Default Question about purchasing used fragrances

I am thinking about purchasing a used fragrance (Tangerine Vert by Miller Harris). Do I need to make sure it is not too old? I have heard different opinions about whether fragrances can go bad or not...how old would you consider too old?

    Thanks for your help!

Most fragrances don't spoil easily... If they are kept in a cool and dark place, they can keep for many, many decades.

But I do think citrus notes may go off sooner than others. I recall reading that the Osmothèque recommends a cooler storage temperature for citrus than for non-citrus perfumes.

Also, a year and a half ago when I was first considering buying L'Artisan Fleur d'Oranger 2007 and tested it/obtained a decanted sample from a store in CT that had kept a tester on display, I found the the top notes were damaged, compared with samples I bought from L'Artisan and Beautycafe. (And if you think about it, this was created in 2007, so it wasn't even so very old.) I almost didn't buy the fragrance at all based on that sample. Fortunately I retested with other samples, or I would never have known what it really smelled like.

So I think the big question is, was it kept out of the light?
