Have I told you about the scent of jasmine? Have I spoken about the smell of the sea? The earth is scented. And I perfume myself to enhance what I am. That's why I can not wear a perfume that bothers me. Perfuming is an instinctive wisdom. And like all art, it requires some knowledge of yourself..."

Ooo, ooo, since I'm still up I'm going to post what my SOTD for Friday most likely will be, then I won't be the thread killer who posts last, lol.

I am thinking of either JHAG Midnight Oud or JHAG Lady Vengeance. Or maybe Narciso Rodriguez for Her EDP. Or maybe my newly arrived Ungaro Diva parfum! Or maybe I shouldn't post yet since I haven't made up my mind. Anyone want to choose for me? ;-j

Back to being the thread killer, I guess, lol.

    Morning all,
thanks for all the well wishes yesterday. Rheumatism is a crappy thing to live with, but you just have to make the best of your situation. It's worse now when the weather has been cold, I feel really old and worn despite being 36.

Coughing my lungs out today, stuffed nose to the point that my sense of smell is compromised.

Still, up and about and wearing the underrated classic White Linen.

Finishing the week of small perfumers with a new one.

    Costamor Sugarwood

I grew up in South Florida and spent a lot of time traveling throughout the Caribbean. For those of you who have visited any of those islands the one consistent crop that grows on, almost all, of them is sugar cane. If you go on a tour of any of these islands it is almost inevitable that you will be taken to a sugar plantation and handed a stalk of sugar cane to suck on. If you’ve ever had that experience you’ve smelled the unique smell of green and sweet that natural sugar cane produces, it is a singular sensation.

In 2009 Elizabeth Wright founded Costamor mainly to produce perfumes that capture the smells of her childhood trips to Costa Rica. One of the first offerings from Costamor is Sugarwood. For Sugarwood she wanted a fragrance that captured that raw sugar cane experience in olfactory form. In many ways I think it took a perfumer who has spent time in the tropics to really understand what was necessary to create this sugar cane accord because Ms. Wright manages to achieve it.

Sugarwood begins with that sugar cane accord and it is a moist sweetness coupled with a slight green woodiness. Ms. Wright makes a great choice in pairing this sugar cane accord with a green fig note. The fig serves to delineate the green aspect of the sugar cane while modulating the sweetness. This combination will be present throughout the development of Sugarwood. The heart is a gentle mix of iris, jasmine, and peony. It gives a light floral heart to Sugarwood that is a nice complement to the sugar cane. The base is cedar and vanilla with a hint of musk. The vanilla takes Sugarwood into more traditional sweet territory but Ms. Wright keeps a light hand on the vanilla and therefore it never really overwhelms the closing stages of Sugarwood.

Sugarwood has average longevity and below average sillage.

It is nice to find fragrances that remind one of one’s youth. It is even nicer to find one with the quality of Sugarwood.

    Have a Flippant Friday everyone.

Guerlain's Parure EdT. This perfume is so odd and striking and so long-lasting! Lilac-rose-plum up top, leather-patchouli-oakmoss behind. It smells like a very masculine leather chypre with some diva-like lilac and rose thrown in - the result is quite special...

    Chanel Antaeus

Getting ready for sniff and speak with one of my favorite leather chypres (though some may debate it's classification, I would not).

"The top notes include lemon, lime, coriander, myrtle, clary sage, and bergamot. The heart is composed of thyme, basil, rose and jasmine, while the base of patchouli, castoreum, labdanum, and oak moss. The perfume was created by Jacques Polge in 1981."

I will take your advice - Diva it is!

I'm killing time before I have to leave for work. Ironic, since I am usually running out the door at the last possible minute, applying lipstick and putting on shoes as I run for the car. I had to get my daughter to school very early, so I had time for a Starbucks run (must. have. coffee!) and play time on the internet.

    Hello everyone!

Thanks to the generous sample from a very special BaseNoter, I'm in my third full wearing of Givrine, by E. Coudray. It's been on my WishList since my first wearing, but I just promoted it to five-star status (another one!) What a seductive and beautiful fragrance - a fresh and vivacious but soft green floral. Despite the fruit in the pyramid, I don't get any real fruitiness, and just a touch of sweetness. The fruit just seems to give the florals some tangy sparkle at the top, and a bit of lusciousness at the heart. But the peony and violet (I don't get any gardenia) are the standouts to me, and they're gorgeous over the warm and creamy sandalwood and clean musk. The sillage is stunning.

Although I wouldn't say they smell alike, I'd put Givrine near Estee Lauder's Pleasures in the floral family, but Givrine is much more subtle, and a lot more elegant and luxurious. I find Pleasures rather sharp, and I have to be in the right mood for its pink pepper note, thankfully absent in the silky, smooth Givrine. Another fragrance that comes to mind is Ralph Lauren's original Lauren, but again, Givrine isn't sharp or insistent - it's the slightly spicy green floral accord that they have in common...it might just be the treatment of the violet. At any rate, to my nose Givrine is superior to these, and I'm having a hard time coming up with an example of this type of floral that Givrine would not outshine.

Top notes - bergamot, kumquat, watermelon
Middle notes - peony, lily-of-the-valley, violet, gardenia
Bottom notes - sandalwood, patchouli, musk, blonde woods

I missed it too, so Happy Belated Birthday, Rtamara!
    Happy Birthday ECaruthers!

    Guerlain - Parure
    A Mr. Guerlain inspired choice, Parure has been compared to Mitsouko;
a fruity-chypre with plum rather than peach.
In Japan, the plum blossom heralds the beginning of spring.

    Notes for Guerlain Parure
    Top: bergamot, clary sage, galbanum
    Middle: plum, lilac, rose, jasmine
Base: oakmoss, earthy forest notes, spices, vetiver, styrax, Peru balsam, wood

SMM, I enjoyed your review. Sugarwood sounds like a must-try for me, as I chewed the occasional sugar cane in my youth, too. (Chergui brings that back for me, a bit.)

    Happy Birthday ECaruthers!

Today I analysed data of a study we conducted - and the data seem to be good enough for publication. Yay! Additionally to filling out a questionnaire we also measured our participants' eyemovements (with an eyetracker). I've not taken a look at the eyemovement data yet, but if we find something on that measure it would be very cool indeeed (or as the prof would say: "sexy" ).

Hello, to you Petra Ichor. The first post I made here was not long ago, and felt scary to play with the big girls - but I quickly found it's a very welcoming place.

Trikkirikki, hope you feel better soon.
Welcome back Needcoffee- Probaly I didn't know you before but I LOVE your new name.

Asha and Kumquat, those are gorgeous photos!

Today I'm wearing Annick Goutal's Le Chèvrefeuille. Amazing how it reduces fine lines and wrinkles, nips in the waistline and eliminates grey hairs. This is the real youth dew.

    Have a great Friday, everyone!

Hey all! Happy birthday to rtamara and ECaruthers! Glad to see RHM is feeling better!

It's a beautiful day out there, and I've spent the morning reading email and Basenotes, so I must get up and at 'em. I'm going to be doing a lot of yard work out there in the sunny cold (it's about 60º, and yes, that's cold! ) so I wanted something bright and floral. I was looking for my Armani Prive Eclat de Jasmin, but happened across J'Adore first. I haven't worn this in *ages* and it's such a pretty little thing.

Chyphres tomorrow! Yay! In the meantime, happy Friday!

Roberto, I'm sitting next to you on the Basenotes bus today. Everyone else can budge up so I can have a good whiff of that lumberjack goodness that makes me go 'whoo!!!!' And Mikey Perez, you can sit on my other side, because I lurve the Habit Rouge edp bigtime. So that's me in my happy place. (Easily pleased, yes, I know. But hmm, nowadays the things that please me are in suuuuch good taste, darling.)

Happy birthday RTamara and ECaruthers - I hope you get to party all weekend and smell DIVINE for days and days.

My SOTD: I found my sample of Parfums d'Empire Ambre Russe (I'm pretty sure I have Taolady to thank for this) and it's lovely. I finally got the vodka and champagne topnotes today; most unusual and interesting. But it's dominated for me by the tobacco and gets very close to Amber Narguile (which I used to adore but which went Nazgul on me last year, but, I haven't tried it this winter so maybe I should). However it dries down into a very nice base which isn't oversweet, thankfully.

The power of the tobacco in this makes me debate if I'd buy a full bottle. But I might buy a bottle of Cuir Ottoman, which I wore yesterday. So this goes onto the decant list. Maybe that's where CO should be too. I like the motto 'sample, decant, FB' these days. I'm so fickle. And with all these scents, how do I have time to wear them all?

Chypres tomorrow. What to wear, what to wear? Do I get to use my puns? "I feel so chypre..." etc etc.

Beet lifted jasmine, the way a bullnecked partner lifts a ballerina, and the pair came on stage on citron's fluty cue. Well I started the day in Dior Diorissimo, but wanted something warmer.

Now I am trying out my newjustarrivedonlymomentsago FRACAS by Robert Piguet. I thought that this would be a new never been smelled before scent for me, but I instantly recognized it...guess I didn't know that this was Fracas. Go figure!
