    Default Fragrances Go Stale?

    Hello Basenotes Community,

I hope all is well! Well, I'm hoping someone can shed some light on my confusion regarding the question I'm about to ask. I've heard of fragrances going rancid/spoiled/bad etc, but I've never heard of them going "stale"......? What does that mean? Do they smell good when they go stale or is it like soda where the fragrance goes flat or something? What does "stale" mean exactly or is it just another way of sayong the fragrance went rancid? Thanks and as always, God Bless!

stale basically means the notes decay. They don't spoil, go rancid, they just fade. Usually the top notes would decay first, then the heart, then after a loooong time of improper storage the base will fade

Ah I see, but do they only go stale with improper storage or is this just an inevitable fate that all fragrances must encounter in their shelf lives?
