Default New Fragrance: Carven Le Vetiver 2009

    From Fragrantica:

Vetiver is the first fragrance for men by Carven. It was launched in 1957, reedited in 1997 and launched again recently in 2009. The first fragrance was created by Edouard Hache, while designer of the original flacon was Jacques Bocquet. Composition of the 1957 included lemon, lavender, nutmeg, mandarin and petit grain oil in top notes. A heart was composed of vetiver, cedar, bergamot, jasmine, carnation, iris root and sandalwood, while base notes incorporated amber, musk, moss and myrrh.

The new, 2009 edition, Le Vetiver is based on the old formula and encompasses natural materials of high quality. New owners of the house are authorized to relaunch this fragrance under the new name.

Top notes are blossoming with mint, geranium, mandarin, lavender and absinth, a heart adds aromas of vetiver from Haiti, Dutch jinn, cold spices and patchouli, finishing with labdanum and musk.

Its flacon is more modern, coloured in white, with a stopper of grey wood resembling vetiver root. Creator is art director of the house, Ludovic Alban. The fragrance is available as 50 and 100ml edp.

Reviews for the 1997 version were really bad. Is this new one available in the USA? Anyone tried it? Anyone compared it to the previous version?

Far out. I'm going to be all over it when it shows up. Should be neat.

Carven can't seem to get enough of vetiver reformulations however. The current Carven Vetiver, which they don't seem to mention, is a vast improvement on the weak one they sold for many years, which was a reformulation of the original, which again this new 2009 claims it very much is.

Weird. The currently available Carven Vetiver, in the wedge shaped bottle is wonderful, by the way. Very like Givenchy's Vetyver.

I'll plunk down the dollars for this coming one. An edp!

I am waiting to sample this fragrance with fingers crossed. The original release was a great vetiver, and could hold it's own against most vetivers in the market place today. I guess we'll find out soon. I am looking forward to this one. Hope I am not disappointed.

Haven't seen the new one yet.

But the 2009 reissue of the 1957 version was very good. I'm not sure how close to the original version it is, but it is a great vetiver in its own right! It was nothing like the horrible 1997 version.

It's sad this didn't get more attention. At $25 it is a giant killer!

Never had the earlier versions, but bought a 100ml bottle of the newest variety blind from the Rue Royale Carven boutique in Paris and I'm glad I did. I like it.

This new Vetiver sounds promising IMO, and it's good for summer. Can't wait to test this one.

Despite coming so close to buying Carven Vetiver, I always turned back to make another buy. However this time, I am going to go all the way with this new vetiver.

    This is SO confusing.

OK...so how many different versions of this are there? Four? The original ('57), the reformulation ('97) that everyone says is bad, the re-re-formualation ('09) that DustB, hednic and SimonMoon like & the brand new Le Vetiver ('09)?

I tried this one What a pity it left me no feeling or impression at all. I know nothing about the original, but this 2009 Vetiver, so fresh, a little strong at first, but rapidly disappear, is just a non-character scent. When I first read the notes ( gin, musk, vetiver, geranium, mint, patchouli, spices...), I got so axciting. But... If you are looking for a modern and young and cheap Vetiver, I recommend Vetiver from Zara, or CdG

Mike, do you know where one would find the "re-reformulation"? That would be interesting to try, since I would assume the original is difficult to obtain.

re-reformulation was in 2007, if I recall correctly.
I`ve seen it in Rome, but was not impressed.

By coincidence, just yesterday I found those bottles in dusted boxes (I wonder where they come from? Europe? Moscow? Emirates?) in one shop near my office. SA told me that they just arived to them (pre-dusted bottles with pre-aged cellophane?)

Anyway, I found 2007 Vetiver Carven as good scent from blotter. I`ll check it out on skin.

The re-reformulation made it to the US in late 2006. I tried and purchased it in January 2007.

    Yes, possibly you are right.
I remember that in May 2007 I smelled it already in Rome.

I recently bought this (blind) from Cheapsmells.com (as mentioned above) where it is cunningly listed in the women's section; an earlier reissue (clear bottle, silver cap) is also listed under 'aftershaves': I have a sample of this too.

The presentation of the 2009 EdP is lovely; a sturdy box with a magnetic clasp and a chunky white bottle with wooden cap. On the back of the box it states (in French) 'made according to Carven's original formula from 1957'.

Onto the fragrance (N.B. based on one full wearing only) - In short: very good! Plenty of ('grassy'-type) vetiver, for starters, but the presentation is very smooth - somehow soft and a little soapy (not Vetiver Hombre-soapy though); tamed and more refined than many a vetiver. Nutmeg is very prominent, especially at the outset, so I can see where comparisons with the Guerlain might arise - but the similarities end there. Non-medicinal lavender and mint notes (subtly done) give it an almost mentholated coolness (it reminds me a little of Guerlain's Vetiver Frozen, but much better balanced). The listed juniper and artemisia are clearly discernible and give it a slightly old-school herbal quality.

On the downside, as with many an EdP it wears quite close to the skin; longevity is average: it's more or less at skin-scent level after about 6 hours (from 6 sprays) and I'm ready to top it up; it doesn't seem to evolve much apart from the vetiver decaying less speedily than the other notes.

All in all, it is quite beautiful. I recommend it

The 2006 reissue is a different beast altogether; drier, sharper, more woody, more peppery, somehow thinner and more astringent; lacking the depth of the 2009 scent.
