Default Help me find a woody spicy oriental

    Hi guysssssssssssss
    Old Spice...
    no I joke.

But seriously though, I want to find a nice woody spicy oriental, if that makes sense. Something that is light, but not like the other Coolwater imitators out there...something that has 'spice' and maybe light woods.

Try Cacheral Nemo. It is discontinued, but easy to find online for a reasonable price.

    Hinoki, cedar, cardamom.

This is a sophisticated & sensual fragrance.

It's also one of the highest rated in the Basenotes directory (if that matters). 28 positive, 0 negative.

Tokyo by Kenzo. It's the Kenzo in the brown bottle on page 2. Guaiac wood and ginger, etc. I love the stuff. (not truly an "oriental", but it's close to that for a modern designer frag.)

I'd say go with Old Spice if you like it. Fine stuff.

From the 19 pages of men's stuff at the drug store I don't see much that I think very highly of. From the selection I'd suggest you consider Polo Ralph Lauren in the green bottle on page three. Lots of volume (118ml if that's not a typo) and not as expensive as a lot of 50ml bottles and even 30ml bottles of other stuff the site is selling.

Whoops, forgot about the oriental part, ChickenWings. I wouldn't call Polo an oriental, or spicy for that matter. I'd sure call it woody however.

Got this one couple of days ago and I have to say, yes. Evening fragrance for romantic occasions.

    Other recommendations :

Boss Bottled - tad bit synth but very appealing.

Cerruti 1881 Black - colder days evening fragrance, la nuit del' homme vibe, but a bit synthetic.

Gucci Envy for men - now this one is just mmmmmmmm...hard not to love it

Hugo Boss Dark Blue - shares the vibe with la nuit de l'homme but it is much louder, synthetic of course and quite less refined, but highly appealing

Givenchy Pi - woody oriental, but quite linear.

Joop! Joop! Homme - monster sillage woody oriental - careful with this one - try it with very light application and during colder days

A lot of good recommendations here.

My recommendations run from inexpensive to uber-expensive.

    Minotaure by Paloma Picasso
    MPG Bois de Turquie
Amouage Reflection Man (this one is light, just a bit heavier than Cool Water and its ilk, and is powdery and yet still spicy and sweet, characteristics it shares with Old Spice).

    Inside joke.

chikenwings, get Zino it's what you're asking for.

    However I noticed that OsmOz has categorized A*men as " Oriental-Woody " ( They're kidding, right? What F******* woods? Chocolate trees?? )

Cacharel PH as "Woody -Spicy " which is a bit of a stretch, more like nutmeg-oriental. Perhaps they refer to a Christmas Tree vibe, but in any case, it's a fine scent esp nighttime or winter, at least 4 stars.

. . . And two of my all time favorite scents are also listed:

Roma PH by Laura Biagotti as " Oriental Woody " too.
Frankly, " Tarzan + vanilla and Jane goes wild for him " would be more accurate . . .

    And--

Havana by Aramis is " Oriental Spicy. " I'd say tobacco+ bay rum+ the kitchen sink= feelgood babe magnet "

But in any case both are 5 star fragrances in my book, so what the hell . . .

    Cheers,

    Mario

Of those listed in Fragantica's DB under this family, I know / have these: Chanel's Egöiste, Christian Lacroix's Tumulte, Ermenegildo Zegna's Z Zegna Extreme, Escada's Casual Friday, Fendi Uomo, Gucci pour Homme, Guerlain Heritage, Guerlain L'Instant, Guerlain Vetiver Extreme, Hermes' Terre d'Hermes, Pierre Cardin pour Homme, La Martina Hombre, Armani Black (Code).

Chanel's Egöiste is unique: there is plenty of information on it so you may look for opinions and reviews in BN's data base. It does have very spicy top notes and a prominent sandalwood dry-down.

Terre d'Hermes can be described as unique too: it did receive many praises and negative criticism here in BN so you might as well check information on it. IMHO, it is a vetiver - prominent scent with a weird cologne-like base note that does not harm the blend at all.

There are resemblances between Gucci pour Homme and Lacroix's Tumulte. I like the last one better than the frst one, but it has been discontinued. Both are linear scents, Tumulte even more than Gucci, though.

Z Zegna Extreme is a bettter version than Armani Code, longer lasting and more complex IMHO.

Escada's Casual Friday is a very sweet blend anaologous to A*Men in spirit, but more wearable. My wife says it is patchouly - prominent. It has been discontinued, so this might rule it out.

Fendi Uomo has been discontinued too; it is a very 1980ish blend, bombastic in its top notes but subdued as time goes bye.

Guerlain L'Instant is a gourmandish woody spicy that is quite nice albeit a close-to-the-skin scent, thus the reason many BNoters prefer its EDP version.

Guerlain Vetiver Extreme has more intense vetiver notes than the regular one, thus being more simple.

Guerlain Heritage and Pierre Cardin pour Homme share some notes, but Heritage's quality tells in its complexity. As far as I remember, Pierre Cardin's vintage formula was different; I cannot help noticing a very animalic note in its top notes that was absent in the original blend. Longevity was also compromised.

La Martina Hombre is somehow a version of the original RL's Polo gone awry, in which the green notes have been amped up.

Old Spice? One of the better ones, indeed.
