Default Yohji Homme by Yohji Yamamoto (1999) - BLIND BUY?

I can't seem to get my hands on a sample or decant of this stuff, but there are a few tester bottles out there for purchase. So, is it a good blind-buy?

I'm not sure if Eau Noire or Sable are close in comparison as Yohji Homme doesn't sport any immortelle note. More like an airy coffee & rum to me. It's good but really weak in the longevity dept. That's why I unloaded mine off. Btw also try the female version Yohji if you can.

I wouldn't go in for a blind buy of it. It is an excellent gourmand influenced aromatic fougere but, as Dullah pointed out, the longevity isn't much and I find it a touch too shy and retiring.

If you love everything licorice, then if you get it for a good price you can always swap it off if you happen to dislike it. I found Lolita Lempicka au Masculin Fraicheur to be close enough (I actually like it more), so I sold off my bottle of YH. Also, if you are a "power frag" guy it might be a bit weak for you.

Thanks for all the input. I don't mind scents with modest sillage, but longevity is another thing. It's gotta last at least 6-8 hours for me to truly appreciate it.

I think you'd get decent longevity if you sprayed at least a few times, but I've also seen that some people have skin chemistry that eats up a frag. They were getting a few hours with several sprays whereas it was lasting 8+ on me with one spray.

Well, I'm still hoping to get a decant or sample from somebody. If not, hopefully I can work out a swap for a full bottle and, barring that, maybe I'll take a chance and do a blind buy...

I'd consider it a safe blind buy only in that you're certain to be able to unload the bottle easily if you don't like it. I have an issue with anosmia/habituation with this scent: I can't detect it on myself after ten or fifteen minutes, no matter how much I apply.

Given some of the previous posts, it would appear I'm not alone in this...

I had the same problem in cooler weather with YH... it just went POOF. In warmer weather though, at least on my skin, it stays around a little longer. Not an all-day delight, but 4-5 hours I'd say.

I've had a bottle for many years. My wife bought it for me right when it was initially released. It's not bad stuff, a bit heavy on the licorice notes for my taste. Reasonably complex and rich. But the best feature is the cool bottle. Overall, not an essential acquisition, not a bad choice either.

Many years ago, it was a big hit on this forum. I think it's really good, but thought it was only good for three or four hours. Others claimed it lasted a lot longer on them.

Don't blind buy it. Its average, nothing that special. But I am sure the guys who do like it really do enjoy it. Everyone has their own favorites. Either way, it is very much of its time. But Windycity, since you only like niche fragrances and claim yourself to be very picky, why would you think Yohji Homme would work for you ?
Seeking: Bottles/decants : of Feeling Man, Gucci pour Homme, Essence of John Galliano, Nicole Miller (vintage), Opium pour Homme, Oxford & Cambridge, Concentré D'Orange Verte...etc.

I reckon he's about to find out, without blind buying it. (we swapped decants) Will be interested to see if it's "meh" or "yeah!"

I don't know that it will, but I figured I might dig it because I love New Haarlem, as well as gourmand-ish scents like Eau Noire and Sables.

Thanks for the link, but I try to stay away from TPC unless I have no other option. They offer a nice service, but I find their prices to be objectionable.
