    I want to play along!
In my limited knowledge so far:

    Creed Green Irish Tweed
Caron Yatagan (I can't understand why it doesn't appear on more lists, a friend of mine says "it smells like a real man", and I agree)
    Lalique Encre Noire
    Serge Lutens Ambre Sultan
    Montale Aoud Lime
Honorable mention to Amouage Memoir Man

... And by 'greatest male fragrances' I mean the greatest fragrances that smell really manly IMO

OK, I'm ready to play. It's absurd in some sense--sort of like choosing the five greatest anthropoids to walk the earth, but what the hell, it's good fun.

Of the generally acknowledged 'greats' these are five that I consider great and wear in their current incarnations.

    Derby (Guerlain)
    Granville (Dior)
Santal Noble (MPG) (nervous about this one, hope they don't go cheap on the woods)
Tiffany for Men (too good to be true, buy some now just in case)
New York (altho hear IFRA have officially screwed this one up now)

Discontinued but will wear them for as long I can:

    Patou pour Homme
    Yohji Homme
    Crabtree & Evelyn Original Sandalwood
    Maxims pour Homme

Great but hobbled beyond repair by IFRA

    Eau Sauvage
    Chanel pour Monsieur
Most chypres and various fougeres that we read about - the current versions inhabit a world of shadows and memory.

You are referring to team sports. Frags don't come in teams. And that is a sad thing. Because once You rode the bus to work or school You knew. All that frags and deodorants interfere to an olfactory mess, there is no team-play. Particularly do perfumes dedicated to a certain gender neglect those from the other side.

This said I would consider "male" frags as candidates which avoid conflicting sensations when the sexes come together. By cultural agreement women are encouraged to use more verbose scents than men. To the latter we may suggest:

Givenchy - Insense (not the ultramarine flanker)
    Sisley - Eau de Campagne
Etat Libre d'Orange - Je Sui Une Homme (is said to smell much like Guerlain - Derby)

    and of course
    Caron - 3rd Man / Pour Homme

I like the idea of fragrances that "talk" to each other e/g in the lift / bus / disco / bar. Comme De Garcons missed that when they brought out these series like "fruit", "synthetic" etc ... . To much perfume not related to anything else than itself.

Are some people trying to be funny about naming Old Spice? This is the ultimate 'old man' fragrance. Nothing classic about it, nothing good about it. It was my very first cologne ever, I was like 8 years old, it was given to me, and I still hated it.

Top 5 that I can speak for:

    Green Irish Tweed
    Imperial Millesime
    Cool Water
    Tommy by Tommy Hilfiger
    Acqua di Gio

It's probably hopeless to try, but here's my list, limited by the fact that there are thousands I have never smelled:

    Patou Pour Homme
    Chanel Pour Monsieur (1955)
    Caron Pour Un Homme
Guerlain Vetiver (perhaps in a pre-2000 vintage)
[don't know what to do for the 5th one: maybe something unisex like Acqua di Parma Colonia, or something newer and fabulous like Nicolai New York, or something unabashedly bold, like Creed Vintage Tabarome or
Gucci Pour Homme, or something obscure but fabulous like Stardust for Men. ]

There are so many good ones to choose from.

Albeit the fact that such threads are quite fun, you'll hardly get the same top five out of everyone/anyone as things are quite subjective

    Le 3me Homme (vintage)
Giorgio Beverly Hills V.I.P. Special Reserve
    Kouros
    Xeryus (vintage)

Bvlgari Pour Homme has a lot more wood and is very harsh/bitter compared to Silver Musk. I really can't describe Silver Musk with words. It's the most beautiful scent I've ever encountered. It's a very clean out of the shower scent, but it's a lot more than that. When I close my eyes and inhale (yes!) it's like travelling to another world. I get tons of things going on in my brain. A wave of nostalgy and hard to describe feelings just overload my brain. In the drydown I get a wonderful clean musk, mixed with some cotton candy, a flower field, soap, an air of vanilla, a very faint menthol vibe and something reminding me of faint burning pipe tobacco. I know, the official note is just musk. I think there's something in it that tricks the brain to make up smells that you like but isn't physically there. It's a masterpiece!

I had a relative who was a pipe smoker, and somehow it reminds me of him. To me Silver Musk is like he just got out of the shower, dressed in a freshly laundered suit. Just finished a smoke session on his pipe, and put a menthol pastille in his mouth.
I have Bulgari PH, and had a Silver Musk sample. The great similarity is inevitable, but I find Bulgari more interesting with it's ethereal nature. To my nose Silver Musk is simple, one dimensional.
