Default Editions de Parfums Frederic Malle raising prices ;'(

I was just in Barney's New York (in Boston) purchasing a bottle of Editions de Parfums Frederic Malle Vetiver Extraordinaire. They informed me that Malle will be raising prices significantly across the board within the next few weeks. Get it while it's cheap ;')

My 1.7 oz. bottle was $150.00 today.

I suppose there were too many riff raff buying his scents-- remember the comment about not wanting to smell like one's maid!

But this pushes Vetiver Extra. away from my plebian pursestrings, and for that I am truly saddened.

This must be one of the inevitable consequences of the recovering global economy.
The sales of luxurious goods & expensive cars have increased significantly during the last few months and the brand owners cannot contain their greed anymore. The pricing mantra has always been 'to get the maximum out of the customers pocket, that he's willing to pay'.

Come to think of it, who'd stop wearing Vetiver Extraordinaire or Carnal Flower just because the price went up by say 20%?

Me for one. There are only several thousand other fragrances out there to choose from. I won't be buying the Musc Ravageur I've been planning on buying unless I find a used bottle somewhere.

For those who are interested --

You can still get most of the Frederic Malle 100ml bottles for around $165 + shipping [conversion from UK pound] from Les Senteurs. (after tax break for int'l customers) But yes, it seems FM's price has increased worldwide as you could get it for about $140 for 100ml shipped a month a go, which was quite a bargain IMO.

The FM scents I enjoy and don't have in my wardrobe are VE, French Lover, and the majestic Carnal Flower. Will I get them any time soon? Probably not!

It's really OK. Mallle can take those juices and spritz all of them up where the sun doesn't shine on for all i care. There are other equally if not more beautiful fragrances out there. Some of us have our heads screwed on right well enough not to be taken hostage by any fragrance house. Anyway if I love it, I'll buy it. 'Affordability' is a secondary consideration.

Btw, if a housekeeper wears a Malle fragrance, I must say she/he does have pretty discerning nose!

I think i have so many fragrances at this moment at my wardrobe that if all niche and mainstream houses decide to increase suggestively their prices, if they depend of me to keep alive they'll die poor.

The € prices on the French version of their website seem not to have changed. Unless the website has not been updated, it's possible that the $ increase is due to a change in the exchange rate.

The prices haven't changed at the store that exclusively sells the Editions de Parfum line here in Vienna either. It's probably due to the exchange rate -- the dollar hasn't been this weak against the euro for at least about 2 years.

I just got off Barney's website and I see that Malle prices have gone up about 20% since I checked a week or two ago. I was going to pop for MR, but now that it is 20 % more I will settle for a decant and forget about a bottle. His stuff is not that good to warent these prices. What was the name of that MR smellalike...oh yeah, Meharees, or something like that.

Are you seriously thinking that this is a play done by Frederic Malle?

The recent upswing in prices are solely becuase of the internationally weakened dollar.
As far as I know, a 3.4oz Musc Ravageur is still €165 from their site, so it's the same.

However, the dollar has plummeted recently, loosing its purchasing power by over 30%, even in the last few months. This is where the discrepancy lies.

It's a complicated and bizarre business, a million variables at work. With things becoming more and more synthetic it's becoming even more bizarre. Frederic Malle has little to do with it. Aromachemicals are big business.

It's generally recognized that only about 3 to 5 percent of a perfume's price tag goes for its smell.

FM is an art. Nothing compares to Malle perfumes. French perfumery in it's best.
I guess some Malle perfumes (Iris poudre, Une Rose, Portrait of a lady, Carnal flower) are not cheap to make.
1 ml of good quality rose essential oil or absolute costs 25£.

It would appear they are pricing themselves away from the Chav scum so their brand doesn't end up mullered like Burberry (clothing) and Stone Island have ... and I would say Creed now.

While in the beginning this sounded a bit like a "conspiracy theory" to me - pace, pluran! - I now tend to believe you are right. I wonder who might ever figure this business out? While I hold the idea expressed by DreamerII close to my heart, I'm afraid the notion of perfume in the making (not in our perception) is everything e x c e p t autonomous art. And I fear that even Malle, though cultivating this very image, is far from actually incorporating it.

    Art for sale = business.

If your art is any good, it will sell. If it doesn't sell, that's the best way to get the hint as to what kind of "artist" you are.

As for the price, the free market will best determine that, as it does with most things. It's the seller who needs to determine the best price point to maximize profit. No point in getting upset when the price goes up... if you can't swing it, there are millions of other options.

And what fragrance house isn't raising its prices these days? They will do it and they are sure that the fragrance community will continue to purchase their products.

I like Portrait of a Lady a lot and Musc Raveguer, but I am appalled that they are charging EUR320 for POAL and EUR214 for Musc Ravageur at the Joyce in Hong Kong, this is at least 30-40%% higher than your list price on the internet. At this price, I could be purchasing Amouage Attars / Clive Christensen or 2 bottles of niche perfumes at the price of one Frederic Malle. I wonder if FM increase prices again (its been up 30% since my last purchase 1.5 years back) or is Joyce grossly marking up prices? This makes a customer such as I think that, despite really like their fragrances may not make a purchase because there are other alternatives at the price point.

If Fredric Malle did not raise prices, then I hope this query draws attention because this actually makes their fragrance line less competitive. Recently, Tom Ford' Private Line has launched at another mall in Hong Kong (effectively no longer exclusive at Tom Ford stores) and I noticed that they cut their prices by 3-5% , admittedly, their prices are higher, but their quality is lower, but this move of theirs has made their line more attractive.

This also makes me question if I am selling my GPM, Noir Epices, Carnal Flower etc at too low a price given their price increase.

This is more likely, a case of pricing for what the market will bear. I have a hard time justifying even the prices on the FM website, but the ones you mention would automatically put FM off my to buy list.

Get your FM fix from the internet. Essenza Nobile in Germany sells FMs at the same price as on the FM website and for orders over €250 you get free shipping to HK. And don't forget to ask for the price included VAT to be refunded (19% in Germany), it may come in handy in case you have to pay import duties.

When I purchased my 100ml bottle of Vetiver Extraordinaire, back in 2006, it cost exactly £100. The price is now £150 for what essentially is a Haitian vetiver and synthetic musk cocktail - a 50% increase. I was a newbie back then but there's no way I would ever pay that amount of money again when vetiver essential oil is significantly cheaper, more potent and just as complex to wear.

I've yet to own another Frederic Malle and severely doubt this will ever happen. But when so much (unjustified) reverence is heaped upon one house, you can't blame it for wanting to take financial advantage of both the deluded perfumistas and naive housemaids with money to burn...
