BMM10 The Road To The Final Spritz Day 7-8 Recap

The first round is over and we have the second round dance card all filled out with the thirty-two survivors from the first round. I’m Somerville Metro Man your host for The Road To The Final Spritz. The final eight matches contained no real drama as all of the matches were one-sided affairs. We did see the second #1 seed knocked out of the tournament in the first round and an even split of lower seeded vs. higher seeded winners over these two days..

The two most lopsided wins were out in the Serge Lutens Region where the fourth seeded Dior Homme Fighting Iris completely obliterated Dyptique Eau Lente, 70-11. Setting up a second round match with twelfth seeded Serge Lutens Chergui who likewise knocked the atomizer clean off the bottle of Comme des Garcons Avignon, 68-18. The second round match between Chergui and the Fighting Iris should be more interesting than these matches were.

Out in the Guerlain region we saw our second #1 seed fall as Thierry Mugler A*Men did not have their prayers answered as the #16 seed L’Artisan Dzing! zinged and spritzed their way to a 10-point victory, 49-39. Next up for the Cinderellas from L’Artisan will be eighth seeded Azzaro pour Homme who took out Jean-Paul Gaultier Le Male, 55-22. That removed the last Gaultier scent from this year’s tournament.

Out in the Creed Region Thierry Mugler Cologne was trying to keep from having Mugler go 0 for the tournament after the upset of A*Men and B*Men’s loss earlier. They faced a tall order in one of the most stacked sub-regions in the entire tournament as they faced Creed Green Irish Tweed. Many thought this was going to be a close match of the green juice of Cologne versus the Mean Green of GIT. It turned out that GIT was very mean and they squeezed the juice out of Cologne, and sent the entire house of Mugler packing, 59-28. The Mean Green’s opponent in the next round will be the #1 seed in the region Guerlain Vetiver. Guerlain was very bitter at having only four entries in this year’s tournament and having their highest seed placed in the toughest region; Guerlain was playing with anger and it showed. Chanel was one of those Houses that got more bids than Guerlain and Vetiver was bound and determined to show Platinum Egoiste that while their House might have received more bids Platinum Egoiste was going to receive a whupping. Vetiver did just that putting them away early and started the chant of “overrated” to the departing Chanel fans as they left before the final buzzer. The second round match between Green Irish Tweed and Vetiver is the marquee match in the second round and the winner is going to have to be a favorite to make the Final Spritz.
The last two matches in the Creed create a second round match of old and new as #6 seed Aramis Havana, 66-14 winners over Azzaro Chrome; faces #14 seed Tom Ford Grey Vetiver, 52-25 winners over third seeded Givenchy Pi. Grey Vetiver as a first year participant showed some surprising strength in knocking off Pi and that will have to continue, to prevail over Havana, in the next round.

After the first round Creed, Guerlain and Dior each have four bottles still in the tournament. They’re followed by Chanel and Yves St. Laurent with three apiece and Serge Lutens still has two playing on. The first round was littered with blow outs as 25 of the 32 matches had margins of victory greater than 20 points. Two #1 seeds are gone and if these first round matches were uninspiring the committee has made up for that with some great second round matches.

Remember to keep voting and watching as only you have the ability to determine the winner.
I’ll be back in two days as we’ll know four of the Scented Sixteen.
Until then, I'll see you back here on The Road to The Final Spritz.
