    Default Isn't It Ironic That.....

The Male Fragrance Board is where all the activity is, where all the members are, whereas in Female Fragrance discussion it's always dead. LoL...this is a retarded statement, but fragrance-lovers is typically a girly/feminine thing to rant about, whereas us guys should be raving about our trucks, Dodges, and Cadillacs, hahahah.

I just found it funny how the female fragrance is not really active whereas male fragrance is always crackin'. Not to downplay any of our interests here, I just thought it funny

We guys like smelling GOOOD, haha.

With a new wave of members, comes question # 7 of the BN Ten Commandments. It's an inevitability.

I don't think that is irony.

Irony would be: some men who think that being interested in fragrance is gay, but then buy fragrance in order to attract women. That's ironic.

We may as well admit it- males are usually far more well-groomed, fashion-conscious, even slightly more vain, than the usual "rugged" stereotypical preconception

    +1.

I'm still not sure whether this is a good thing though
Isn't it easier for those men who simply dont bother because all those trends, fashions etc dont even cross their minds? Not that they'd reject it but rather dont have any connection nor interest whatsoever to be part of the "fashion, vanity, etc" world.
But then again, I wouldnt want to part with my frags, my clothes (not that I'd consider myslef vain though) etc.
I dont know, just a couple of thoughts..

Women may be less active on this forum because we guys get easily obsessed with something, and we need to fuel our obsession every time we have the occasion, in this case, discussing fragrances.

    It is ironic because -
Love for fragrance is something that is most likely to be associated with a female.

    It isn't ironic because -
Males are more active in internet forums, no matter what the theme is.

As MrClmind says : "Really? Where do you get these statistics? "

And it still is not ironic. Heck, it is closer to being onomatopoeia, than ironic. ...okay, maybe not ....but it's still not ironic.

Fueling my theory that I was "raised by men." (which I wasn't, but my mother is <while a "housewife">... a composer, artist, and a free spirit like myself, and my dad took me under his wing as "surrogate son" until the first brother was old enough to go with him on his hunting and fishing forays.)

It's as GB and joxer96 have said. Basenotes began as a place for men to discuss male fragrances. There were already places like POL and MUA for women. The FFD wasn't added until many years after the establishment of BN (something like 5 years, I think). So while there are more men than women here at BN, there are also far more women than men over on POL and MUA.

Interesting. I've been collecting scents for years, but have definitely not been discussing scent online. Had no idea there were separate sites based on gender. (FWIW, which is quite possibly NADA)

Well, they are really not separated by gender. There are more femals on POL and Makeup Alley, but there are also many men who participate there.

It is a good thing that I like hanging out with the guys!

Sorry, I didn't mean to imply that there was gender segregation. It's simply that Grant started BN because there were no groups or forums dedicated to the discussion of men's fragrance (BN actually evolved from a Yahoo group begun '98 or '99). The internet was a much smaller place back then; he saw a need, filled it, then in a stroke of genius established the directory which led to the Basenotes we know today.

This question of "Where are all the women?!" pops up a few times a year. Maybe it's time to include a bit of history in the BN FAQ.

I seem to remember a thread or two by your hand where you got your arse handed to you over on the FFD. No need to be bitter about it, sweets.
It is known that there are an infinite number of worlds, simply because there is an infinite amount of space for them to be in. However, not every one of them is inhabited. Any finite number divided by infinity is as near nothing as makes no odds, so the average population of all the planets in the Universe can be said to be zero. From this it follows that the population of the whole Universe is also zero, and that any people you may meet from time to time are merely products of a deranged imagination.

I thought I read it as a "fact" somewhere, but will freely admit that it could be one of those assumed and incorrect "facts" about the net, like "90% of stuff on the internet is porn", which is of course completely incorrect.

Yeah, it could be ( assumed and incorrect). And that is not to say that you are incorrect, but these stats are really hard to come up with.

This comes up as a new thread every few months - as mentioned, the site was a male focused site for many years (male scents, grooming, etc etc) and the female board was added much later. There are a number of female focused scents similar to bnotes, but not as much for male.
