Default Jean-Claude Ellena on Art in Perfumery

Mr. Ellena shares his thoughts on Art in Perfumery at PERFUMism:
Historically, there are two schools of thought at large about perfume-making and, even though I appreciate the former, my style is distinctly distanced from both: From the end of the 19th century until the 1970s, perfumery was bourgeois, just like middle-class cooking, indulging in complicated, full-bodied “recipes” that produced “heavy” offerings. So Hermes does not run market tests as they distort his original vision. It's unsurprising people would have this affect, but interesting nonetheless!

What are "leftovers?" Too bad he didn't provide an example. I simply don't believe that he just creates what he wants and that is the end of the process, but it doesn't matter to me because I don't like any of his frags anyway. The notion of "art" here is interesting, especially if we compare it to something like a painting. A painting can be disturbing and yet still match the colors of the room in a way that makes it decorative, and at least for me, a painting is easy to ignore, unless it is large and there is a color clash. With frags, if you can't stand the smell, you can't wear it, so I think there is a practical aspect to frags that "trumps" the "artistic," at least to all but a few people.
