    Smile Today I bought.....March 2010

Today, I bought......nothing. But I figured it might be my turn to start a few threads around this joint. So, what did you buy today?

I bought three to try. Bearing in mind I turn most things to their muskier side.

Eau de Vie Virgin - seems nice, with a hint of citrus? then something spicy? then a bit carnationy and floral, then last, a light and creamy sandalwood, as far as my inexperienced nose tells me. Didn't last long, and it's a bit mixed at the offset but settles down to a gentle thing.

Celine for men - seemed fresh, clean and nice with the tiny bit I put on, but haven't tried it yet properly.

Blond by Versace - This is safely top of the worst smells I have ever had the 'pleasure' of trying. Firstly it nearly made me sick and then I dutifully kept it on all morning till 1ish to see if it could improve. I couldn't take any more of it past 1pm and had to scrub it off. My skin must have bought out the worst notes in this, because I would have been so sure someone like Versace couldn't have made something to smell like this did on me on purpose. It smelt like the old water in a vase that you have left the flowers in for too long. An old rotten bulb smell along the lines of tuberose.

I love smelling new smells.... even when you get a surprise like that. It really makes you appreciate the beautiful ones all the more.

I ordered a tester bottle of Ivoire, since my present bottle is about to
run out. I also bought a miniature vintage bottle of Ivoire on Ebay. Now I can
relax in the knowledge that I have enough to last me quite a while!

I have loads of samples to get through and want to concentrate on those before I make
any more purchases. I know what you mean about Blond by Versace. I made the
mistake of ordering a bottle, before I really knew which scent types I liked. It's
fairly nauseous -inducing on my skin too!! I can't imagine who it would suit.

    Vetiver Extreme by Guerlain

I hated this, the first time I smelled it. But, now that I am a certified Vetiver Fan Club member, I am enjoying this much more.

I see where JP Guerlain was going with this one - clearly he was aiming for those Givenchy Vetiver aficionados. No tobacco, a clean watery note and gobs of vetiver with that signature iodine-rich tanginess to it.

My friend who was with me when I tried the Blond Versace was hooting with laughter, and said it must have been developed by one of the male Versace family to apply to their own teenage daughters of the family in order to keep would-be boyfriends from getting too close.....and it certainly would.

Estee Lauder's classic Azuree (I can't believe that the first time I tried this, I thought it smelled like beef broth and celery!). What a completely wearable leather scent. Not charry like Cabochard, but still butch and a little bitter. Completely gorgeous.

Laura Mercier's Marron Glace. I was there to sniff the Vanille, but was won over by this one. It's a light-wearing, comfort gourmand. Sweet, but without that garish ethyl maltol that seems to be in every other sweet scent I try. It's got a fatty/milky almond sweetness, and it's gorgeous and fuzzy-warm. I wish I had this earlier this winter.

(and then I scored a deluxe sample of Bronze Goddess)

I'm waiting for Storer's Monk in the mail from another bner too, but since it's not here...it doesn't feel like I own it yet. I can't wait!

A blind buy of a 2.5 oz bottle of Carven's robe d'un soir spelled just like that, with no capital letters, on the label. Little info on it in BN directory. Perfumeintelligence.co.uk states it is a floral aldehyde fragrance introduced in 1947 and D/c date unknown. Relaunched in 1991 and again d/c date unknown. This is a bottle of the re-launch because the label also says "Distributed by Jacqueline Cochran, Inc NYC 10020". No zip codes in 1947.

Testing on my arm and finding it charming thusfar- an old-fashioned, in the nice way.

Well... There is a nicely sharp citrus to the topnotes, but I also get the distinct Guerlinade (similar to the modern Mitsuoko) in the top and middle... I am sure it is sweeter than most I like (but I love this kind of sweetness, lilac isn't mentioned in the pyramid but that's what I'm getting along with all the other lovelies...) the drydown, peppery, and I am getting a nice wave of amber-sweetened moss and leather. (I'm sure more educated noses would detect other notes...) the peppery leather is wonderful. Sold on this one.

And yes, Red Jacket is a suitable name for this scent. (I have a J. Peterman deep red jacket with a stand-up collar - nearly Nehru - and tons of attitude that would be PERFECT to wear with this.)

There is something about this time of year that makes me crazy for Aromatics Elixir - I got some more - a 100 ml bottle to replace the 100 ml bottle I sold last year. *rolls eyes* Why did I sell it ???
I love the mysteriousness of Aromatics Elixir - there is something magical within that perfume that relaxes me and makes me smile. The simple frosted bottle is lovely too. J'adore !

Well. If I were the type to participate in such rituals I would say I had given it up too. Unfortunately, that is not the case, and despite my better instincts I just "invested" in some Chanel Sycomore. Sigh. Love makes one stupid!

I found some Joy Body Lotion for next to nothing so I bought it. I think it smells quite close to the parfum, which is great, but I hate the thought of using any sort of cream on my skin. I'll find some use for it though...

The Guerlain Vetiver arrived today and I'm testing it now. So far, it's Guerlain, for sure, many notes in common with both HR and Mitsuoko. And I couldn't put my finger on the sweet candy-like note but it's orange blossom, I think. Nice combo of spicy, resinous, and sweet without being cloying.

    Rose Absolute
    Voile d'Ambre

There is a sale on their website. Got the Rose Absolute for 50% off the already very reasonable price. $20 for this lovely rose scent is a steal. They continue to put out very nice perfumes at such reasonable prices - worthy of support. Maybe I'll keep buying the anti-aging cream too

Thanks Twolf, I was amazed at my luck.

Used up my little sample of Rousse, so I bought a bottle. Some think it's cinnamon overload but I love it's summery dryness.

Cello, I am an Yves Rocher fan from way back, own many of their scents and I do like their face creams and the new Tradition de Hammam body line-up. The sales are fabulous and when you get to be a regular you get these great one free product coupons from time to time, that's when I go for the bigger ticket scents.

The Kiehl's Original Musk came today... it smells EXACTLY like the musk blend on the book my grandmother gave me when I was a little one.

And tomorrow, the grand finale of my 90 day perfume binge, the Chanel Sycomore should arrive.

(quivering with anticipation and with the full knowledge of what I did to my bank balance!)

Forgot the encore... a 50 ml Chanel Pour Monsieur and a big sample of MKK. (okay... I MUST stop the buys now, for at least the spring and summer.)

I finally tracked down my 2 bottles of So In Love. I thought I was gonna have to straight windmill the UPS driver. He left the box in the leasing office, but failed to leave a note stating so on my door. This perfume is getting harder to find because it's been discontinued. I don't know what I'll do if I can't find it anymore. I love my funky roses.....

I won an auction on Ebay on March 3 for an almost full bottle of "Y" EDT Mist for 15 USD. It arrived today and I could not be more pleased. The box only has one stain on the side, and the bottom still has a price sticker which says "Nordstrom Best, some code numbers and a $5.oo price." Is that even possible that Nordies sold anything at that price even taking inflation into account??

The juice is breathtakingly georgeous. Life is good.

I just ordered a bottle of Elizabeth Taylor Gardenia (never heard of it, but the bottle was so beautiful), plus a mini of EL Pure White Linen (since I don´t quite remember what it smelled like, and the mini was cute) from FragranceX.
With the free shipping and my loyalty reward, I payed almost exactly what a box of Marlboros cost here!

Popped into Marshalls and saw both Tea Rose Perfumer's Workshop and Cabotine de Gres for $10 each and caved.

I like Tea Rose, and a rose may be a rose may be a rose, but this is full on, nose buried in a wet bouquet ROSE. At four ounces I don't know how I will come close to using it all, but I think I found my new rose layering scent and can now just enjoy Cabaret on its own.

Speaking of Parfums de Gres, Cabotine has been recommended a lot as a green floral, and it is, but not what I was looking for. Nevertheless I do like this. It has a synthetic fabric softener thing going on, but it is spritely and fresh and soft and I think I will wear it a lot in the summer. I like it even more as it dries down and smells more natural.

A brand new 50ml Miller Harris Fleur Oriental on ebay for £24.99. This is a blind buy but reviews say very like Shalimar, I should be safe. Anyway never see it cheap in stores.

The Sycomore arrived today! (this may become my signature scent.) Along with samples of No. 5 Eau Premiere EDP and Allure Sensuelle EDP. (they darned well had better add freebies with a pricey FB like Sycomore!) Happy dance time. But... Oh... I'm LOVING the samples. Danger!

(um. Ordered Chanel Pour Monsieur and a large-ish decant of MKK yesterday. Now I PROMISE I'm finished until fall. <oh... we'll see, we'll see...> >

I've been sampling some of the Scents of Time fragrances, and I loved Night Star from the first sniff. I knew it would be pretty from the notes, but I had no idea how very lush this delicate sounding, soft and powdery floral would be. It is over-the-top pretty, tender and ultra-feminine. I had to have it, and I just placed my order (...although I already put it in my Wardrobe - I know it's cheating but I just couldn't wait to see that little bottle in there!)

    from the Basenotes Directory -
    Top Notes - Bergamot, Lavender
Middle Notes - Rose, Violet, Heliotrope, Orris, Lily of the Valley
Base Notes - Sandalwood, Vanilla , Hawthorn Blossom

I ordered some scents from YR today; the new So Elixir (nose Olivier Cresp et al. Is that guy EVERYWHERE; he´s involved in soo many of my fumes...) Also ordered 20 ml each of Vanille Bourbon, Vanilla coconut, Framboise, and Blackberry. Since I love L´Artisan Mure et Musc in all it´s forms, I thought I might try to even improve M et M with an extra dash of Mure, lol.

I´m just getting classier and classier in my preferences...

OT : How can YR be so dirt cheap on these linear fruit sprays; are they just mixing alcohol and fruit juice concentrate together, or what? hmm, hmmm.

Yesterday I was at L'Occitane, buying Eau de Baux shower gel for hubby. I asked for a sample of Labdanum, but they did not have it. The sales lady suggested I purchased a 7.5ml for $10, so I did. It is very nice for $10, but now I really want to try Donna Karan's Labdanum.

I was bad the day before, I found myself at Macy's. I was so excited that they had No. 19, and No. 5 Eau Premiere, and Cristalle Eau Verte. The No. 19 was a deep green colour and did not smell like No. 19 as I know it. Although when I first sampled it I was not crazy about it, Cristalle Eau Verte smelled like Spring, and I can't wait for Spring, so I bought a bottle.

Remember "Living Better Through Chemistry!" ;-) The science of scent is pretty amazing, in what can be isolated/imitated. Retail shops everywhere depend upon scent chemicals for their "atmosphere". Why should perfume be any different?
