Default Any classics from the last decade?

I've just started learning about fragrances and so I'm trying out lots of recommended scents. However, I find that most of the favorite scents are from the early 1900s to the 80s, for example Mitsouko, Habit Rouge and Green Irish Tweed.

After trying a couple of modern designer fragrances, it seems like there's a trend towards the citrusy/fresh route or the sweet vanilla route, and I can see why many people might not like them. However, I feel that some of the classics can smell a little dated, so I'm just wondering if there are any fragrances you would consider modern classics? Are there any fragrances from the last decade or so that you would put at a similar level as the classics I'd mentioned above?

Older ones - Fahrenheit, Drakkar Noir
Last decade - Arguably Terre d'Hermes (I think in another 10 years or so it'll be looked upon as a classic that combines the quality of older fragrances with a new edge)

Might get some backlash for this, but Tom Ford's Grey Vetiver.

Actually I agree, amazing dark citrus/vetiver there that when I put it on, I don't feel that it's so modern.

    Chanel Sycomore (2008)
    Guerlain Spiritueuse Double Vanille (2007)

I find these 2 have been particularly successful at updating their respective genres while staying true to their house style/traditions.

Andy Tauer's L' air du desert Marocain is, IMO already classic. I'm sure several of his other creations will be or already are as well!

What's considered a classic is largely down to personal taste, but I find the lines of Frederic Malle, Serge Lutens, Comme des Garcons, and a number of others, have produced artistic fragrances that I can imagine remaining popular and critically praised in years to come.

Always hard to classify things still very current as "classic" I think.

But tossing out a few that have made a big impression on a lot of people that seem like they'll be well regarded years from now:

    Terre D'Hermes
    YSL Rive Gauche Pour Homme
    L'Air du Desert Morocain
    Dior Homme
    Montale Black Oud
    Lutens Chergui
    Malle Musc Ravageur

Time will tell if any of these will be as well regarded as Habit Rouge, GIT and Mitsouko. Probably not, but who knows.

Superb list. I say probably yes.

I think L'Instant de Guerlain Pour Homme is an obvious classic scent. It was unique when it was released, and continues to be in a class of its own. Most importantly, I think it has a timeless quality to it that I believe will withstand the test of time.

^^^^ Yeah, 100% agree about L'Instant. Forgot that's pretty recent. My respect for Guerlain has been on the rise lately and they truly know what they're doing. But they require more patience than I have had until recently.

Hmmm... I'd never heard much about Helmut Lang fragrances; looks like I need to try them as well!

Just a question: If a fragrance has been discontinued, as is the case for the Langs, can they be considered classic since their availability was and is so limited? I understand they are (were) considered wonderful but so few have the opportunity to try them. I am also aware that many classic fragrances have been discontinued, i. e. My Sin, Shocking etc. but they were rather widely available for many years before being removed from distribution.
