Thumbs up Re: Vetyver, an all times classic... but what is the best Vetyver available and why?

ENCRE NOIRE and VETIVER EXTRAORDINAIRE are magnificent but i also like Lorenzo Villoresi, Etro, Mazzolari, Guerlain and Floris
Have I told you about the scent of jasmine? Have I spoken about the smell of the sea? The earth is scented. And I perfume myself to enhance what I am. The ELDO Fat Electrician doesn't reveal any earthyness on me for others and vice versa. It is a sweet vetiver/vanilla brew, very clean opposed to the assaulting Habannita. My conception of it is a counter balance of sweet/woody vanilla and herbal/nutty-rooty vetiver. Rooty in a sense of "black salsify" aka "scorzonera", carrot without the orange ...

I wouldn't take it as an eponymous vetiver.

For anyone who is man enough to own up to wearing floral fragrances, he has
to try Guerlain Vetiver Pour Elle.

I find it abundantly uplifting and satisfying. To my nose, it's a fantastic blend of florals & vetiver.
Sillage & longevity are top notch. It's got Guerlain's legacy behind it and the packaging is beautiful too.

    Overall, a winner.

It has been a long and twisted road through the land of vetiver. My favorites that I have stayed with through darkness and light are:

Sel d' Vetiver - sunshine, the sea, elevating
Encre Noire - ink darkness, ominous,
Villoresi Vetiver - earth and roots
Vetiver 46 - incense, cedar effervescent

With vetiver fragrances it is hard to name clearly what's best there are just so many that smell really good.

A quite provocative statement. The Givenchy may develop bold facets on skin. And thus it is formal, layed back, settled, not always in a good way. I personally like the refreshing to adstringend quality of Carven Vetiver (old formula) and as a more nutritious variant the ELDO Fat Electrician. The former combines lavender, the latter vanilla with the material in question.

Nobody mentioned Kenzo Air Intense. It's crap, "kitsch", though. First it may be taken as a typical-vetiver-true-to-the-real-stuff thing. Then it becomes boring and in the end develops a nauseous aspect of environmental pollution. Even vetiver can be rendered hideous.

The Tom Ford concoction Grey Vetiver is an other case. 2 be avoided in my book. It smells "as-if" it was vetiver. But it has some high gloss polished texture to it which renders it unbelievable. The juxtaposition is obviously an accident in trying to be at once modern and classic.

I'll happily try any that come along even tho I don't wear vetiver very often. I'd like to try the Givenchy at some point, it seems to be a classic but it's sure not easy to find. My favourites are Vetiver Pour Elle, Sel de Vetiver, respect for Sycomore and Extrordinaire and I'll do my monthly lone voice in the widerness plug for Vetiver Tonka, which just seems to suit me more than the rest. I like Original Vetiver but I don't really think of it as a vetiver scent, frankly.

Encre Noire, followed closely by vetiver extraordinaire. Considering the price gap, Encre Noire wins.

This summer I have thoroughly enjoyed a few wearings of Annick Goutal's Vetyver. Love it very much.

Well, I won't go as far as "best available" as I have not smelled nearly every vetiver scent on the market... To my nose, out of the ones I *have* smelled, Encre Noir reigns supreme. A relatively close second is the release this year from Mona di Orio... Les Nombres d'Or Vetyver.
    Current Top Favorites:
    1) Portrait of a Lady original formula (EdP Frédéric Malle)
    2) Giorgio for Men vintage/V.I.P. for Men (Giorgio Beverly Hills)
    3) Dia Man vintage edt (Amouage)
    4)
Anat Fritz Original Formula and Classical (Anat Fritz) - tie
    4) Lalfeorosa (O'driù) - tie

    6)
Les Nombres d'Or Vetyver (Mona di Orio)
    7) Captain vintage (Molyneux)
    8) Tzora (Anat Fritz)
    9) Javanese Patchouli (Zegna) - tie
    9) Monsieur de Givenchy vintage (Givenchy) - tie
    9) Coeur de Vetiver Sacré (L'Artisan) - tie
    9) X for Men (Clive Christian) - tie
    9) Patou pour Homme Privé (Jean Patou) - tie
    9) Oud Shamash (The Different Company) - tie
