Not many people love Chanel Gardenia but I do...Luca Turin calls it an 'airport floral' - right- if only all airports smelt of Chanel .............

Also, good fragrance knowledge or not if something smells good it smells good regardless of how many people think so.
So AdG is good because 95% of the non-Basenotes population loves it, but something can be good regardless of how many people like it?

    Way to contradict yourself.

Ultimately, and in reality, I think Basenotes inherently approves any fragrances you like.

Hugo Boss Dark Blue - for dating and clubbing, can't go wrong with it
Boss in motion Black - casual, dating, gym, work, it's just great
Azzaro Silver Black/Onyx - retro, masculine, got ˝what are you wearing?˝ so many times
Cerruti 1881 Black - sweet oriental with great longevity and sillage
Cerruti Pour Homme - spicy aromatic, seductive, got many compliments
Hugo by Hugo Boss - bashed, but really not all that bad
Davidoff Silver Shadow Private - really nice oriental for romantic occasions
Bruno Banani Magic Man - really not bad fragrance, you'd be surprised, could never tell it's a cheapo!

Egoiste Platinum seems to get bashed by a lot of basenoters, seem to favor Egoiste instead. EP is one of my all-time favs, Egoiste makes me feel ill.

Platinum is so vile on my skin and to my nose...but it doesn't mean it is not a unique and quality fragrance. Egoiste is beautiful.

I don't care what fragrances Basenotes approves of. The idea is absurd anyway, although many people are desperate for a sense of belonging.

I just care about what I like.

I am glad to see all the ones I had in mind -- 'cause it makes me feel all Borg-like and assimilated -- mentioned! Those are:

    Floris Elite
    Azzaro Onyx
    Platinum Egoiste
    Viktor & Rolf Antidote

Although in regards to the spirit of the OP's question:

Versace - Green Jeans (this is the one that led me to basenotes)
Lanvin - Vetyver (nice clean all-day scent)
Azzaro - Pure Vetiver (strong clean masculine white floral)
Azzaro - Pure Lavende ( strong musty lavender & tobacco - to me)
