Wink OK... I finally "got" Egoiste!

For some, it's Kouros. For others, it's some obscure niche. For me, it's Egoiste. Well, it took me the longest time, but after nearly three years, I finally "got" Egoiste.

Well, the last time I tried Chanel's Egoiste, back in 2006 at a duty-free shop on the Canada-US border, I remember that it was all the rage of Basenoters due to its relative inaccessibility compared to its Platinum brother and "how wonderful it smelled". So, I sprayed it on, and I thought "Yuck! Menthol rub and old guy!". (I rushed to the bathroom to scrub it off, and ended up buying Black XS instead.) Still, I was determined to retry Egoiste someday.

However, what goes around comes around, and the Egoiste rage has died down somewhat. Given my newfound love of woody orientals (case in point: Straight to Heaven being my HG), I decided to swap a sample each in the "Spray it Forward" game... one sample of M7 went to arwen_elf (she wanted to see how it compared to Tom Ford's Oud Wood...), and in return, I got a sample of Egoiste (she also threw in a sample each of He Wood and Cacharel's late, lamented Nemo, which I'll be reviewing later.)

So, I put on the sample today, and I thought... Wow! I guess the raves are real! Maybe the tester bottle at the duty-free was bad or my nose has changed, but what I'm getting now is a great woody oriental with a massive kick of sandalwood, amber, and vanilla. Not sure if it's bottleworthy, given all the other good woody orientals in my collection, but it's darn well close

Good for you, bro. Funny how it can take some time for a scent to mature. Good on ya!

A staple in my wardrobe and, still, one of my current favorite's. It smells almost Guerlainesque - if that makes any sense.

However, I have yet to try Egoiste Concentree which is supposed to be Egoiste with the kinks worked out. I can't even imagine that bc Egoiste seems perfect as it. Anyway, should be getting my 5ML decant in the mail tomorrow - may start a thread on the differences.

Good to hear! By the way, did Arwen_Elf ever tell you what she thought of her Oud Wood and M7 comparison? I'm also curious about your opinions of the differences and similarities of the two Egoistes are TheAttorney.

MFfan310, I thought I should add an interesting anecdote: I remember reading (though not where) an interview with Killian Hennesy and he said he'd never forget the day he really overapplied a fragrance (when discussing how to apply fragrances (again, he claimed, "not to the wrists" as that was in his mind a feminine gesture... blah)), and that fragrance was Egoiste by Chanel.

Have you guys noticed that on eBay, there are 20 bottles of Egoiste Platinum for every bottle of Egoiste?

It's still truly excellent stuff. I wish I could try the original formulation.

Thanks to MFfan 310 for the very generous sample of M7.
I wrote my impressions on the SOTD thread.

I am glad you are liking Egoiste. It is a very special fragrance in my wardrobe

I suspect Platinum outsells Egoiste by twenty-to-one. This is not to disparage Egoiste, however, which is lovely, but no doubt an acquired taste.

I've absolutely fallen in love with the stuff (especially weird from a 20 y/o guy I suppose), I'm a woods guy at heart and it's beautiful woods vanilla and some spice thrown in. I've tried Platinum Egoiste and it does absolutely nothing on me, and what I can smell I'm not crazy about. Anyway, I've got about 5ml from a generous SA at Sephora that I'm wearing, after that I'm gonna have to get a bottle.

The original Egoiste was actually called Bois Noir but it was discontinued then brought back under the name "Egoiste" in 1990 (see Griff's excellent review of Bois Noir in the BN Directory). Imagine getting a bottle of Bois Noir - oh man talk about scent porn.

I too, took a while to 'get' Egoiste but when I did it's now a solid part of my wardrobe. The very first Chanel scent I fell in love with. And, like nthny mentioned, this scent works when under applied. Too much is not a good thing.

Referring back to the comment about Egoiste on Ebay, that may be because Chanel have very much restricted outlets selling Egoiste, whereas Platinum Egoiste is available everywhere.

Of the two, I have to admit, I prefer PE as it is more versatile in terms of wearability. Egoiste I have to be in the right mood to wear. I still think it's a wonderful fragrance though.

Egoiste is and will be classic, I will probably never love and use it as much and as often as Antaeus, but it's still a masterpiece.

For some reason, my skin soaks up Egoiste so it behaves rather tamely (in fact, too much so) on me, instead of being the sillage beast that many people experience. Hence I never have to worry about overapplying it.

It's absolutely beautiful stuff. Initially I had some doubts when I first sniffed it at an airport duty-free shop, but I went with my instincts (and the advice of other BNers) and bought a bottle on the spot. I've never regretted it since.

Egoiste is a masterfuly blended masterpiece. It`s a pity the designer-houses don`t make them like this enymore. Egoiste is (IMO) the best designer scent out there, side by side with Hermes Bel Ami and Equipage. One of the best!

I took a quick spray of Egoiste on my hand at a department store. I immediately started whiffing, and it was spicy and sweet like a cinnamon candy apple. Then, at the skin level, the sweetness eased and some tobacco-like bitterness was noticeable. I wondered 'where is the sillage? This is fading quickly' but it wasn't really. As I walked down the street into a headwind, a great fragrance billowed around me. That was a much more unified and smooth effect compared to the crazy development at skin level. That being said, I think it leaves a lot to be desired from the wearer's point of view (point of smell?). There seems to be no center to it--it wanders around a lot without ever coming to a point. I like the spicy sweet cinnamon and similar notes, but there is also something a bit sickly in there too. Again, that may not be noticeable in terms of the sillage, but it is just a kind of disturbing note that is very close to the skin. I suppose I might need to test this more extensively, but at the moment, my feeling is 'interesting and well-done, but not for me.' Just putting in another point of view.

Congratulations MFfan310! Chanel Egoiste is one of my biggest favourites and it took time also for me to "get it". But then when I realized how great frag Egoiste is, it was totally mindblowing! Egoiste's drydown is one of the best that I know, especially in cold weather. The real Chanel along with Antaeus.
