Default SotD Friday, 2 March 2012

    Good morning,

It seems my mood is in sync today...

Chergui (vintage - dark brown jus)

There is another reason... it will be a proper spring day today and I am going skating in front of the Vienna Mayor's Hall later in the afternoon (so far it has been too cold to motivate myself). I know the old Chergui has ridiculous longevity and should bear with me until tonight.

    TGIF! Best to all

Haven't had a moment to apply anything yet, think I'll go with Bel Respiro. Seems somehow appropriate!

    Have fun skating, Larimar.

After all the Leap Day laughs that can hardly be topped, our Friday threads are huge here, I especially love how we wear what we want/like/have on hand and try to find a possible and barely visible connection with the theme.

I will do the red juice of Aqaba today, I think.

Daniel, I really really like Amber Pour Homme. I have been tempted to get some. I think that it has a gorgeous old fashioned, easy, elegant, vibe but I know that lots of the guys don't rate it. I put some on a paper spill one day and I didn't want to lose it so I put it in my glasses case. I don't wear them that often so by the next time I opened the case everything was infused with Amber Pour Homme, including whatever material the glasses are made of . It is still there every time I put them on! It is lovely. It doesn't seem to get an awful lot of positive attention. Will you be kind enough to tell me what you think of it?

The idea of your skating in Vienna, Larimar, puts such a smile on my face. Hope you are enjoying that today.

I'm not synching yet. I'm wearing some vintage Mitsouko edc (thanks, Mike! ) this morning. I love the vintage Guerlain colognes. This one is lovely. For some reason with Guerlain classics my choice is either eau de cologne or extrait - although the Vol de Nuit edp at Saks in NOLA was very nice. The stuff in the middle area of the spectrum doesn't usually excite me much. So I'm headed to the gym this morning in my Mitsouko edc. I'll be like you at the gym, Mike, but instead of being a sweaty muscley guy in his boxing gloves smelling of a granny fragrance, I'll actually look like the part, lol! Actually, I'm just wearing one spray between the wrists to keep my huffing sniffer happy.

    Hello everyone!

High 70s and humid isn't really ideal for opulent orientals, so I'm not in sync yet either. I'm going for a run in Molyneux Quartz, and I'll see if anything more ornery strikes my fancy later.

Me: I think today I'll wear Shalimar.......or maybe (mumbling to self, perusing contents of perfume cabinet)
Hubby: (aghast) One must NEVER use the word "or" in the same sentence with "Shalimar" It's Shalimar all the way! Shalimar or nothing at all!

Hence I am in synch today, layering my Shalimar edp with a few dabs of vintage extrait from a gifted sample.
(note the effects on spouse of living with a basenoter...)
"Like a lobster with a pearl in its claw, the beet held the jasmine firmly without crushing or obscuring it. Beet lifted jasmine, the way a bullnecked partner lifts a ballerina, and the pair came on stage on citron's fluty cue. As if jasmine were a collection of beautiful paintings, beet hung it in the galleries of the nose, insured it against fire or theft, threw a party to celebrate it. Citron mailed the invitations." Oh, did *I* send you this? Looks like I unloaded an unwanted sample with you then, my friend!

So, before skating I sort of spontaneously decided to skip lunch and go on a sniff-stroll in downtown. It was VERY productive sniffing. I have had a couple of things in mind for a while...

    1) I wanted to check out the following as possible alternatives for Sous le Vent (you should bear in mind that it is not too unlikely to be gone by next year - my guess. Paris is selling stuff that was produced in 2008/2009... I am just saying...):
    - Eau du Sud (Goutal)
This is certainly not far in its opening accord. I quite like it. It is sort of spicier than Sous le Vent and less 'charming'... well, 'uncharming' is my word for Goutal. I am not fond or not terribly (at best) of her style in perfumery.
    - Futur (Piguet)
This is loud and very artifical smelling. It does not smell bad per se, but I felt it is impossible for me. It's far from Guerlain's aromatic, hesperidic, citric masterpiece.
    - Eau de Guerlain
I think from all Eaux this or Eau de Fleurs de Cedrat are my favorite... however, I'd prefer my Eau to leave me after an hour or so instead of Eau de Guerlain's very generic base. I tend to think Sous le Vent's aromatic-citric accord closes the gap of a traditional Eau in my wardrobe, while it also meets my liking for a modernized chypré. Great to have two in one, eh?
    - Azemour Les Orangers
I do like this. On a paper strip, the opening is very fruity orangey, but not on my skin. I very much like its heart, which plays very nicely as a sort of 'faux chypré'. Unfortunately, the base, which lingers on nicely in principle, is slightly green-sharp, which seems to be mostly synthetic. This is quite a shame as I could have seen myself buying a bottle of this.

In the end, I think there is no substitute for Sous le Vent for me. It has all the qualities that make it unique and outstanding as a very classic Guerlain.

    2) Chanel - quick sniff Eau de Cologne - it's done the Chanel way - not my style! Guess what, the staff recognized me from my last buys and I was *offered* samples of their Exclusives! Wow, I am amazed after my history with them. I got Sycomore and Coromandel. Nice to revisit them again after a while.

    3) Kokorico (JP Gaultier)
I think it is very clever of Gaultier to come up with something totally different compared to their existing line-up. Whether this will prove to be a success - we'll see! It is a dry, woody, slightly smoky patchouli... I was reminded of the woodiness in Amouage masculines. While I don't feel this is a flattering comment for Amouage, it is sort of a kudos to Gaultier. It is well done for 'mainstream crap' heavily advertised at every corner. It is fairly simple and straight-forward, but it is okay. Sniff it!

My bottle is almost gone. Ack!

Lilybelle - I'm sure that you rock that Mitsouko much better than I do. Hugs!
Larimar - have you smelled Philtre d'Amour by Gueralin, to me it shares a lot of DNA with SLV.
I'll most likely be in one of my more 'HUGE' orientals tonight (right now it's sunny & hot), probably Shalimar vintage extrait...layered with the Body Cream and Shower Gel.

Yes, mike, I have a small decant of Philtre d'Amour. It does nothing for me (re-sampled it about a week ago). It's also not really a chypré to me.

I forgot to add in my explanations above that I got to smell Tubereuse Criminelle eventually...
The opening is bold, but absolutely impossible for me (yuk! sweet cough syrup!). After a short while it settles down into a tuberose that has its edges nicely pronounced. Pleasant (after an hour) but a straight-forward tuberose is not for me!

Right now I am wearing NO scent, as I plan to hit Saks later this am. Must get all my sniffing and errands done before lunch, because they are predicting very bad weather from mid-afternoon through tonight. Same front that brought the tornadoes to the Midwest earlier in the week. Will keep an eye out and run to the basement if necessary.

Will report on any finds in Saks, but this isn't Paris, and I don't get to sniff anything too exotic. Larimar, the Sous le Vent sounds wonderful and I have looked for it to no avail. They didn't have it at the Guerlain boutique in Orlando, even.

Okay then, with the run out of the way, I'm can settle into my day with an opulent oriental. I'm now in sync in the remarkably beautiful, softly spicy floriental 8e Jour by Yves Rocher. This is an all-season oriental, and it's actually wonderful in warm weather! Although I do think it's quite opulent and includes some rather dense sorts of notes, it's somehow sheer enough to never be too rich, and it would never dream of being cloying. Or ornery, for that matter ...does it still count?

I can't find any info about the perfumer, but 8e Jour was released in 1993 and has notes of iris, ylang-ylang, rose, jasmine, honey, myrrh, vanilla, cinnamon and sandalwood ...and artistry. I really think this is a little masterpiece. ♥

Is it 'new' juice (from a bell jar) or vintage (from the original columnal shaped bottle)? I own vintage juice and while I agree it is not a full blown chypre because it has none of that moss to bite into, the top and middle notes scream SLV to me.

mike, I received it in a swap and I did not care by then. It wears like an EdT, which would make it 1999 and first launch, but I don't know.

Shalimar. Vintage. Dark, lovely juice. Cuddling with handsome man on couch under old quilt as storms rage outside. He keeps pulling my wrist to his nose and making little cat purr noises. I think I made a good stormy day scent choice. Purrrrrr.

Larimar, your French cheeses sound lovely, the stinkier the better! Enjoy!

    Why, thank you very much!

I'm topping up my Aqaba this evening with EL Azuree, which now seems pretty tame and clean and soapy over Aqaba, but I was actually craving Aromatics Elixir this evening as a top up, which I don't have because I've never been able to make friends with it, but I may change my mind soon. We're allowed to change our minds aren't we?

It's thundering here but not pouring rain, just sort of drizzly. A short while ago I heard the loudest thunder boomer I've ever heard in my entire life. It sounded like a bomb went off, I'm not kidding. The dog and I both jumped about three feet in the air. I'm going to stay inside tonight and watch old Monarch of the Glen episodes.

    TGIF everybody.

    Larimar,

I was curious and googled ice skating in Vienna. The videos I found on YouTube show what look to be 2 large rinks, and upper and lower ones, connected by long, curving skating paths. What a charming set-up and what a beautiful City Hall!

I am feeling a lot better-- my pulled muscle is nearly back to normal.
And I've been scent free today. My mind has traveled down other paths than fragrance.

Hello all - hope you are all looking forward to a great weekend.

It is a bit too humid and warm for a BIG oriental, so I went with

    Shalimar PI

Hope your back returns to 100% soon, 30Roses.

    Congrats also to dear Lilybelle!
