Default Open Roger & Gallet ...thoughts ....info

Besides the review what more info can be provided on this fragrance. I see it is not listed on their official site is it still in production? I see a lot of bottles for sale on the Internet could there possibly be that much overstock available ?

Personally think it's one of their best scents. Have this but haven't worn it in a very long time. I remember it as being a very sweet
scent. Can be gotten now at a very good price.

From what I remember, it's like a softer Quorum (as in vintage Quorum), minus the "fresh"/citrus aspects of vintage Quorum.

This one sounds interesting. Care to give me some feedback about a couple notes?

    1. Lots of reviews mention soapiness .. is this an iris-violet ionone type of thing?

    2. Also many mention a similarity to Quorum which is a leather powerhouse. Does Open have birch tar to your nose?

    Thanks guys.

Agree. I remember being around guys wearing Open in the late 1980's and noticing the similarity. Not exactly "copying" Quorum, but a first-cousin relationship. Perhaps a little less of that sharp lavender tang than Quorum in the top notes.

I wear Open. I find it to be perhaps the driest smelling fragrance I've ever tried. It's purely herbal and woody, with a lot of clove-like smells and vetiver. I think it's excellent.

I smell a small similarity to Quorum, but it isn't heavy and brutish like Quorum.

Looks like I'm going to have to risk a blind buy after all. If it's free of birch tar, I can guarantee I'll dig it. Thanks shamu.

Nope. No leather or birch tar in Open from the pyramid or from what I can smell.

It's dry and herbal, but not particularly green smelling, though. It reminds me a lot of Equipage, only more herbal and stronger.

Thanks shamu, what about the "soapiness"? Is it an ionone thing like in Musk Monsieur? I ask because this thread compares the two, and I am not a fan of that one: http://www.basenotes.net/threads/215...ht=gallet+open

Or is it a case of lavender & moss causing the soapy comments?

    Typical "old school" fougere" soapiness.

    shamu1 is right.

I own this too and it is an indeed very dry woody and herbal frag of the highest quality!
One mentioned in the beginning that it's sweet but it is not sweet at all! I also don't see that much similarities with Quorum which is way more brutal and less refined and a "frag on its own".
The soapiness in this fragrance is only in the opening and of a high level as welll! It vanishes after like 20 mins.

For me it's a safe scent, which is pretty versatile (also for formal occasions) with a non-offensive very gentlemanly smell of a high level.
Sillage and longevity is way more than average!
Really recommended if you like dry woody scents! Thumbs up!

Thanks guys. Looks like this is a blind buy for me. Appreciate the heads up -- not easy to find big herbal masculines without sweetness or leather.

Ah, try, when you can Jil Sander for men (the fifi-winner one from 1998). Also an excellent dry woody frag without leather and sweetness imo and huge sillage and longevity! Also perfect for summer as it has a kind of freshness in it! I guess you will like that one too if u don't already!

Haha yeah I am hypersensitive to birch tar for sure Bigs. I will report back here about Open.

Jil Sander Men sounds rather interesting, thanks for the heads up. I am not usually a fan of incense in fragrances for wearing, so I'll probably hold off on a blind buy until I can test it in a shop or something.

    lol!

I just hope he'll spray some on his arm to give it a little test as well.......
I think he will like it! I don't notice incense in JS for men...........

@Yes, here u can test it everywhere!
Give it a serious go as well with a tester if possible!

    Ok, enough off topic!

My bottle arrived today in the mail at first sniff l love the soapy scent. To me this reminds me of a very expensive men's soap that is heavy oval and pure white.

Yes, true, but that soapy smell will dissapear and leave you with a real sophisticated manly woody, dry drydown!

Okay I've got a spray of Open on my arm. From the outset I get smoky herbs. I have to say I am getting a lot of moss and some birch tar too -- Bigsly was right. It's typical smoky wintergreen to my nose. Lighter than the biggest frags of the period like Quorum or One Man Show, but still birchy.

I don't register the typical "brow-beetled" (love that term) aromatic fougere drydown as "soapy" at all. Ionones are what smell soapy to me, and Open doesn't veer in that direction.

Open is very soapy on me and quite linear. That's what dominates till I get a woody, little bit mossy dry down. I'm not fond of soapy frags.

shamu states what I've found: woody-herbal, fairly spicy. Dry, substantial.

I love Open! I get the same sort of response as you have described. It is very soapy for a long time before it gets to the dry, woody base. I agree that there are some similarities with Quorum, but I prefer Open for its less aggressive nature and its soapier quality.

There is an Open Gold version, but I didn't like it at all when I tried it. It is quite different than the regular Open.
