Default The bottom 5 worst fragrance houses in your opinion

Some frag houses are ridiculously and devastatingly inferior to the others in style, class, quality, customer service, and whatever else you can think of. Name three 5 of the worst fragrance houses in your eyes, be it designer or niche. (Sound familiar? )

    Here's my opinion:

    Niche:
    Michael Storer
    Art of Perfumery
    Profumum Roma
    By Mark Buxton
    TIE: Jo Malone / becker.eshaya

    Mainstream:
    Clean
    Fresh Scents by Terri
    United Colors of Benetton
    Ferrari
TIE: Lamborghini / Bugatti / Jaguar
    (Stick to making cars please!!)

Of the "mainstreamers" I'd say Davidoff, because they've produced a lot of frags and I haven't liked any of them. Obviously, this doesn't mean the frags are poorly constructed, cheap, or anything like that, but rather it's just a matter of personal preferences.

    Probably...

L'Artisan Perfumer - just nothing that I like enough to buy

Yves Saint Laurent - Really just bottle after bottle of pretty awful fragrances for men. I only have Opium and even then I have to be in the right mood to wear it.

Givenchy - The only one I come close to liking is Pi Neo.

I agree with whoever said above about the car branded fragrances, absolutely awful the lot of them.

    Here's my choice:

    1. Alfred Dunhill
    2. Kenneth Cole ( Sorry, I do like KC clothing)
    3. Azzaro ( I know they have the classic pour Homme, and Visit is good, but this house could just be so much better)
    4. Hugo Boss ( embarrassingly poor)
    5. Calvin Klein
    6. Tommy Hilfiger
    7. Davidoff ( but, Zino is still awesome. But that was 26 years ago)
    8. Lacoste ( I like the Feist song in the commercial. I like Feist. And that is about it. Oh, and your clothing is ugly too !)
Seeking: Bottles/decants : of Feeling Man, Gucci pour Homme, Essence of John Galliano, Nicole Miller (vintage), Opium pour Homme, Oxford & Cambridge...etc.

Seeking decant/sample of Jil Sander Feeling Man, Cacharel Nemo, Bijan for Men EDC, Lanvin for Men, Giorgio VIP, Il Lancetti and other old school frags ....etc. I have samples to swap.

Rather tan talk about houses, I'd prefer to mention corporations licensing brands releasing scents that I dislike:

Procter & Gamble Prestige Beauté: it manufactures and sells brands like Hugo Boss, Alfred Dunhill, Dolce & Gabbana, etc. They discontinued most of Rochas classics and are continously releasing unappealing mill of the run scents and discontinuing the good ones. They own Jean Patou but can't catch up to this houses' tradition.
    Coty Prestige: Same reason.
L'Oreal: The license Ralph Lauren and many others. Among them, they bought Roger & Gallet and discontinued many excellent scents made by them, changed their pricing policies and decided to overcharge R&G's eaux. As per the other companies mentioned, releases made under the brandnames licensed are the usual crap. As a matter of fact, I am worried about YSL's fragrances.
Interparfum: same reason. Lanvin's classics are gone and replaced by the usual blends. Brooks Btothers and Lacroix's are among many scents licensed by them.

Wow. I think my favorites have all been thrown out here!

Tom Ford - I love Black Orchid! It smells sooooo good on my wife.
Ralph Lauren - Original Polo is all time top ten frag. Purple Label gets me compliments all the time.
Aramis - Havana is my favorite frag by far. Tuscanny and JHL are great too!
Guerlain - Original Vetiver, need I say more?

If someone would please nominate Creed, then my list of favorites would be complete, only in the wrong thread.

I will nominate only one house as being the worst: Porsche

From what I've sampled, I think the worst niche house is Montale. IMO, the only reason they get admiration here is because they are ridiculously strong and BN has a disproportionate (compared to the masses) number of people who value power and sillage more than anything else in their frags.

The ones that aren't downright horrid or disgusting are typically knock-offs of something that can be found for 1/3 the price and with 3 times the balance and complexity.

It is known that there are an infinite number of worlds, simply because there is an infinite amount of space for them to be in. However, not every one of them is inhabited. Any finite number divided by infinity is as near nothing as makes no odds, so the average population of all the planets in the Universe can be said to be zero. From this it follows that the population of the whole Universe is also zero, and that any people you may meet from time to time are merely products of a deranged imagination.

    I kinda have to agree.

I enjoy many of Montale's scents, such as Black Aoud, Red Aoud, Oud Cuir d'Arabie, and even the sweet and sticky Sweet Oriental Dream. However, I feel that some of Montale's releases are terribly blended and some are merely tweaked / volume increased variations on previous successes from both other houses and their own.

I am happy that Montale releases a lot of stuff -- the more options we consumers have the better. Still, it is sad that some are very poorly blended. If you need supporting evidence, go order samples of Embruns d'Essaouira, Wood-Spices, Aoud Ambre, Mukhallat, Sunset Flowers, Vanille Extasy (HM), Vetiver des Sables, Soleil de Capri (Light Blue anyone?), Dew Musk, Fruits of the Musk, and Wild Aoud.

Just about any celebrity-branded fragrances. I haven't sniffed them all, but experience to date says stay away. Seems especially true if the celebrity is famous primarily for being famous, as in they're famous for running around half-naked in music videos, rather than any actual display of artistic talent. I'm too nice to name names, but you probably have one or two of these on your "most-hated" list, too.

ELdO. Their few remarkable fragrances are not good as actual fragrances! Maybe great for smell-o-vision? The rest are surprisingly safe or bad. I haven't sampled them all. Only about half. Excuse the preemptive judgment. Love-hate the silly image to the point of confusion!

Prada ... safe. Why don't they try to match up to their amazing fashions? Will it take a Miu Miu line to do it?

Dior for the most recent reforms and current media image...an insult to a classic and could still be so relevant house! Apologies to Duke, as I worship vintage Dior, but then again I really like Cacharel and Aramis unabashedly, for what they are: cheap and cheerful, probably cheap and depressing to those who dislike them.

Fendi for their near-criminal tossing of all their amazing old lineup in favor of (shit hitting the) Fan di Fendi.

Penhaligon's ... pretty bottles, but I've always hated their uptight image, especially the childish primness of their women's scents. Yes Creed has an even more irritating image, but at least they've had a couple of perfect scents.
