Stating the obvious here with this link: the perfume line with a lot of nice scents but with the false impression of having a "history" as old as Guerlain, stating 1830. (Actually, the company was founded in 1908 by some investors. See "The Perfume Handbook," 2nd edition, and also "Perfume Presentations.")

Nice ad, nice scents (including the modern ones) but the "history" is all marketing. As much as the man wore perfume in abundance, he never made it for himself or anyone else, including a so-called "English" mistress. In reality, the woman in question was Irish...and his wife's stepmother...

I really like these ads nevertheless!

Yesterday, I first wore John Varvatos Artisan. Then, after I showered after some lawn work; I put on Dzongkha by L'artisan Parfumeur. The contrast was very interesting.

Artisan, all of the Varvatos fragrances, feels to me like being in a loft in Portland's Pearl District. It's 400 square feet and cost $499,995. Of course, everywhere you look in this small space everything is excellent, hardwood floors, marble countertops, the best fixtures. The owner has packed the space with designer furnishings and interesting art. And the east wall is glass floor-to-ceiling, side-to-side, looking out on the city and the river with the twin spires of the convention center in the ddistance and the entire east-side spread out before you and, on a clear day, Mt. Hood can be seen. And, of course, you are in the Pearl District, just a few blocks, but what blocks they are... packed full of great places to eat, the best wine bars, galeries, stores, clubs... it's all packed in.

Dzongkha feels like being in a huge space.... maybe a grand ballroom of a huge palace. Everythig is the best and most interesting, but it is spread out and expansive.

The Varvatos fragrances feel compact and confined... a lot of stuff in a small space. Dzongkha gives the feeling of being in a huge space with everything spread out and open.
