Those are beautiful clothes, but I don't think I would have wanted to dress like that each day - too much painful corsetry for one thing, the metaphor of women's subordination (sorry! ). I love the free and easy and more comfortable styles of the 1920s and 1930s.

    Coco Chanel…

    (yay for trousers for women!)

    Marlena…

Nancy Cunard…(actually, I think she looks a little unwell, but I love her clothes).

1930s through to early 1950's - sharp, tailored, dressy and elegant with a strong whimsical, almost absurdistic streak. Strong shoulders, marked waistlines, sleek skirts, great details, strong, dark and muted colours. This is what influences my own personal style the most.

Late 1780's to mid 1790's - that odd, short transitional phase between late rococo fashions and early Napoleonic, when the corset is retained but severely shortened, the skirts are still big but has a bustle placed high in the back, the hair is still huge but deflated and has more volume than sheer height, and the hats are just crazy. Men's fashions were insane, too, bold cropped vests, tight, pale trousers or breeches, huge collars and lapels, huge cravats, bizarre hair, more bizarre hats. Fashion was a mess during the French revolution. I love it.

I'm also getting more and more curious about WWI-era fashions - that's another bizarre transitional phase.

There is beauty to be found in every decade and century, but closest to me personally is the 80's. And I don't mean spandex and neon and poodle hair... I was a teen during the 80's when the Japanese started showing in Paris and shocked/revolutionized the western fashion world. I still love and wear Comme des Garçons and Yohji Yamamoto, but truth be told I often just grab a pair of jeans and a sweater...

Love that film. in my top ten for sure. So far my favorite fashion era is now. Cause I can basically wear whatever I like almost anywhere. It wasn't too long ago that you couldn't go to nicer restaurants without a jacket.

Sharp suits, fedora & a swagger from the swinging '30s. My mom wasn't even born yet then.

The 1930's: William Powell; Cary Grant; Adolph Menjou; hats, gloves and style. The average Joe had no dough; but the style was great for those who did. Also, now: men who care to look good; hats are back and while the style is not all around us, and is not respected the way it was, it's more democratic today. We can look back and emulate the styles we liked.

    Hated the 70's.
