you could join a decant/sample swap
I'm not looking to spend $3+ per sample at the perfume court.
I just want a ton of samples, the standard retail samples. A bunch. I'm sick of going to the store, only able to smell 2-4 at a time on my skin.
I need time. And I'd rather just randomly put on a sample before I head out and see how it works..instead of sniffing around all day
Ebay is a great source. Some sellers will group 10 or more samples into an auction lot. Search under cologne sample lot and see what pops up.
It should average you less than 2 dollars a sample.
Shop on ebay for samples. There are good deals for those starting out. For people who have tested lots of stuff, less so.
+1 Ebay, you can get a lot of about 25-30 for about a buck each.
join a swap box... Great way to smell a million things, pick up a few new ones, and especially get rid of that pile of half used ones.
I've done one through both StyleForum and Badger&Blade.
PS - I had an idea a while back, basically a large standard sample set of say 50 frags, 1-2 ml each, sold as a group for an beginner just to ramp them up to the most commonly talked about ones. Would sell for probably $50-60, ie the cost of 1-2 bottles but you get to smell the most commonly talked about ones. thoughts?

Most of the time I am very proud of the Basenotes community. Time after time I have witnessed the thoughtfulness, empathy & genuine friendship that members of this community extend to others - oldtimers & newcomers alike. There are other times, however, when egos get the upper hand and civility goes out the window. My philosophy is that I won't say anything here that I would not say if you were standing in front of me. Welcome to Basenotes, each and every one of us. ~ TwoRoads
+2 ebay. Sample lots are rather cheap compared to Perfumed Court and the like.
1. sample swaps (pay shipping only)
2. eBay auctions
3. TPC - Sample Grab Bags - seriously, you can get niche but random stuff for under $2 each.
