    the ingredient that smells like barbershop . . . could be oakmoss, treemoss, geranium accords, and powder. if you really want barbershop in a bottle, get Pinaud Clubman original aftershave lotion (which doubles as a cologne).

    as for powerhouses, Yatagan by Caron, Quorum by Antonio Puig is another. Yatagan is brilliant, there's nothing like it. Quorum is an incense/tobacco monster that can be had for a tenner and is anything but cheap smelling. Look into things like Opium (for women) and other orientals as well.

    as for powerhouses, Yatagan by Caron, Grey Flannel by Geoffrey Beene are two that spring to mind. Quorum by Antonio Puig is another. Yatagan is brilliant, there's nothing like it. Grey Flannel is the same. Quorum is an incense/tobacco monster that can be had for a tenner and is anything but cheap smelling. Look into things like Opium (for women) and other orientals as well.

    Good advice, that. I was thinking the same ones. I'll add Aramis, and Jacomo de Jacomo, and also the crazy One Man Show by Jacques Bogart. There are plenty more, but my brain is fried tonight and fortunately there are other members who can add to the list.

    If you want barbershop, this is great. Smells like spicey Barbasol. Pianaud Clubman which is available everywhere is inexpensive, actually not a bad scent, and the ULTIMATE barbershop scent. You wear this, you feel like you just got out of the chair.

    A solid and super-cheap barbershop "power frag" is Lomani (1987). It starts off with the fougere accord (which is the crux of the "barbershop" smell) and eventually transitions into a grassy amber. And the good thing about that is it doesn't smell "old" at that point. If it's too strong (or if any of these are) you can dilute them with vodka or perfumer's alcohol, which I had to do with One Man Show.

    Polo
    Drakkar Noir
    Tsar
    Boucheron PH
    Kouros
    Giorgio of Beverly Hills
    Aramis
    Z-14
    and some others that don't immediately come to mind. If it wasn't around in the '80s (or late '70s for the trailblazers) then it isn't a powerhouse.

    Quite a formidable list of powerhouses, darren1.

    Like Aromi said, you will enjoy exploring the Powerhouse Lovers Group forum here.

    The main note that gives Azzaro (and Rive Gauche pour Homme) its standout babershop scent is anise or star anise.

    I have van cleef and arpels pour homme and quorum and they both don't last more than 2 hrs. I purchased them from fragrancenet. I use 5 sprays, 2 on chest, 1 on neck, 2 on shirt. Yatagan lasts 5 hours, Terre and guerlain vetiver last 6-7 hours and kouros lasts 8+ hours.

    I have been running on Havana the last few days. It is the sum of all the barber shops de ma vie .....; not as powerhouse as straight Aramis though.

    Almost to many to be mentioned here, but I always wondered myself, are powerhouse fragrances strictly limited to the decade of the 80s or does it include fragrances from almost any decade, provided powerhouse notes (leathery, barbershoppy etc.) are there?

    Not sure it counts as a powerhouse, but for a barber shop scent try Versace Black Jeans. You can get it really cheap on Amazon, and it "feels" high quality. I'm not sure exactly which notes below combine to form the barber shop accord.

    Top Notes
    * Petitgrain, Rosemary, Juniper, Geranium, Iris,

    Middle Notes
    * Nutmeg, Ginger, Vetiver

    Base Notes
    * Patchouli, Sandalwood, Musk

    I think that powerhouses tend to come from the 80's but there are some which have that vibe which are before or after. For example I think Dunhill for Men (1934) is a proto-powerhouse albeit one of the more mild mannered ones. I can't think of anything recent which might be a powerhouse, that's probably a good thread for the powerhouse forum.

    I think they tend to be strong - often aggressively so - rather than have a certain accord. So some might say YSL PH Haute Concentrate (a citrus) might be a powerhouse, some might not. In terms of strength, I think it is. But probably all would agree that Quorum is a powerhouse.

    Fragrances with tremendous sillage and longevity to which I would personally add the presence of some notes: geranium, lavender and aromatics in their top notes and oak / tree moss, vetiver, musk and patchouli in their base notes.
