Exclamation A Gentlemans Fragrance for After 5pm.

The term gentleman once denoted a man of education and culture; one who still practices the rules of chivalry. I think that many here present likely have those qualities and for them I ask what fragrance, for wear after 5, would best express who you are? What think you, gentlemen?

Ladies since a gentleman would never exclude a lady from his conversation, ladies I ask of you, what fragrance expresses who you are?

As for me? My signature scent is Mitsouko. My alternate fragrances; L'Heure Bleue, Habit Rouge Beau Cavalier, and Chanel Coromandel.

I find it to be everything you described. I have a 6ml sample that I only use for special/formal occasions. It will be a full bottle purchase soon.

Well, I suppose the practice of any sort of code of conduct can become doctrinaire and pretentious. Standards of dress can easily get tyrannical and silly but then again if someone is really exploring the question of how to behave appropriately (and there are good uses for the word), helping them find a few guidelines seems sensible and compassionate. For me the question of how to be a gentleman after 5PM has some real interest and relevance when so many of us cause needless discomfort to others without intending or even knowing it. Seems to me that one of the things a gentleman does after 5PM is wear fragrance quietly enough that other people can taste their food and hear the concert rather than smelling the guy behind them to the left. Many of us have to learn self-awareness by rule, and so asking straight questions about how to wear fragrance like a gentleman might just as easily be humility as pretension.
The citrus eau de cologne seems really well-suited to evening wear. I'm not thinking of the sort of occasion where you're with intimates and your job is to show up as fully as possible as your sweet, rocking self but when you're truly in public. Eau Sauvage, Acqua di Parma Colonia, Monsieur de Givenchy, Chanel Pour Monsieur, that kind of thing. And probably a great many other things, too, worn quietly.

Why not just say "sensible fragrance" or quiet, discreet etc. then?
The term Gentleman has lots of other things attached to it, and I find it hard to identify with that, while I have no problems with being sensible.

Well said, Strollyourlobster. When it comes to the gentleman's style of fragrance-wearing the watchwords are 'discreet' and 'tasteful', with due consideration for your companions and neighbors. A discreet fragrance may invite your date to sit closer to get a better sniff if she so desires but when you wear a fragrance a little too 'loudly', you can't expect them to leave the room or sit further from the dining table if they find the scent disagreeable. Just because you love a particular scent doesn't mean others will too.

+1 to Esencia Loewe, Bois de Portugal & Domenico Caraceni 1913, all of which are very dignified if worn in the right doses.
