and most noticeable note is the spice, cinnamon and clove, and this continues for quite awhile. Eventually, some floral notes begin to emerge, and the angelica root and anise start to peek around a far corner. The scent is quite strong and distinct, but without an offensive sillage. After a while longer, I may be able to report on the rest of the notes. I've only had it on for about an hour, and the tiniest little bit has proved quite powerful.

Scored a vintage bottle (70's) of Guerlain's Mitsouko EDC. The round bottle with the spire on top. I'm stoked to get it. Can't wait. Never smelled Mitsouko in any form so it's blind, but I figure it's one of those "must tries," right?

My wife got her annual bonus today and it was FAR more than we were expecting given the financial climate of the last year and the difficulties her company went through last autumn. And, probably, it's far more than it has any right to be. But anyway, after she bought a new HD video camera she's been after for ages and put some away for savings, she said to me "check your Paypal account" - yep, she even gave some to me to have a play with, god love her!

So I've bought (but they've not yet turned up):
    Pierre Cardin Pour Monsieur
Aramis JHL (from the Gentlemen's Collection)
    Aramis Cool Blend
    Rance Francois Charles
    Rance Le Vainqueur

Can't wait to try the new Cool Blend - Aramis always do knock-out aquatics. Also the two Rances will be my first proper brand new and unused niches.

I'm knocking new acquisitions on the head for a while after this lot cos I'm running thin on room!

I finally broke down and bought a boatload of Amouage samples. Perhaps not worthy of their own 'Today I bought' post, but they were expensive enough and I'm excited to try them finally. My only previous experience with Amouage was a couple hasty sniffs on paper when I was on vacation this past summer. I only tried a couple and they sparked my interest, but I didn't have time to devote to them there at the store that day. Let the fun begin!

    At Jacqueline in San Francisco

    Amouage
    Jubilation XXV
    (2007)
    Bertrand Duchaufour
    Oriental Fougère
    ------------------
Top Notes: Frankincense, Labdanum, Coriander, Davana, Blackberry, Orange
Middle Notes: Guaiac Wood, Rose, Honey, Bay Laurel, Orchid, Cinnamon, Clove, Celery Seed
Base Notes: Opopanax, Patchouli, Myrrh, Musk, Moss, Atlas Cedar, Ambergris, Oud, Immortelle
    ------------------
A blend of spice, resins and balsams, a whiff of florals, and woods. Call this a fougère because it contains too diverse a group of elements to fit into any other genre. Call it an oriental because they are there at every level: frankincense and labdanum in the top; guaiac wood and honey in the heart; opopanax, myrrh, ambergris and oud in the base. Duchaufour has made an oriental fantasy here. A Frank wandering in the mysterious east, bearing a cloud of scent wafting in the air of the spice and resins souk; he has woven a magic carpet fit for a flight of fancy.

and at Neimans, a replacement bottle of

    Creed
    Baie de Genièvre
    (1982)
    Woody Oriental
    ------------------
    Top Notes: Bergamot, Cinnamon Leaves
    Middle Notes: Clove, Juniper Berry
    Base Notes: Vetiver, Ambergris
    ------------------
A magnificent essence, blending dry juniper berries and barely sweet, slightly green cinnamon leaves. The vetiver base smooths and gently marries the two. You could wear this to work or to a daytime affair and be very elegant. If you wore it in the evening, you would be the height of sophistication, yet in a perfectly unassuming way. Anytime you wear it, you must take on an air of entirely natural self-assurance, an almost unspeakable sense of comfort in your own skin. Ah, how deeply satisfying to wear this!
