    Spicy Oriental

    ------------------
    Top Notes: Lemon, Mandarin, Blackberry
Middle Notes: Pepper, Angelica, Cardamom, Juniper
    Base Notes: Sandalwood, Cedarwood, Ambergris
    ------------------

A refreshing, masculine, tonic fragrance. It is characterized by spicy and green/herbal notes, with citrus and fruit in the top note and a woody-oriental base. I first encountered this scent a few years ago and took it on a trip to Hawaii with me. At that time, I was very struck by the juniper, angelica and spice notes, which along with the citrus, put me very much in mind of gin and tonic. Ever since that time, I have always associated this scent with the Islands and with the cocktail hour. I think these are pretty good associations for a fragrance, so I can't help but think highly of it.

It's easy for me, since I bathe after midnight and stay up all night on my days off ( in my job, 70% of the time I work all night, and usually get to bed between 0600 and 0930 CST). Even on those days when I have to get to bed before midnight and awaken in the morning, I always chose my SotD before I crash. That explains it for me!

    Continuing small perfumer week.

    Tauer Perfumes Lonestar Memories

Andy Tauer is a man of uncommon talent and as we’ve seen over the years that talent has grown as he has created more excellent fragrances. In 2006 it wasn’t as apparent how good he was going to be. A year earlier he had released Le Maroc pour Elle and L’air du Desert Marocain and both of those fragrances set a high bar for his Tauer Perfumes to emulate going forward. I, and many others, waited to see what his next fragrance would be. The answer to that question was Lonestar Memories. The other question that Lonestar Memories answered was what kind of perfumes would Andy Tauer create going forward. That answer was he wasn’t going to let himself be trapped by previous success and he was going to follow his own muse when it came to creating his perfumes. Lonestar Memories was a radical departure from the oriental style of his first two fragrances.

Lonestar Memories is first and foremost a leather scent and when it comes to leather scents there are many ways to go with them. You can work the smooth side of the strees and make suede accord, smooth and refined or you can work the opposite side of the street and go raw and unrefined. It is the raw and unrefined side of the street that Lonestar Memories travels on. I think that also makes this the most difficult of Andy Tauer’s fragrances to snuggle up to. When a leather scent veers into this kind of feel, I think this is where it sometimes feels like a bridge too far for many, especially those who like their leather on the smooth side. I have come to appreciate the rawer fragrances out there and Lonestar Memories is one I enjoy because of that rawness.

The top of Lonestar Memories begins with a smoky clary sage, this note has the feel of the outdoors and also imparts the woodsmoke feel of an open campfire. From this beginning Mr. Tauer then takes out the birch tar from his perfumers smudge pot and layers it on nice and thick. This is the raw aspect of Lonestar Memories if that was all Mr. Tauer did it would’ve been too much but he chose a full jasmine as the partner to the birch tar. That deeply indolic feel of jasmine takes the birch tar and smoothes out the rougher edges while adding even more depth to the central leather note in the birch tar. The middle act of Lonestar Memories is one of the more memorable leather accords out there, for me, for this mix of birch tar and jasmine. I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t have wanted to be one of the testers for Lonestar Memories while Mr. Tauer was trying to tune this balance because a little more or less of either of these notes and this perfume would be hideous. Thankfully the time was taken to strike the right balance and it makes Lonestar Memories memorable. As the leather mellows over a good long time a mix of cedar and sandalwood along with myrrh and vetiver come forward. These attenuate Lonestar Memories with strong woods and resins to finish this fragrance off a little more quietly than it began.

Lonestar Memories has excellent longevity and average sillage.

Of course Andy Tauer has gone on to prove his perfume prowess over and over again but I will cherish Lonestar Memories because it was this perfume which showed me he was going to blaze his own trail through the perfumed prairie.

    Have a Tranquil Thursday everyone.

    Maxim's Pour Homme
    by Maxim's de Paris

This fragrance literally took my breath away the first time I wore it.
This has only happened with only a few other fragrances - 'Vintage' Tabarome,
Tabacco Toscano, C&S No.88 and Giorgio For Men come immediately to mind.

Tobacco was not listed in the pyramid below - I added it. On me, Maxim's
Pour Homme is a tobacco powerhouse in the same vein as 'Vintage' Tabarome.
It is discontinued, but can still be found if you look around.

Thanks again to Dimitrios and Dimitri for championing this one!

Top notes: Bergamot oil, Clary Sage oil, Fruit Complex, Lavender Complex
Middle notes: Carnation, Cedarwood oil, Jasmin, Lily of the Valley, Sandal
Base notes: Amber, Tobacco, Leather, Moss, Musk, Patchouli
Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, and sorry I could not travel both and be one traveler, long I stood and looked down one as far as I could to where it bent in the undergrowth; Then took the other, as just as fair, ...... I shall be telling this with a sigh somewhere ages and ages hence: Two roads diverged in a wood, and I -- I took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference. - Robert Frost
