In the end I might try and decide for 10 at the maximum. Real gems to me that is. But....till then I'd say around 22.....altough I'm probably gonna mostly do sampling and not buy so many bottles I might stay lower all the way through anyway. ;-)

Here's my idea of "normal": A normal person is one who goes about his life taking thought for his actions and therefore proceeding along a path which does not often lead him to contemplate what may seem normal to others. The pursuit of the good and the beautiful justifies itself without need of explanation. How do you understand καλὸς κἀγαθός? Handsome and brave, resolute and upstanding, or if you must be literal, beautiful and good. Whatever flows from this ideal is good and appropriate, measured and laudable.

What are "how many" and "how much" to me? It is rather a question of "how good" and "how admirable."
And I thank you JaimeB for your post. Reason to re-read a thoughtful post that so clearly furthers discussion. It's good to have the furthering of discussion as a standard.

I posted my response to this thread to my Basenotes blog, and a couple of people have already responded there. If you'd like to take a look at a discussion about fragrance and consumerism, you can find the post here: http://www.basenotes.net/entries/184...n-Have?bt=4394.

Consider this, though: it might get a little philosophical, so if thinking seriously bores or tires you out...

The term "normal" can be debated till the end of time, but I suspect that Vulcan uses it to simply mean an average Joe. If you were to take a random sample of men, how many fragrances would the majority of them have. And I suspect that, by a huge margin, the answer would be 0 or 1. With those owning 1 fragrance probably having received it as a gift.

As for how many "he should have" as the questions asks - well he shouldn't feel obligated to have any specific amount, just the right amount to be able to enjoy, be that 1 or 1000.

For the sake of smelling nice and being able to wear an appropriate scent for each occasion, you will need at least three fragrances and I don't see how someone would need more than six.

Well, we might examine a historical precedent. Abraham Lincoln was once asked, "How long should a man's penis be?" and he famously replied, "Long enough to reach the ground." Presumably he was talking about guys standing up. So I guess guys were, like, really well hung back then or something.

So, by the same token, normal guys should have enough fragrances to reach the ground. If you live on a high-numbered floor in a tall building, and stacked them all up, that could be like thousands.

So there. Don't ask this question again.

So what the hell are we talking about right now, JamieB?

    The answer is:

it doesn't really matter. As long as we get the chance to mention terms like kalokagathia people will hopefully think that we're intelligent and well educated - philosophers even!

    That would be super great.
At this point, what can I say? I am sorry we disagree. I don't intend to continue to participate in this type of conversation. I apologize to the other Basenotes members for my part in having provoked such a heated discussion. I'm done with it now.

To Schweitzer: I don't know who you think you're dealing with, but one thing I can tell you: even in academic polemic, I am not accustomed to this type of response, and do not wish to become accustomed to it. I have my own opinion of you, but I will refrain from mentioning it. Instead, I will politely ask you not to respond to me or my opinions again.

I'm pretty sure that's not exactly how Socrates would have responded.

However, most of my friends only have 1 or 2. The most cologne that any one of my friends has is like 4 bottles.

In the real world 5-6 tops.. average is 2-3 I'd say though.

For a young college Basenoter, I'd say 15-20 is normal. I personally have 20 bottles, 10 decants, few samples.. and my friends think I'm weird lol. But age really matters with this discussion...

Personally I don't wear half of my collection (either blind buys, bottles I used to love but now hate, or bottles that fit in the same category with another bottle I have.. and that other fragrance does it better.) I plan to narrow down by collection to just 10 gem bottles someday.

I believe every man should own at the very least, 3 colognes.

    1. Every day cologne. For work, hanging out with friends, etc...AKA the signature scent.

    2. Date/going out scent. When you want to seduce...I mean impress your date or get some attention on a Friday night.

    3. Special occasion. When you need to attend a wedding, birthday party, or propose to the woman you love, and you want a scent to be as special as that moment. Afterall, scent is the strongest sense tied to memory.
