    Default Suggestions: Melancholy fragrance

Now that it's fall, I'm leaning more towards my melancholy fragrances (Apres l'ondee, l'heure bleue, N'aimez que moi)

Does anyone have any reqs for similar scents that envoke this feeling? i'm sure this question has been asked before, but here it is again.

Mitsouko can have that vibe for me. Also Feminite du Bois, for some reason. And definitely Sienne l'Hiver, a quintessential autumn fragrance with its smoke, stone, and chestnuts.

For me it's Hermès Un Jardin après la Mousson - although that one doesn't really work for fall (perhaps hurricane season, though!).

For fall, my melancholy scent is probably Hinoki. Not sure why, but it hits me as really appropriate late in the fall when the leaves are all down and the sky is staying gray, and it's just cold and wet. +

I always read these threads with interest, as I've never associated a scent with melancholy. I must be missing a gene or something! Love several of the scents mentioned. Sienne l'Hiver is a work of art, for example.

L'Heure Bleue certainly is #1 in this category, but many iris scents have that feel, too.

My faves include AG Heure Exquise, Hermès Hiris, TDC Bois d'Iris and SL Iris Silver Mist.

Me ,too!Naimez que moi and Apres l'ondee ,i believe are so thin, airy floral scents!I like them! They don't remind me of anything melancholic!!!
May be it's the mood of seeing things or the phase we are going through that relates our fragrance wearing to something
It's a very personal case what sensation or feeling a fragrance wearing gives us!!!Sometimes we are connecting a special event of our lives to a perfume!!!That is so understanding

The saddest fragrance I know is Frederic Malle's En Passant, but for me, it's a spring fragrance rather than a fall one.

To some extent C&S No. 88.
I usually wear it as a calming scent but at times, I've experienced that it makes me sad.
No olfactory memories attached to it.

Tom Ford's Velvet Gardenia has that effect on me, definitely a scent for a damp autumn day l think.

I did get a sort of interesting melancholic reaction to this one as well. And I agree - spring. Which shouldn't seem sad, but yet it did to me, too.

This is an interesting concept. I do think of some scents as moody and sad, like a Ravel piano piece.
One that always feels like this to me is Niki de Saint Phalle.
Rive Gauche feels like autumnal fog, and solitude.

My choices for self imposed melancholy are Apres l'Ondee- it has that feeling when you know your heart is going to break, and Chanel Bois des Iles- the alleged history of its creation/inspiration is a story of tragic love, it just feels distant & sad somehow.

And...now I want Vol de Nuit....

If you haven't already, I'd strongly recommend you check out Le Dix from Balenciaga VINTAGE. I can only speak for the extrait, but I await a vintage EdT bottle soon It's the first and so far only time I can really appreciate violets (in a dark and dusty kind here).

    I agree with this.

Only i would also suggest that you try most of the many violet scents available and then choose what you liked best. Violet is one of the notes that evoke that feeling of melancholy to many people.

The feeling could also be created by smelling a scent from your personal past, something that your mother wore for example, that would make a close connection to the past.

Balenciaga's Le Dix (in any concentration) is of course a great scent, and a good alternative to search for that feeling, i also think Guerlain's Parure evokes that as well.

    cheers

I find Serge Lutens Gris Clair to be a bit melancholic, and I think it is a scent that works in well in both fall/spring. I may be alone on this one, but to me this excellent lavender is a bit cold and smoky.

Both have a bittersweet melancholy to me. If you can find an old bottle of Coty Chypre, there is a very primal melancholy to it that is quite exquisite.

Douce Amere, melancholic? I find it to be more playful even if a bit surprising-not sheer "joyful" but not melancholic....

You're not, I was going to write Gris Clair, too! I find it very meditative. That reminds me, Dzongkha is a bit melancholy, too.
