Cool Re: 5 greatest male fragrances of all time

    At this fickle moment:

OK, I'll list 5 and ONE reviewer who wrote about it with wisdom or panache or--

    1. Vintage Tabarome Reviewer: Diamondflame
    2. Cuba Reviewer: Hillaire
    3. Habit Rouge Reviewer: Scentemental
    4. Dunhill '34: Reviewer: No, I can't choose just one: Off-Scenter, foetidus and the_good_life
    5. Muscs Kublai Khan Reviewer: Me.

    Honorable Mention

    A. Patou PH--Yes, of course it should have been #1! But I refrained from listing frags that are only rumored to be available on eBay, or on a parallel universe for 20+ bars of gold pressed latinum: Reviewer: Griff (prose) or pluran (verse)

    B. Havana--Why bother? They brought it back as good as ever and if you haven't snagged a bottle of this or of Havana Reserva, you're hopeless. Think you'll live forever? Think this will continue to be always available without a reformulation? Listen up! Juggle hand grenades for fun if you must, but don't take unnecessary chances. Buy this NOW!

    C. Antaeus and Egoiste---Once upon a time there was a house called Chanel who fell on hard times and began the evil process of reformulatiion on the side-- Do hurry before they reformulate these masterpieces into junk!
(Remember what happened with Nicole Miller?)
Reviewers: lauerent for Antaeus, and Tigs (tigrushka ) and looking glass for Egoiste.

    D. Zino Reviewer: tvlampboy

    E. Blenheim Bouquet Reviewer: Naed_ Nitram with a little help from Winston Churchill.

    Cheers,

(and thanks to all of our wonderful reviewers)

    Mario

    greatest masculines for me:

    Guerlain - DERBY
    Ralph Lauren - POLO CREST
    Ralph Lauren - SAFARI
    Guy Laroche - DRAKKAR NOIR
    Hermes - EAU D'HERMES

    but;
Yves Saint Laurent - JAZZ PRESTIGE
    Aramis - JHL
    Guerlain - MOUCHOIR DE MONSIEUR
    Hermes - TERRE D'HERMES
    Dior - FAHRENHEIT

    are superb too.

To me there is no creed production deserves a title of "greatest of all time". They are overpriced for their quality and overhyped IMO. Some hermes, guerlain and cdg perfumes have much more quality for much cheeper prices than creeds. A superb perfume don't need to be super expensive or niche to be "superb". - I'm no creed hater -

My top list isn't ultra masculine as some scents are unisex/feminine, but here they are:

    1. Nasomatto - Silver Musk
    2. Creed - Green Irish Tweed
    3. Montale - Black Aoud
    4. Guerlain - Spiritueuse Double Vanille
    5. Geoffrey Beene - Grey Flannel

I saw that Silver Musk is also your SOTD. The description from LuckyScent has made me so curious that I'm going to have to order a sample. Does this resemble any other fragrance to you? I'm just curious to see what is so wonderful about something so vague. haha I'll probably love it.

People have compared it to Bvlgari Pour Homme - so I actually bought it thinking I would save a lot of money. I can see the similarities but they do not compare. Bvlgari Pour Homme has a lot more wood and is very harsh/bitter compared to Silver Musk. I really can't describe Silver Musk with words. It's the most beautiful scent I've ever encountered. It's a very clean out of the shower scent, but it's a lot more than that. When I close my eyes and inhale (yes!) it's like travelling to another world. I get tons of things going on in my brain. A wave of nostalgy and hard to describe feelings just overload my brain. In the drydown I get a wonderful clean musk, mixed with some cotton candy, a flower field, soap, an air of vanilla, a very faint menthol vibe and something reminding me of faint burning pipe tobacco. I know, the official note is just musk. I think there's something in it that tricks the brain to make up smells that you like but isn't physically there. It's a masterpiece!

I had a relative who was a pipe smoker, and somehow it reminds me of him. To me Silver Musk is like he just got out of the shower, dressed in a freshly laundered suit. Just finished a smoke session on his pipe, and put a menthol pastille in his mouth.

    Green Irish Tweed
    Chanel Antaeus

IMO, these represent the best of each respective House above.

    And these come very close:

    Ralph Lauren Polo
Chanel Egoiste (original - not Platinum)
    L'Instant de Guerlain Pour Homme
    Aramis
    Chanel Pour Monsieur

OK, before this thread gets out of control I thought I'd start a tally. Since I'm a n00b, I have been on the lookout for a definitive must try list and while I have found a lot of individual opinions, I haven't seen a list made by a vote or consensus of all the fantastic noses here, other than the famous sticky, of course. This thread is light on the sweet gourmands, which might garner female compliments, but are perhaps not high on a man's favorite list.

I counted people's top 5s only. Apologies to those who posted more, but I am but a man, and if there is no limit what is to stop people from posting top 20s and 50s?

Yves Saint Laurent - Kouros 16
Creed - Green Irish Tweed 14
    Ralph Lauren - Polo 12
Chanel - Chanel pour Monsieur 9
Christian Dior - Eau Sauvage 9
    Guerlain - Habit Rouge 9
    Procter & Gamble - Old Spice 8
    Christian Dior - Fahrenheit 7
Giorgio Armani - Acqua di Giò pour Homme 6
    Aramis - Aramis 6
    Guerlain - Derby 5
Jean Patou - Patou pour Homme 5
    Guerlain - Vetiver 5
    Davidoff - Cool Water 4
    Chanel - Égoïste 4
    Knize - Knize Ten 4
Azzaro - Azzaro pour Homme 3
    Hermès - Bel Ami 3
Alfred Dunhill - Dunhill for Men (1934) 3
    Hermès - Eau d'Hermès 3
Geoffrey Beene - Grey Flannel 3
Jean Paul Gaultier - Le Mâle 3
Guerlain - Mouchoir de Monsieur 3
    Davidoff - Zino Davidoff 3
    Thierry Mugler - A*Men / Angel Men 2
Amouage - Amouage Gold Men 2
    Chanel - Antaeus 2
    Montale - Black Aoud 2
Chanel - Bois des Îles 2
Creed - Bois du Portugal 2
    Fabergé - Brut 2
Bulgari - Bulgari pour Homme 2
Caron - Caron Pour un Homme 2
Christian Dior - Dior Homme 2
Guy Laroche - Drakkar Noir 2
Giorgio Beverly Hills - Giorgio for Men 2
    Givenchy - Givenchy Gentleman 2
    Boucheron - Jaïpur Homme 2
    Amouage - Lyric Man 2
    Creed - Millésime Impérial 2
Parfums de Nicolaï - New York 2
Yves Saint Laurent - Opium pour Homme 2
Jean Patou - Patou pour Homme Privé 2
    Rochas - Rochas Man 2
Creed - Silver Mountain Water 2
    Hermès - Terre d'Hermès 2
    Creed - Vintage Tabarome 2

I pasted only ones with votes of 2 or more, but here is a link to a google spreadsheet that anyone can edit to keep the tally going.

I like it as well but I rarely wear it. Very long lasting and clean. While it's expensive, you can easily get away with one spray to the chest in the AM and smell it until late evening - even longer. I think it's the tobacco ash note that makes it difficult for me to wear. But yes, it has a magical quality to it and is very much worth trying.
