    Default Santal Noble issue- anosmic?

Nuts. Test wearing MPG Santal Noble today. I've seen so much praise for this, had to try it.

I applied fairly heavily but can't smell a thing. Checked with a couple of people and it's definitely there. And it is not "light" either I'm told.

So what's the deal? Am I just blind to this one? Frustrating.

Haven't experienced this effect wiht Santal Noble, but it's happened to me with Santal Imperial and Creed Original Vetiver. Now and then I just get a "block" on a fragrance. Others can smell it, I can't. Glad to find I'm not the only one who gets this effect.

I have the same problem with other scents. Estee Lauder - Beyond Paradise and Liz Claiborne - Mambo to name two. When i wear them I can barely smell anything, but my wife says its so strong it's burning her nose (I do overspray if I cant smell it I think).

    Also Azzaro - Pure Cedrate.

I was thinking of starting a thread about it to see if there is a common element among scents I can barely smell.

Darn...it may just take patience and few wearings. My nose was dead initially to a couple of my favorites, so I'll have to be patient I guess.

If it makes you feel any better, I can't hardly smell Black Aoud unless I directly put my nose up to my arm. Lime Aoud is stronger to me. Santal Noble is very strong. Possibly you are experiencing olfactory fatigue. You might try the old coffee bean method.

BLACK AOUD?!? Yes, I do feel better.

    I don't think it's fatigue...hardly smelled it when I put it on.

Unless the perfumed court messed up my sample, I am trying to understand what all the hubbub concerning Black Aoud is all about.

Cool Re: Santal Noble issue- anosmic?

I'm not sure if the old coffee bean trick would work so well here.
As Santal Noble, even in the vintage variant, contained coffee . . .

Knowing StylinLA I'm certain he got the vintage version.

    Four nutty ideas:

1.Try it when it's really cold
    2. Try it when it's really hot
    3. Do not spray on the hands, wrists or neck
    4. Ask your friends to describe what they smell.

    Cheers,

I forgot about the coffee notes but figured it would be worth a shot. Spraying it on the chest works for me. It will present itself randomly throughout the day or night. Try that.

This is common and happens with many fragrances. Another among many reasons why quick reviews are often highly inaccurate.

Smell it every day for the next week to ten days and see what happens. It will get stronger and stronger. Just another olfactory trip. The nose can smell more than ten thousand things and it often has to adjust receptor sites in order to do so. It can take well over a year or years to smell certain fragrances more completely, no matter how good your nose is, or how good a review makes it sound.

The newer Santal Noble uses mainly synthetic sandalwood and that in itself could throw you off. It's more of a pale, wood varnish smell than the complexity of real Mysore sandalwood or even the much simpler Australian varieties. It won't be long before they just go the lavender x cedar route to get the sandalwood smell. Santal Noble stopped using Mysore sandalwood in 97 or so.

“Perfume is decidedly not about two things: it isn’t about memory and it isn’t about sex. Perfume is about beauty and intellect,”.........“A perfume is a message in a bottle—not a smell—and the message is written by the perfumer and read by the person who smells it.”

No Mario, it's the new stuff and I have no frame of reference on the vintage.

Pluran, your thoughts may ring true. I go through some variation of this with a lot scents. This one is just more pronounced.

Tried a little squirt this AM and picked up some. I just have to "learn" to smell it. Same thing happened when I've tested MKK. I went through something similar with Habit Rouge too which is now one of my faves. Couldn't even smell HR first two or three times I wore it. Odd.

It is not a bad bottle, two women and date last night told me it was pounding. Date hated it, but she hates everything. It will take a few wearings evidently.

What's the general consensus on this beast for number of sprays? Been using 2-3 but think I'm gonna cut back to 1 straight to the chest.

Boy, I couldn't tell you. I used four and didn't smell anything. But outside input would indicate go easy with it.

This is one scent that defined sillage as a wake behind, a ball of scent around me. Everyone but me could smell it! (they liked it, good thing) Me? I thought I had under-applied. It apparently left a trail of scent everywhere I went!

Dogs, it was serioulsy f-ed up, dude. Completely scent blind to it! I have to "learn" to smell it I gather. Happens to me a lot. This has been the worst one.

I think so. I have a guess that the shift in so many scents to many synthetics has something to do with this. After reading Pluran's comments above, I realized that there are probably a few scents I've sampled where I've run into this same problem.
