BMM10 The Road To The Final Spritz Final Recap

Welcome back Fragrance Fans I’m Somerville Metro Man and I’m here on location for The Final Spritz. The Osborne Olfactory Arena in Basenotes City has just witnessed a fight to the finish and a new champion for 2010 has been crowned. The two combatants in this final game Tauer Perfumes L’air du Desert Marocain and Serge Lutens Chergui had won their way here in impressive style.

Tauer Perfumes L’Air du Desert Marocain was the first small perfumer to find one of its bottles in the Big Boutique. L’Air du Desert Marocain was bitterly disappointed in not being included last year. This year they truly showed they belonged in this tournament as the list of their victims came from the biggest perfume Houses out there. That list started with Creed Millesime Imperiale, followed by Bvlgari Black, then Guerlain Heritage, and Dior Eau Sauvage in the regional final. In the Fragrant Four they completed their tour of the big Houses by trouncing Chanel Egoiste by double-digits. The Scirocco Offense truly was a force of nature and so far there was no bottle in the tournament who was able to stand up to it for an entire game.

If there was going to be one bottle that could weather the sandstorm that L’Air was going to bring to The Final Spritz it was going to be Serge Lutens Chergui. Another bottle left out of last year’s tournament and another bottle which showed the committee’s short-sightedness in the way they played this year. As impressive as L’Air du Desert Marocain’s march to The Final Spritz was, Chergui’s was even stronger. Of the five opponents Chergui faced the closest any one of them got was 18 points. Every other margin of victory was greater than 20. The list of victims was no group of weak sillaged bottles either from Comme des Garcons Avignon, to Dior Homme, to Czech & Speake No. 88, to Boucheron Jaipur Homme and finally the overall #1 seed Guerlain Vetiver in the Fragrant Four. Chergui had shown they were the 500lb. gorilla of this year’s tournament.

Both sets of fans felt like this game was going to be different and the tension they showed before the game was a good preview of what was to come. As L’Air du Desert Marocain took the court their fans began the “Whooooosh!” sound that had seen five opponents swept away. As they have every match Chergui looked on impassively as they stood at center boutique in their simple rectangular glory waiting for the match to start. The Serge Lutens fans had been here last year with Ambre Sultan, only to leave disappointed, they were confident but wary of getting their hopes up for a second year in a row.

Both bottles approached the mid-boutique circle and from the glint off of both bottles it was obvious both were ready to seize this opportunity. The beginning of the match was a torrid spray-for-spray battle and before anyone in the O-rena could take a breath or sit down the score was tied at 10. Then has had happened so many times in this tournament the Scirocco Offense began to hum away in unison with their fan’s “Whooosh” and the other bottle began to miss and with a little time left in the half L’Air du desert Marocain had a nine point lead, 37-28. In every other game L’Air would build upon that lead but something different began to happen here. Chergui started to solve the Scirocco Offense and began keeping L’Air from scoring and Chergui began to feed off their defensive success and started scoring again. By half time they had whittled the deficit down to three, 38-35. As the bottles retreated to the locker rooms Andy Tauer was seen walking in with L’Air. He had just returned from Exscence in Milan in time to see L’Air play this Final Spritz in their fancy new bottles.

The second half was a wonderful exhibition of fragrant flamboyance as both of these high-powered bottles showed why they were here. L’Air had made this Final Spritz on the effectiveness of their Scirocco Offense and they weren’t going to stop. Chergui believed they had finally figured out a way to stop it and they were going to keep up the pressure. The early part of the second half saw L’Air doggedly defend their halftime lead and the margin remained at three with one quarter remaining, 45-42. The fourth quarter would be something to witness. Chergui began with a 10-4 run to take the lead 52-49. Then L’Air blew back to cut the margin to one at 52-51 heading into the final minute. Chergui scored twice in succession and then L’Air began a frantic effort to try and send The Final Spritz to overtime but they just kept missing the critical shots. As the clock ticked to 0:00 the score read Serge Lutens Chergui 54-Tauer Perfume L’Air du Desert Marocain 52.

Andy Tauer walked over to the owner’s box and shook hands with Serge Lutens you could see smiles on both men’s faces as they knew both bottles had done their Houses proud. Unfortunately all sporting contests only have one winner and Serge Lutens got to stand at the center of the boutique surrounded by his victorious Chergui and raise the Basenotes March Madness Gold Flacon over his head in celebration.

Before we leave you with our traditional rendition of “One Spritzing Moment” it is time to hand out the thanks to bluesoul for once again organizing a truly memorable event. I now turn over the proceedings to bluesoul for the Closing Ceremonies and Awards Show.

Thanks to all of you for participating and reading along.
Until next year, Somerville Metro Man….Out!

Awesome write up, SMM. And thanks, Bluesoul for organising this exciting contest.
Chergui rocks! (But it was down to the wire and LADDM sure gave it a mighty scare!)

Hats off to bluesoul for organizing this fantastic tournament, to Sommerville Metro Man for adding greatly to the context and excitement! Also to Chergui, the new champ, and apparently to zliang, who might have won the prediction contest. Bravo all around and you have me looking forward to next year already!

But in extra time (had there been any allowed) LDDM actually won the popular vote.

Good game though, both great fragrances.

Congrats to Bluesoul and SMM once again for making another special event!
In a world where people smell bad, it is the personal responsibility of every Basenoter to improve the world one SotD at a time...
