    Default Best Designer House

For me, it's Yves Saint Laurent.

Kouros, Body Kouros, Rive Gauche, L'Homme, La Nuit, M7.

Six solid unique innovative, and quality releases, at very reasonable prices.

I wouldn't classify Guerlain as a "designer" house, therefore out of your list, it has to be Chanel. So many classics:

    Sycomore
    Bois des Iles
    Cuir de Russie
    No.5
    No.22
    Coromandel
    Egoiste
    Antaeus

Exactly, they are a perfume house. The others are designers of clothes, bags, shoes, jewellery etc. hence the label 'designer' house I assume.

Agree completely. Not sure why there is a fascination in classifying what type of house it is. It's not like the same people who are developing the fragrances are creating the handbags and jeans anyway.

Yeah, Guerlain is not "designer" by any measure. But, as dougczar and BurgundyMarsh point out, this is not a useful classification for perfumes anyway. Are Hummer and Ferrari designer houses? They design cars...

A better word is maybe mass-market, mainstream, or commercial. I think Raymond Burr draws the line as being between "commercial" and "niche" - and any brand may have products on both sides. Chanel and the Exclusifs ... Dior, Hermes, Guerlain, Armani, Tom Ford - they all do it too.

Back on point - I think the best mainstream brand is Guerlain: Imperiale, Jicky, Shalimar, Mouchoir de Monsieur, Mitsouko, Apres L'Ondee, Vol De Nuit, L'Heure Bleue, Vetiver, Habit Rouge, Derby (can I count this one?), Heritage ... OK, it's a bit thin on the masculines, but an unbeatable line-up overall.

In the strictest sense of encapsulating all that is mainstream - but doing it well - it has to be Armani. AdG, a huge trend setter. Code - huge trend setter. Attitude is excellent - a modernized take on Zino. Armani Eau PH - a classic. Code for Women - huge trend setter. Acqua di Gioa for women is excellent as well.

I just feel that Armani scents encapsulate and best represent the mainstream market. They are always extremely polished and balanced, and even if they're safe, they're damn good scents.

Errrr, because Chanel is a a designer house and Guerlain is primarily and historically a perfume house.

Great idea for a poll by the way!!

For me it had to be between the 'main' highstreet favourites: Chanel, Dior, Guerlain, Hermes.

I voted for Hermes as it's recent creations have really set it apart (TdH, Une Jardin series). That said, I think Chanel is a close contender as it has made some very unique fragrances over the years that have stood the test of time. Sycomore or No. 5 anyone?

I have liked Dior for some time (Eau Sauvage) but have never gotten seriously into it. But I wouldn't say I found them as exciting as others have said here. Still, though, a respectable third place for me.

As for the rest, well I can't say anything particularly good about them. Guerlain is probably worthy of a mention for it's Vetiver creation, which at the time was great, but to me this house is quite dated.

I don't classify Guerlain as designer. That said I'd go for Chanel, Yves Saint Laurent and, eventually, Dior. Givenchy's former catalogue was pretty darned solid as well.

I thought "designer" meant that the company/brand name primarily designed other products (ie clothing, watches/jewelry, purses, etc.) or product lines, and the perfume/cologne is simply another product line for them? If that rings, true, I'd probably have to give my vote to Chanel, as I don't think several of the others have different product lines other than their perfumes & colognes.

Thierry Mugler b/c of the game changer known as A*Men along with it's flankers Pure Malt and Pure Havane. Did any of the other designers have a fragrance so popular that they had a subforum like PM did? I didn't think so.

mugler and dior are good, but the problem which keeps them from being #1 in my eyes is that they rely on flankers.

dior is known for two fragrances, dior homme and fahrenheit. if you don't like them, chances are you probably won't like the flankers. as with mugler, all of their fragrances are based on the original A Men. if you don't like a men, then most of the others probably won't work out for you.

what i like about chanel and ysl is that they don't rely on 1-2 fragrances to base their entire library on. they have a wide variety of completely different scents.
